  1. I just went to pick up my Honda City CNG and have encountered the same issue with the manual. Although I ordered it 3 weeks ago they still have no idea if it actually exists. Has anyone received an English manual?

Antoher point I wanted to bring up on the City CNG - I ordered the V model, most expensive and found out it is lacking 2 things - no rear wheel disk brakes although the non-CNG model has rear wheel disks (they claim it is to cut down on weight due to large tank in the back), and there is no night mirror. Of course the sales girl had no idea what a night mirror was and when I showed her it on all of the other Hondas she again had no idea what the function was - sort of like going to Home Pro and asking a question... mae rou or mae me... anyway bottom line is I just paid over 700,000 baht for a car that has no nigh mirror and at that time Honda has no idea if they can even change mine over to a night mirror for a fee!

    Amazing Thailand.

  2. Please help!

I have been working for the same company for over 2 years now. My Non-Immigrant Visa was extended a few weeks ago for 1 year. In 10 days I will change jobs to a new province with a different company.

The company I am currently working for has informed me that they will cancel my Visa and Work Permit on the day I resign. The have also informed me that I will have to leave the country at that time (on that day) or I will have an overstay penalty. They stated that Phuket immigration informed them that they no longer give 7 day extensions. This seems ridiculous as I have another job to go to.

The lawyer for the new company has just begun the process for the new Work Permit. This will take about 2 weeks according to the ministry office. My last day off work is May 31.

Is there any other way I can do this without leaving the country to apply for a new Non-Imm B Visa? With the 7 day extension I would have time to go to the new province to apply for the visa.

Has anyone been told that they cannot get a 7 day extension?

    Thank you

  3. My friend is a Japanese National who is trying to live in Thailand with his Japanese wife and son. His son currently is enrolled in an international school in Thailand.

Last week he went to Singapore and his wife was granted a guardian visa but he was turned down. The embassy told them they would only give it for the mother. He told me that he had heard that he could apply for a guardian visa in K.L. as the father.

Has anyone recently done this in K.L.?

    Thanks

  4. So has everyone forgotten the amazing move the government did recently to change the entry stamp from 30 days to 15 days - the free tourists visa is a nice gesture but by no way does it help tourists that are traveling in Asia, entering by a land border. My own parents, who live 8 hours from a Thai consulate in their home country and thus cannot easily apply for a Tourist Visa, now have to go to the Myanmar border every 14 days. I still cant believe the government thought this was a good move in a tourist crisis. Anyone still upset by this move please continue to make your views known via the press or writing directly to the Thai government.

  5. I just moved to Phuket from Chiang Rai where I had a satellite system purchased from a local shop that got the Dream system from the Philippines.

So far in Phuket I can not find a supplier here that knows anything about the Dream system, they all want to see me a giant dish to get some Indian and thai channels.

Does anyone have the Dream system in Phuket. Perhaps the footprint is not over Phuket for this bird? If you have it please advise where I can purchase the gear.

    Thanks

  6. Singapore Airlines has a great deal on R/T ticket to Tokyo (17,685 Baht total - regular fee is 26,000 Baht) now but it is for 2 people traveling together. I am traveling alone so was wondering if anyone else out there was planing a trip to Tokyo in August. My dates are very flexable but would perfer to travel in the last 2 weeks of August for 10 to 14 days in total.

  7. A close friend was working at Overbrook Hospital at the time of the tragic event. The doctor was found on the main floor above the car park and rushed to Emergency where within 5 minutes they had her in surgery but unfortunately the wound was too extensive. The knife had cut her aorta, her heart and lungs. She was given massive amounts of blood but did not survive.

It is very sad for all of the staff. The doctor was liked by the staff. She was a dedicated radiologist at Overbrook. Her husband is a plastic surgeon in C. Rai. She leaves two sons.

The attack occurred in the underground parking lot on level one. The lot is closed on Sundays but the doctor had parked in the lot anyway. There were only 3 cars in the lot. The Doctors key hole on the drives side had numerous pieces of tape over it. She was attacked near the car. It appeared that she had tried to defend herself as she had other wounds on her body. The knife as found near the car. After the attack she somehow was able to walk and crawl up to the first floor where she was found.

The perpetrator escaped from the same stairwell and walked out to the street. He was seen by a witness who also saw him throw a glove away. Another glove was found by the car. The doctor was found wearing an expensive watch. Her purse was untouched and with her when she was found. This of course leads to the theory that this was not a robbery.

The police took photographs of the scene and fingerprinted various things. They did get a sketch artist to work with the witness to come up with a composite of the perpetrator. They allowed reporters on the scene within an hour after the event. They were walking around and photographing the car and the scene.

The service will be held at Wat 7 Yaut – the temple just north of Chaing Rai Inn.

  8. I came upon this interesting site of a Canadian University student that uses only a fan with a copper coil zap tied to it with cool water running through the coil. His original water source was from ice water but he later upgraded to using the city water supply which is 15 degrees C. He can vary the flow rate depending on how low he wants to bring the room temperature.

    http://www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/~gmilburn/ac/geoff_ac.html

The heat exchanger I originally mentioned is much more sophisticated than this and therefore I would assume more efficient. As to the Legionnaires Disease I will have to look closely as to how the water produced from condensation is dealt with in the unit.

Thanks for all the suggestions and input. When the system is finally installed I will post an update (assuming I have not succumbed to Legionnaires…)

  9. The problem is that the deeper you go the hotter the water gets, not cooler.

i am pumping from a depth of 31m, water temperature a constant 18ºC, i.e. near perfect for fan coil units.

Thanks to all for your input, and Dr. Naan the 18 degrees C info – this is exactly what I was trying to find out. I don’t know how much ground water temp. vary in Thailand, I am in C. Rai. I had no idea so many hotels in Thailand were using this system for AC. The cheap places I stay at always have a loud compressor just outside the window.

I had considered pumping into an insulated tank then pumping from there to the heat exchanger with a 12 volt pump that is connected to a regulated solar panel / battery system. The question would then be what flow rate would be required to get maximum efficiency with say 18 C running through the unit?

I was wondering if the bacteria Karl was referring to is from the condensation that could collect in the unit? As well from my research the water temperatures in a water table can vary from the top to the bottom of the table – the lower you go the cooler it becomes within the table.

  10. A friend of mine just brought an interesting sort of heat exchanger back with him from a resent trip to China. It looks just like the fan units of a regular wall or ceiling mounted air conditioning unit we see in Asia but it does not use Freon – it uses cold water.

You apparently need a source of cool water that is pumped through the unit. The cool water will absorb heat from the air then return the warmer water either back to its source or wherever you want it to go.

The unit came with no information so we are kind of in the dark on some issues. Our thoughts are to use ground water – so we plan to dig a well for this purpose. Has anyone had any experience with this type of system? We are not sure how cool the water should be to get efficiency with it. Obviously the cooler the better but how cool? The deeper the well theoretically the cooler the water but also the higher the water has to be pumped thus increasing energy costs.

The flow rate of the cooling water will also affect the units efficiency.

My fingers are crossed that we can get it working and provide a very efficient and environmental way to cool the house geothermally without the nasty compressor noise outside the room.

    Any input or thoughts?

  11. Will be traveling to BKK from C. Rai and hoping to find some of my favorite grocery items. C. Rai is limited in selection (Big C and Makro) of western foods such as cereals and natural foods that can be found in large natural food stores in the West. Rim Ping Supermarket in C. Mai has a good Western food selection. Is there a store like this in BKK?

    Thanks

  12. Does anyone know if this applies to both international and domestic flights.

As in are the smaller airports in Thailand enforcing this measure on domestic flights to BKK? Security is going to have their hands full explaing this rule to the grandmothers loaded down with special food and drink from Isan to take the the kids in BKK!

  13. Just ask you overseas bank to trasnfer the US$ and then ask the Thai bank for the exchange certificate.

If they ask why, you need it for the immigration "tamruat khor muang".

You may have to wait a day or two as the cert will have to come from head office.

I am still confused about this - Are you saying have the bank in the U.S. transfer the funds to your $U.S. account here in Thailand or to your Thai Bhat account? The 'exchange certificate' you are talking about - what exactly is this ? Something I have never understood is can you have the equivalent of 800K bhat in your $U.S. account (in Thailand) for 3 months instead of actually having the 800K in your bhat account. Is this what you mean by the 'exchange certificate'?

Friends of mine complain constantly about getting poor exchange rates (considerably lower than bank posted rates) when they transfer money into the country.

  14. Can anyone recommend a supplier for quality bamboo and other hardwood flooring in LOS.

Also from my research most T & G hardwood flooring is installed in LOS above a concrete subfloor using adhesives - In Canada we use a plywood subfloor and specialized nailer for this. Does anyone have experience with installing T & G flooring in LOS. The guys that buy the old wood houses and plane down the old wood for flooring seem to face screwing it directly to the subfloor as the wood has no T & G.

  15. I just purchased a 3 rai raw piece of land near Chaing Rai. The soil is a reddish brown, the same throughout the area. I am not sure what the soil consists of. Is there a way to have it tested?

Currently there is only one large tree on the property and a few bananas and some weeds. If the land was farmed it was some ago. The land slopes down on a continuous slope to a small lake. I want to plant a variety of fruit trees (grapefruit, oranges, papaya, dragon fruit, and avocado). I want to be sure that these will grow in my soil. Any ideas on the best way to find this out.

Also I was also looking for a recommendation on varieties of trees to plant for shade for the house. I would like something that grows fast has good foliage for shade.

Can good quality top soil be ordered in Thailand and if so any idea the cost?

    Thanks for your help!

  16. Thanks Lopburi!

I guess I will have to apply for the one year extension of stay. However when I spoke with the immigration office in my area they said they would only grant a 3 month extension and I would have to go to BKK to apply for the one year. I am here as a volunteer and having to pay for extensions every 3 months or travel to BKK is costly for the organization I am assisting.

So that I am clear on the rules for future travel - do I understand it correctly that if I obtain a multiple entry Non-O outsdie of Thailand then I would not have to apply for an extension of stay but just leave the country every 90 days until the year is complete? The benefit of this is the organization is located close to a border crossing.

    Thank you

  17. I am in L.O.S. on a single entry Non -O and my 90 days expire in 3 weeks.

I need to leave the country to go to China, but where I am going there is no Thai consulate to get another visa. Is it possible to apply for a multiple re-entry permit with this type of visa? I have not applied for a one year extension of stay and would prefer not to as I am told that the immigration office in my area can take up to a month to grant this. And if successful does this mean that I can now leave and return to Thailand every 90 days prior to completing the one year without applying for an extension of stay?

  18. Recently planted 6 papayas (all about 14 - 16 inches in height) that I purchased from the local garden center. I planted in fairly sandy soil where the plants are exposed to direct sunlight for most of the day. After one week the leaves on 3 of the plants have turned yellow and droped off. There are many other mature papayas growing in our compound in both sandy and clay type soil.

Any suggestions to why they are dying would be appreciated. Thanks.

  19. Haved lived in C. Rai for 3 years and the only way to see the North is by car! As to a driver you really dont need one unless you are useless with maps and afraid of the roads - the majority of roads here are excellent both in their condition and markings. There are many reasonable hotels and guest houses in C. Rai and the whole province - if you let me know your budget I can make some recommendations. I can also get you a toyota 4 door for 800 bhat a day, which is a great deal for here.
