  1. Very sad, the most important one here is the baby . Very difficult situation, but don't make any hasty decisions. Sorry to say that this 'reeks' of a Thai boyfriend Mac! Whatever, it is your daughters future welfare that is the main issue. I wish you well & hope you can sort everything out & remember, every cloud supposedly has a silver lining.

    Agreed :o

  2. I recently heard bits of a Thai conversation suggesting that there was (or soon will be) a bowling alley in Maha Sarakham. Can anyone confirm this? Do you know the location?

    Thanks,

    Dan

Dan, confirmed, I have not been but the boys and girls from the 101 Pizza and Internet Cafe next door at the lake (Bung Palang Chai?) in the centre of Roi Et have been doing runs for a few games. If you are not to far out of town pop in either for directions if you get no confirmed directions here.

  3. Where is Satuek?

If not too far, I would come to cheer; but am no longer fit to paddle.

Twenty years ago, I paddled in one of those long ones in Brunei.

The Shell Oil Company lads were making up a team, and felt that the fact that I put their product in the tank of my carwas a sufficient qualification for me to be enrolled.

Wielding that paddle was strenuous work. My arm muscles were really suffering next day.

Good luck to the younger generation.

Satuek is quite a bit away from where you are in Udon Thani. I would reckon about 240 km. to the south from Udon City. Along the 219 between Roi Et and Burriram. So quite a bit for a days outing, but if you want to spend a couple of days, we have comfortable accommodation available to stay overnight.

You may have guessed, that the race we are planning is part of the program, but just for fun and therefore as strenuous as we like it to be. (which will not be pushed to the limit, I can assure you)

This area in Isaan is scattered with all kind of different festivals every season the whole year through, and we (some local expats and some guys who live in Pattaya and visit here regularly) just like to enjoy it with the Thai, not only as spectators. Taking part in it is highly appreciated by the Thai and we are usually well rewarded.

If you can not come, you will see it nationwide on all TV channels.

    Cheers

    Arthur

  4. Hey Macb,

I hope that it is less expensive than my wife's hospital bill. Three full days and the OR changes came to a whopping grand total of...... $14,500 USD. I am so glad that we have full medical insurance so we only had to pay $20 USD out of pocket.

I wish you guys luck and make sure to get some picks up so we can all see your work first hand :o

  7. And the Mermaid round the lake.

Get yourselves out to Bang Chang for a day/night out, the strip there was good fun last visit a year ago, and I hear a few new attractions in the offing, planning a road trip there myself. (I have been living in Issan now for the last 4 years, and enjoying it, 10 years of Pattaya was enough for me! )

  9. According to the Laos website you can't get a visa on arrival into laos. However, it looks like some people on here have been able too.

I think I'll get my Laos & Cambodia visa in BKK before going to Laos as you can't get a visa on arrival via Laos on land crossings apparently.

If anyone else has any more knowledge that would be helpful.

    Thanks

At both Chong Mek and Mukdahan you can purchase your Lao visa once you stamp out of Thailand and go t the Lao side of the border. I have several friends who are required to do this every 3 months for their multi entry Non Imm visas. You cannot go across to Chong Mek on a day pass to visit the markets there. This was possible up until a few months ago.

I did the market run to Chong Mek five months ago, TW got me through and back no controls just signed on a photocopy of her ID, only problem was back on the Thai side mini bus full escorted to the local bottles and stoppers shop, consficated two cartons of smokes and a few bottles of cheap liquour, appears they had a genuine concern over ethonal? based liquour taking its toll.

If you are in the region it is worth going for the boat ride @ 10K North? on the Mekong where the Mun/Moon? river enters the Mekong and the river runs two colours and swirling backwaters are a sight to see, stop at the Sirinthorn dam floating restauraunt for eats and swim, good family day out.

Sorry to hear they have tightened up the border, I would have visited again.

  10. Hi All, first post, only recently informed of this forum. I Have been living in Roi Et for almost the last four years. Funky town and growing fast. My wife works at the travel-car rental place any info required call 043 513230 or 01 8727649 English and Thai spoken.

    For now,

    TapDam

Hello TapDam and thanks for your reply.

Is there a chance that you can tell me what the car rental prices are? Ball park would be O.K..

Also, out of interest, what do you think is the make up of the farang population in Roi Et.

By this I mean where do the majority of farang come from?

When I was there I didnt hear a lot of English being spoken by the few farang that I came close to.

Er indoors tells me, 1200THB for a pickup, 1500THB for a car/day, 21000THB/month? (new vehicles less than 1 year old with A1 insurance).

Farangs are all over Roi Et, a lot of teachers with the government policy to teach the locals English, Swiss German and English are at about parity, also Aus American and Canadians, growing fast, first time here eight years (lived here now for almost four years) ago I thought I was the only Farang in town?

Go to 101 pizza place at the lake or the White Elephant bar near the Roi Et City Hotel and all will become apparent.

    See you soon

    Tap Dam.

I am from way down under but just loved Roi Et and will be there maybe Feb or March and want to have a better look around.

    Thanks.
