Please bear with me. I'm old now, and, even when I wasn't, I was fairly technically challenged.
About 14 years ago I bought a Yamaha RX-V467 Home Theatre setup: receiver (already obsolescent) and 5 speakers (please see photo). I no longer use the rear speakers as my room is too small for them. Until recently, the system worked, but over the past few years the sound became not less in power, but less clear, especially for spoken voices, which is what I most care about. My hearing has deteriorated and the tonal range I can decipher is much reduced. I'm English, but use English subtitles for English language films and TV programmes. Recently, the receiver expired completely, and it's certainly not worth any attempt to repair. (Available free to anyone in Pattaya who would like to play with it. DM me.)
I do not stream. I effectively use the television only as a monitor for my TX6 Android box. All my video and audio material (variable, of course) comes from an external computer drive. The routing was until recently: external drive by USB to TX6 box; TX6 by HDMI to Yamaha receiver; Yamaha receiver by HDMI to TV for video only and by direct cable to the three speakers for audio. Since the death of the transceiver, the TX6 now links directly to the TV and I am dependent on the mediocre TV sound quality.
First question. I have no reason to suspect any significant deterioration of the speakers, so is it likely I can get a decent result by buying a new cheap receiver/amplifier and attaching it to the rest of my existing equipment in the same manner as before? If so, any recommendations under 5,000 baht. Preferably, well under 5,000 baht.
Second question. Is there a better way to go, and what, if anything, might I gain from upgrading the TX6 box?
Thank you all in advance.
