    It won't work because:

    1) Low education and lack of ambition of the population

    2) Lack of quality natural resources

    3) Lack of quality engineering

    4) Rampant air and water pollution.

Most cities today are not if you build it they will come. It is we are already rich and getting richer. That said they certainly can improve it some.

Yes, but it was a nice word salad!

  2. I'm looking to get new irons, and I'm amazed that, here in the Pattaya area, there doesn't seem to be an option to try out clubs on a driving range before you buy them.  The best I found is a couple 9f places that you can hit into anet.

I'm willing to travel to Bangkok, if neccesary, if I can find a place to really try out different demo clubs.

    Thoughts?

  3. I'm planning to move in July, and I have some stuff that I would like to bring, but I have really no idea how much it should cost and who I should ask for quotes.  There are a ton of companies that advertise this on the internet, but they all seem a bit dodgy.  Obviously, if it gets too expensive or too burdensome, I could just sell or give away everything, but I want to at least be informed on the cost/process/taxes before making that decision.

Anyone else go down this route?  Any recommendations for companies to use?

    Thx

  4. Glad to see the usual TV kvetching.....

The flight in question that started this conversation left for Sapporo at midnight, so I would hope they would NOT serve a full meal, as this would disrupt the entire cabin for 2 hours.  A sandwich/snack handout is entirely appropriate.

And WRT charging people who poach seats, I'm all for it.  They d9nt let people just take open business class seats.  Why should they let people take open seats that anyone else would have to pay a premium for?

How much does it cost to eat at Gaggan?
Gaggan serves dinner nightly, with sittings from 6pm and 9pm. The 18-course degustation – known as the Gaggan Experience – costs 4000 baht plus a 10 per cent service charge and 7 per cent VAT (about $180)

However that was in Jan 2017. It also says its the 7th 'best' restaurant in the world.

    Still doubt ill be going.

Given that the restaurant is closing in 2 weeks, I think it's a safe bet you wont be going.

I've been twice.  Both times it was 23 courses.  First time was 5000++ per person.  Second time it was 6000++ per person.  Definitely lately not cheap, but if I went to, say, Per Se in NYC or the French Laundry in Napa, i would expect to pay $500++ pp.  So compared to comparable restaurants, it isnt outrageous.

I get that not everyone is going to want to go to a restaurant like Gaggan.   But it seems petty and, frankly, dumb to bash a place you have clearly never been to.

  6. There are two wines that I recall as being superb although many others have been drunk.
One was Domaine de la Romanee-Conti which was over 40 years ago and the other was Heitz Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon also some 40 years ago. Still remember the taste. For those who disclaim  wine, perhaps because you have never had a good bottle. [emoji485]

    I'm seriously jealous....

Only 4 acre plot, producing the most expensive wine on the world. Probably not worth the 10,000 euros a bottle, but I'd take a glass is someone offered it.20180719_141131.jpeg

  7. Hi all

I am currently in the midst of a new build (abut 25% complete), and I have been contemplating installing (or preparing to install) things like:

    • Smart lighting - being able to program lighting "scenes", and control remotely via smart phone app
    • Smart door locks
    • IOT security system
    • Smart AC control

The offerings have recently, in the last year or two, become more robust. Plenty of options in the US and UK. But seemingly little so far in Thailand.

Now before we get too far here, I can already hear the chorus of "Thai electricians are too dim-witted to do this" replies. I actually have a very good electrician, and I have no qualms about his ability to do the necessary wiring.

Here is what I do know .... all wiring must be 3 wire back to the source/junction box .... Live, Neutral, and Ground. Also, switch junction boxes need to be large enough to accommodate the smart dimmer/switch modules.

I am curious if anyone has experience with these systems thus far. Any local suppliers? Any real experience here installing and owning? Do I need to source from the UK (US is the wrong voltage)?

    Thanks

  8. The Dreamliner is pretty cramped for people six-foot or more. I couldn't get comfortable in their Business-First seat. It's just too short and narrow. Also, the height of the cabin is infringed upon by the ceiling that curves in. See if you can catch an A380 on the route that you want. Good luck. Maybe with all of the surplus oil that's sloshing around the world, Boeing could put out a more spacious model - the 789? I don't think that airlines would relinquish any of their fuel savings though.

Hard to blame Boeing for an airline fitting out a plane with a cramped seating plan. There are comfortable business class 787's (ANA, Qatar), and not so comfortable ones.
