  1. Just had my first claim with ACS about 3 weeks ago. I asked the medical advisors in HongKong via email to quarantee for a knee surgery in ChiangMai. They want to be informed 10 days in advance, I had only 4 days left. I sent the doctors cost estimate and the MRI report and got approval within 1 day.

Interesting to add: The accounting department at the hospital was not really well organized. They found out about the quaranteed cost only at the day I left the hospital. Needless to say that I mentioned the quarantee several times while checking in.

The hospital cost got up by approx. 40% after that ( within 2 hours ). I refused to sign the bill and after some discussion they offered a big discount.............................Greed or disorganized or both?

  2. Beware of Pacific Cool Chic

I stayed for 1 month in Pacific Mansion ( Pacific Cool  Chic ) in July. Huay Kaew is just arround the corner .

The room had good space, old but ok..

The monthly rental was 6300Baht , seemed ok, but at the end the electricy bill came over 3000 Baht. I was there 4 weeks, only during the week. Aircon in the afternoon till night at 25-28 Celsius, off during the night.

Either really bad, old aircon or something goes very wrong in this place.

We have a big propperty with 2 houses etc. and pay approx. the same for a month.

    All together, not worth it!

I stayed last year at Smith Residence for 7500Baht/month. With the same time and aircon management I paid 650Baht for electricity. This place was ok , not only for this reason.

  3. In Europe I bought all my electronics on the internet , never had any problems.

Now I was looking for a new computer and a modem-router here . Both of them were not available in ChiangMai , which seems to be deep province electronic-wise, because I found these things before in BKK..

I found some internet shops. One had both devices available, delivery time 24-48 hours. The shops name is CharngNoi.com (Simple Tech Ltd.).

After the order on Sunday, April 4th , they told us delivery was not possible before Songran . Remember the 24-48hours delivery promise ! A week was not enough!

Ok, we called them several times to make sure they had the devices in stock. Finally , on Monday , April 22nd , they said they were ready and I transferred the money. The items should be sent on Tuesday afternoon- They were ordered including EMS delivery.

On Tuesday we were told that EMS ( 2 days delivery time ) was not safe enough. Things could get broken, but a safer way of transportation would deliver directly to our home on Friday ( today, same week, same month, same year ).

Today is Friday ! We were called just to tell us the delivery to our place in ChiangDao is only possible on next Thursday.

My wife is Thai , she could stay calm, I could not.

The last call this afternoon came from a transportation company in CNX , promising delivery tormorrow .

I must add that the lady in the custome service of tis company was very friendly and professional. A conversation in English was possble She tried to help.

    Wll be continued !

  4. This happened today to my wife:

She was trying to get cash from the Bangkok Bank ATM in ChiangDao using her Kasikorn Bank Card. After the input of the PIN and her money request nothing happened , just an "out off order " info occured on the screen and she got the card back. It was not possible to get a print-out.

Later my wife got an SMS from Kasikorn Bank saying that 17 000BAHT had been withdrawn from her account.

Is this the new way of increasing profits at Bangkok Bank?

We will see what the Kasikorn Bank will do about it ?!

  5. You should call them back, and insist on them fixing it. Be harsh. Tell them you will call the parent company, and tell them how you can't get the service center in Thailand (where you unforunately bought it) to honor the warranty. Let us know what happens after they stop laughing.

I copied my Thaivisa post and sent it to Hitachi in Bangkok. Next day they offered help by sending a technician. Problems seems to be their "service" center in Chiangmai.

If such things happen to me I will not consider this company for buyings anymore unless I have to.

  6. If it's the same one as mine, one with a water tank in the fridge section that feeds into the freezer, you may need to just de-ice it. The ice shute/crusher jammed up after a while and I tried to get the bucket part out of the freezer where the ice goes down the shute. Had to take all the ice out and then use the wifes hair dryer around the seam to melt the ice a bit in the crusher part.

Then you can pull the metal handle in the bucket up and it should come apart from the door. plenty of ice jammed up in the gears and just needed to wait for it to melt. Might fix your problem with the fridge at least?

    Good advice!

Bucket part could no be removed anymore, but did it finally your way.

Hitachi's way of warranty was worth mentioning in this forum anyway.

  7. They seem willing to honor the warranty, but I doubt if it includes transportation to the store.

Seems like me that with stuff like that they just send out a technician to the location. No need for it to be returned to the shop.

They refused to send a technician.Said it is to expensive. No need for transportation of a big frigde normally, repair it on the spot.

  8. I liked Hitachi household devices so far.

A few month ago we bought a Hitachi refrigerator at HomePro Chiangmai. The machine was rather big including an ice and cold water maker. The price included transportation to ChiangDao, 70km from CNX.

10 days ago the ice maker was not working anymore. We called the service number and they promised help within 2-3 days. After 10 days(!) the service center from Chiangmai called me and explained in English(!), that we are too far away and sending a service man was just too expensive. We should bring the fridge to Chiangmai.

This explains what a Hitachi warranty is worth . Nothing, at least if your are not residing in a big city.

Wish you all "cool" days without Hitachi.

  9. Yes. Thailand should bring in this law to prohibit older Farangs and other foreigners from marrying very young women .

I have seen some farangs with young wives who could be their grand daughters!.

Laos and Cambodia have enacted these law: why not Thailand.

Yes, but then older Thai nationals should be prohibited from marrying young women, regardless of their nationality, too . And , for anybody, having a Mia Noi should of cause be prohibited . I have seen older Thais with their innocent young Mia Noi. A shame , or what?

Please do not forget, if their is no marriage , their will be no pension coming into Thailand after the old farang is dead. Good for the rest of the world.

  11. Within a few days the job was done by two technicians who obviously had a lot of experience putting film on large windows.

They had ladders and all the tools.

    They were efficient and precise.

And they cleaned up neatly after finishing.

    Oneman,

I am living in the Chiangmai area. Could you give a hint , what company worked for you?

  12. That is not the first priority :.....quality schools would have good facilities, a decent library and at least one personal computer per 10 students...

The schools need teachers , who are able to speak English . Obviously , even the "English Teachers" cannot.

Our foster daughter cannot tell easy words or even sentences( I am... , you are.., week days etc. etc. ). What were they doing in pre-school and 3 years regular school ?

Parents should no pay any extra money for extra teaching ( does not work , just a kind of tea money ). Teachers should be paid for good results , not just for being at school.

  13. I would guess you grossly overestimate the number of Brits. And since when are Brits not Europeans??

Maybe you overestimate the number of English speakers if you are an English speaker yourself. If you ask a German you will certainly get the answer that there are more Germans around here than Brits....

If you go to Koh Lanta and there around you will find more Scandinavians....if you are around Sukhumvit you see more people from Arab countries...

I would really like to see some well researched statistics - personal and regional "perceptions" cannot be trusted

    I completely agree!

Just came back from a weekly meeting of foreigners here with a nice meal and some drinks:1 Dutch,1 Belgian,1 French, 2, Germans, 2 Japanese, 1 USA .

But what does it mean ? Nationalities are really coming together.
