As you didn't even mention where you're located, let her watch Youtube movies for learners of the English language.

Go to Bangkok Post's website and look for English for young learners, there are great stories with the vocab in Thai, plus an audio file to listen to the text.

    https://www.bangkokpost.com/learning/

It's very difficult when she doesn't have any knowledge of English to start at a boarding school. She needs to catch up and that's only possible in her free time.

      Another great website is: https://www.examenglish.com/CEFR/cefr.php

You'll find exercises in listening, speaking, writing and reading from A 1 ( beginner) to C 2 ( mastery level).

Watching cartoons/movies without Thai subtitles helps a lot.

Thanks but I'm not looking for English learning resources. I'm looking for boarding options as the topic title suggests.

OP you might get more answers if you post where you're located!!!

How is my location relevant to where I board my niece?

WWA is clearly the better school. If she's not much of a student and you don't plan on making much of a "donation" then maybe not. Many of the girls go on to top ten universities.

SHC I'm not entirely certain they board outside EP but it's very possible. It's an OK school. The best of the EP girls will land a few spots at Chula. The Thai side is pretty weak but I'm sure it's way better than 95% of what's upcountry. They get a few hrs English weekly outside of EP.

If you can get into SHC a bonus is all or most girls in dorms are in EP program. So some of it might run off. Girls in EP are from better families. Education isn't bad in EP it's just not great. SHC is not expensive especially Thai side. No idea about the boarding.

EP girls do OK at SHC. Chula, Thammasat, Kasetsart for the more ambitious. Rich, lazy girls go to ABAC.

Prolly both compete for seats at KMUTT it's been really moving up in ranking.

    Start thinking about university now.

You can pm me for more.

Very informative. Thank you. Will check out the recommendations.

  3. Trying to plan the schooling future of a 13 year old Thai girl. She is my wife's niece and we have family permission. The niece grew up in a small village, went to village school, was one of the brighter ones. She's in her M1 year of high school and we (my wife and I) would like to give her a better education moving forward. Due to work/travel we cannot be in Thailand for the entire school year.

So, assuming budget is not an issue. What should we do with her? She doesn't speak/listen/read/write English. Yes, she did learn English all those years but doesn't know the letter sounds or the difference between hair and head. That being said, she's good at math and does well in Thai subjects.

I guess an international school is out of the question since she is already 13 and has no English ability? Or, would she be able to go to an international school? Do they have Thai programs? Would they let her in to an English program? We would like her to get as much English as possible!!

Would it be a good idea to send her to a "good Thai boarding school" if she can't get into an International School? If there is one, can anyone point us to which ones are recommended?

Looking forward to input from those with experience or knowledge!

  4. Hi, 3 quick questions.

Is there a template for the last day of work letter somewhere so that I can get the school to sign it?

Will I have problems at the airport immigration if I try to leave without a re-entry permit? Will they ask for proof of cancelled work permit?

if I can't get the letter and try to leave for a tourist visa, will that cancel my visa / work permit and not cause any problems for my future Non B and work permit?

  5. The most important thing you will need from the school is a letter stating your last day of work. You can cancel the work permit yourself.

Is you job going to in the same province where you teaching now? If not it will complicate changing to a new employer.

The fact that you have been extending a non-o visa entry changes nothing. What was the non-o based upon? If married to a Thai that could make things a little easier.

Your new employer would have to apply for work permit for you and obtain a work permit application letter.

Then you could go to immigration with the letter from the school on before your last date of work to have your current extension cancelled. As soon as that is done you would apply for new extension with supporting documents from your new employer and the work permit approval letter.

After the extension is done you would cancel your work permit and the new one could be issued.

What is needed to get the non-b visa will depend upon where you apply for it. As an example Vientiane requirements can be found here. http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/Visa/Non-B%20business.pdf

What if they .won't provide the letter?

The job will be in a different province

It was based on marriage. I got divorced years ago and the school was still able to extend. I had to provide the divorce certificate each year.

Interesting. I wonder if the stars would align to make this happen!?

    Thank you for the link

  6. Hello all,

I'm currently working for a school and would like to give 1 month's notice so that I can start working for a Thai company.

I have a feeling the school is not going to make things easy so I want to be able to do this myself if possible. I've read on another topic that I can cancel my own work permit without any documents from the school, is that correct?

My visa is a Non-O and the school has been extending it for the last 3 years or so. So I assume, the extension will finish if I stop working? Or is a Non-O a special case?

If I have to leave as soon as I turn in my work permit, where would be the best/easiest/cheapest place to get a tourist visa?

I understand from a previous topic that I can transfer the tourist via to a Non-B although it's a little more complicated than getting a non B outside the country?

Also, where can I find a list of documents that I would need to get a Non B outside Thailand? I am the first foreign employee at the Thai company so I'm sure they will need some help learning about the process involved.

    Thank you

  7. The water filter is simply put before the inlfux to the cistern.

Such a cistern is about 1600 liters.

For us it would take at least 3 days for turnover.

You should consider to control the filling more or less manually and not filling up to the edge.

Most simple filter at the influx.

10 inch housing (2,5 inch diameter), different types/sizes of housing and cartridges are available.

    (10 inch, 20 inch, 30 inch, 40 inch, diameters: 2.5, 4.5)

For your application a small 10/2.5 housing is sufficient.

As a starter to the science of sediment filters tongue.png see this page of a specialized online shop where I buy my stuff.

Much much cheaper than the extortion at local homestores:

Star Water Filter Co. - Sediment Cartrides

    Housings:

In the picture you see a 5 micron cartridge after about 3 days of use whistling.gif

    New cartridges are white whistling.gif

I just changed to washable cartridges (more expensive, not yet sure whether it pays).

Depending on how bad the water is, it might be useful to put two filters in a row.

One with a 20 micron cartridge followed by one with 5 micron.

The black thingy is a handle to open/close the housing.

    attachicon.gifsedimentfilter.jpg

So we've been using the the housing with a 5 micron filter for a while now. We're changing it every few weeks which seems like it's not frequent enough so I would like to order from the website above in bulk. Which filter do you recommend? How are the washable filters going?

  8. The plastic piece was left over after the guys installed the tank and filter housing so I guess it is possible that it belongs to the tank.

Unfortunately I tossed the old filter. I had a closer look and it appears the water is supposed to go from the outside of the filter to the inside, and then out to the tank. Is that correct?

  9. So we bought a housing (with filter) similar to the one mentioned KHUNBENQ and it worked a treat. I decided to replace it after a couple of weeks and now there is sediment in the bathroom and it is getting worse not better. I've either installed the new filter wrong or I bought the wrong one comepletely because when I opened it, the outside of the filter was covered in grimy dark sludge. In addition, there is a plastic piece that came with the housing that looks like a small cylinder with holes in it which I have no idea where it should be place?

    So my questions are

    1. Where does the plastic cylinder with holds go ?

    2. What micron number is best ? a low number or high?

    Thanks

  10. We use the water for washing, flushing, and showering.

I'm interested in learning about the filters. Where is the filter placed? In the cistern?

I've attached a photo. I am not sure what it's made of or size. I'm also not sure how long it takes for us to go through the water as it automatically starts filling when the water level drops.

  11. Hi everyone,

Hope this is the right forum for this topic.

We live in a small house and get our water from the government. When we first moved in, the pressure was very low so we installed a cistern and a pump. The water goes first to the cistern, accumulates, and is then pumped into the house on demand.

I'd like to improve the quality of the water coming in. Sometimes there is a smell, either due to our water heater for the shower or the water itself. I also have a general feeling on my skin that the water is not as clean as it should be.

I'm wondering is there is an additive we can add to the cistern or some sort of filter we can install in the bathroom. I'm also interested to hear of any other suggestions plus cost involved.

    Thanks smile.png
