  1. I work at a Rajabhat, but the same goes for other universities/schools I have seen: Every couple weeks we get an announcement from higher up about whether on-site classes will resume in the next two weeks or not. So now we will wait around another week to get the announcement for November 1. Our particular university will be on break then, so even if on-site classes were allowed by the government, we probably wouldn't teach in person until the start of the second term of 2021 (yet unannounced). Another big factor is vaccination, since right now, the great majority of students have yet to get their first jab.

  2. Hello all! I'm studying at Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University and writing my master's thesis on Thai nicknames. So far, I've collected around 800 responses from local parents and teachers about their kids' nicknames (including some unique ones like "Refill," "Gmail," and, "Helicopter"). My next step is to survey native English speakers' thoughts on some of those names. To that end, I'd like to ask you to fill out my survey if you can spare the time... It should take about 5 or 10 minutes. Thank you in advance!

Again, thanks for your time, and please feel free to forward the survey to your friends!!

  3. I left my car there two times last year - once for a single night and once for three nights. Before doing so, I asked a former student who works there at the Air Asia counter if it was OK, and she said that people do it all the time (note: This makes it neither legal nor officially approved, just good enough for me). When I went, there was a guard in the parking lot. I asked him if I could leave my car there for a few days, and he said to make sure I parked under one of the lights.

If there isn't a guard in the lot anymore, I might be a little more wary of leaving a car there, but I personally don't think it's a high risk place for theft ... It's more of a place I'd worry about getting scraped by another car, attacked by wandering night cows, or abducted by aliens - it's got that special "where the hell are we" vibe, especially the first time you drive down that loooong tree-lined road from the highway.

  4. The first generation of these devices employed a manual switch, but later ones automatically sense the level of ethanol in your gas tank and automatically adjust.

I have a few friends with the sugar flex or similar devices (Chevy Aveo, Toyota Vios, and Mazda 3) who both use it with no complaints except that E10 prices have dropped so low recently, the benefits of using e85 are not as great anymore.

  5. Anyone know what the latest paperwork requirement for 90 day report is?

Just visited KK yesterday for my yearly extension..

90 days is the same as before: Application form, previous 90-day receipt notice, copies of relevant pages in passport (photo page, entry stamp page, current visa page).

However, everyone applying for extensions had to fill out two new (to me) forms that basically said you have been officially notified of the penalties for overstay (with a list of overstay duration and corresponding years you will be barred from entering the kingdom) and also that you must report every 90 days (maybe with the penalties as well, I just scanned this sheet quickly).

Hint: If you are socially capable (smile and be nice to those with whom you interact), you can ask for your 90 days and re-entry after they are almost done with your extension and get all three done at once (without having to line up for the latter two). Just make sure all your application forms, passport copies (sans the latest stamps of course), and photos (for re-entry) are ready beforehand, and place them in front of you when your extension is being approved by a superior in the back. Then when your passport comes back, either go copy the latest pages with stamps or tip one of the blur-shirted interns to go do it for you (the interns serve as runners for the officers when it gets busy).

  6. My wife and I have used credit cards from several banks in Thailand and SCB is the only one with which we've experienced no problems. We use cards offline mostly in Thailand, but also on trips to the US and Japan. Online, we've never had a problem buying from anywhere. Cards we had problems purchasing online with include:

    - HSBC

    - Citibank

    - Bangkok Bank

Judging from others' experiences, maybe we've just been lucky with SCB.

The c/card problems you had from the three banks (above) might have been for some particular reason that the banks regarded as negative.

Re. Bangkok Bank ... I have three c/cards with them for 13 years (two for myself, one for my wife) I use the c/cards 50% online both in Thailand and in many foreign countries with no problems, and after all those years I never had a c/card problem from Bangkok Bank.

Bangkok Bank Visa worked fine for Amazon, Google Play, and Rakuten purchases, but choked a couple months ago when we tried to order a pizza online from the Pizza Company. Solved this by paying cash in the end, but it was a big hassle (being on the phone with their support guy who tried to get it to work with multiple methods several times) for a fairly forgettable meal. Used the same card the next day to make sure it was still valid, but didn't bother calling the company to see what the problem was.

HSBC couldn't send us OTP passwords on time to validate online purchases.

We couldn't figure out some of the service fees that Citibank was charging and they wanted a big annual fee after the first year, so we dropped them. It was nice using their card for discounts at some restaurants, though, as someone else stated above.

Now that I think about it, the other card that my wife has used for many years without problem is her TMB Visa - there's no reason for most people to use that bank over any other, though.

  8. Damn. The headline gave me visions of Japanese imports - just what Thailand needs to shake up the used car market.

Jap imports sorted the used car market in NZ for the customers betterment.

Can we do without racial pejoratives such as "Jap." It violates TV rules and offend one sense of decency.

I second this request; the usage isn't offensive, but the word itself is.

  9. Never going to Happen. The Ford Praisers Hit the top af Nit Wits List. Why didnt You Buy a Flying Turd, as recomended by wierd Americans, Spooney..? That funny new things a dissster sooner have a Proton at 600K. Just my view

I stopped posting in the ecosport thread because I realized my opinions were hurting people who actually bought them... Last notification I got, somebody compared it to a Lexus RX, no kidding.

    --

BTW, Spoonman, that is a sweeeeet ride, man. I'm jealous. If it came in stick (and if I had the money), I'd buy the same model as yours TOMORROW. Out of curiosity, what model dubs were you going to put on it?

  10. Big dilemma. My Mazda CX-5 is ready for delivery today. But I'm thinking about to postpone it to the end of this year or even choose another more premium car as I will not have time to use it now. Should I go and get it an keep it in the garage for 6-7month or buy it/other car later when time for it?

It sounds like you want to wait and see what other choices you have at the end of the year. That's what I would do!

  11. Regarding the engine choices in the future, the dealer told us the Ecoboost will only be available in manual tranny when it arrives, and evidently the diesel version (so far only a manual tranny too in Brazil and India) is never going to make it to Thailand. Not sure why for either of these two points. However, vehicle is solid and seems heavy and perhaps it is a weight issue for the smaller 1 liter engine?

I don't want to get you down about your new mia noi magnet (that was never my intention), but you do realize that the "smaller 1 liter engine" is significantly more powerful than the one in yours, right? If you can question the power to weight issue of a more powerful configuration...

I'm happy you're happy with your new car.

  12. So what about the Juke and Livina? How did they compare with the Ecosport?

The ecosport feels like it's straining just driving around normally (of course, normal is subjective).

The Livina and Juke feel a lot less so.

Part of the problem with the ecosport is the gearing/transmission. It feels like it needs more power all the time.

The Nissans in question are also slow, they just feel less so.

The biggest problem I saw with the Nissans was rough assembly and paint finish (the blue Jukes in particular had very poor paint). The Nissan dealer I know said that was to be expected with the models made in Indonesia.

The biggest problem with the ecosport is that it's glaringly underpowered.

  13. I have been able to get a refund/exchange for broken items or things I just didn't want at multiple branches. If the original transaction was on your Big C card, they don't even need the receipt.

In one case, I bought a DVD player and didn't try it out for a few weeks. When I did try it out, I found it wouldn't play from a USB stick smoothly, so I tried to return it (at the service counter). Since the stated return period had lapsed, a manager had to give approval, but they eventually let me have a different model and refunded me the difference.

  14. I love those 2 stroke bikes... so much POWER! specially at the 3rd gear.

I used to ride my friends 2 Stroke Honda Sonic 110cc, maximum speed 140KM/s, out of red lights on 1st gear I smoked the shit out of the scooters.

I smoke even the 150cc CBRs

Aren't Sonics 4-stroke? Or did he do a crazy swap?

  15. Just want to offer my two cents here: I recently decided to ditch my smartphone and replace it with a tablet, a cheap phone, and a camera if I want to take decent photos. I already have a camera and plan to buy a Samsung clamshell or equivalent for under 1000 Baht. That leaves the tablet.

I tried out various 3000 to 6000 baht models in stores and checked out ones my students and friends have. My take on them is that the cheapest ones are too low-spec and frustrating to use, with sluggish performance, horrible touch screens, and inadequate battery life. They might be useful in a pinch just to look up something on the Internet, but not much else. The more expensive models were better, but usually lacking in some area (no GPS, poor video performance, poor Android update support, etc.)

I figured I would be using the tablet for at least a couple years, so decided I should invest a bit more money in it. After thinking about size factor, I decided I wanted about a 7" screen. I was aware of the iPad mini, but wanted something with better cost performance, standard connectors (standard for a person with a small collection of Android chargers and peripherals), and a replaceable battery for long road trips.

Long story short, I found an ad for my local Tesco (Maha Sarakham) a couple days ago for a Google (ASUS) Nexus 7 3G 32GB for 10,900 Baht. This model can use wifi and has a microsim slot for 3G data connection as well. I looked it up online and they were being sold cheaper, but decided to go take a look at the one in-store anyway. As it turns out, they had only one left in stock and were willing to knock off another 1,500 Baht. I took that as a sign that it was meant to be and bought it on the spot. This morning I took it to a True shop just upstairs from the Tesco, and they had an unlimited internet (2Gb 3G usage/month) + 400 min. voice package + unlimited True wifi AP usage promotion for 499/month for first year (iSmart 699 plan). Took that deal as well (They for some reason also gave me a truelife+ DSR box, a Jiuzhou DTS5418. I have an unused True dish, so I guess I can use it).

I also just ordered a case and OTG USB cable to be able to connect external storage (via Nexus Media Importer), a mouse, and keyboard.

If there is one regret I have with this tablet, it is that it's not a phone, so my 400 free voice minutes will go to waste.

TL;DR: For just over 10,000 baht (plus 500 baht/month) you can buy a 7" tablet with kickass specs that can connect to high speed (for TH) internet anywhere. If I had the choice of buying two (or even three) less expensive tablets or this one for the same price, I would choose this one every time*.

*The one scenario where I think a cheap tablet might be useful to me is as a starter device for my kids, but I'm really limiting the time they spend on computers every day, so have decided they can use mine here and there instead of buying them their own.

  16. I'm in Lampang. By the way, for car without Blue Book is best to avoid? What the worst can happen if you brought/own a car without the blue book? The original registered owner can come and take it away from you anytime?

Oh, we're way down here in Isan, so it would probably make more sense to look for something closer to you... Sounds like classic car restoration is easier and cheaper up in Chiang Mai, anyway.

I would imagine the worst thing is if you were found to be at fault for a serious accident in that car. Since it isn't properly registered, you wouldn't be covered by 3rd party or mandatory insurance.

  17. I'm a little tired of the taunting about the low-end. Surely it isn't news to anyone that we teachers must live on a low budget.

Haters gonna hate... They're just jealous they can't be in the Crappy 2T Club. I ride my 3,000 baht Tena with pride, and leave them all behind in a cloud of thick, white freedom.

    LOL.

Seriously, though, you don't have to make excuses for having old/cheap/crappy bikes. Especially since you've bought about ten of them for less than the price of a new Fino.
