  1. I am in Bangkok for a couple of months work and am looking for a gym (preferably Sukhumvit area) that has decent stationary bikes/systems like peloton or swift to keep up my cycling fitness whilst here.

    can anyone recommend somewhere?

somewhere between asoke and ekamai would be ideal.

    thanks!

  2. Its bye from me as I fly tomorrow, be safe everyone.

To the crypto haters ... Theres a lot of tropes being used which are not true but you are right to question the validity of crypto, the crypto lovers should also question it more. You may also need to question the validity of our current financial systems more?

To the crypto supporters .... a lot of tropes also being used, you may believe in crypto but you may need to question your belief a little more?

To those sat in the middle .... I am sat with you, I actively invest but I am a born sceptic.

I don't claim to be anything more than an enthusiastic gambler trying to make a hedged bet on the future. I hope nobody has serious losses and that includes myself :+)

  3. I sold my condo a month ago in central Bangkok. I was told by many that selling them was nigh on impossible. I had about 4 viewings a week and first offer was within two weeks of listing. There are lots of young Thai couples buying in central Bangkok based on my experience.

When the Chinese come back I think it will seriously hot up but for the new units that are coming online.

If I were to return I would rent but if you are looking at a home for multiple years (say 10) buying makes sense.

  4. Inflation caused by money printing. The US, UK and EU have printed masses of money and thats causing inflation and a probable recession looming.

The weird one is that the US market is so large that the fear of inflation/recession is causing a run TO the dollar away from stocks, futures, etc. A massive run at the moment, and thats causing the dollar to strengthen massively while markets crash. This is of course counter intuitive because inflation weakens the spending power of the dollar at home.

The baht is actually weakening and has been for some time BUT I personally expect that to change rapidly once the US announces a peak is reached in inflation because the money will then run from the dollar to other holdings. Tonight is CPI day in the US, watch for big changes in the dollar depending if thats above or below 8.1%.

One could argue that baht currency movements are not as direct result of whatever Thailand does but what other currencies do.

As to the girls to work in the bars she says that is not an issue she says that there are lots of girls.  Just worries about the bars and how many will be able to make money.

It is pretty depressing on the soi now as there are no lights on and with her in the middle even with the pool tables it is quiet.

Pre-covid it was already dead as a dodo compared to previous years. The night market was the only thing keeping it going.

I have wondered for the past few years why health insurance is required if your original visa was type O-A, but no health insurance required if your original visa was type O?

    I don't know :+)

For retirees -  I have often wondered if its simply that health insurance is in the original requirements for the visa at source for the long stay O-A visa and as the Non O is limited duration its not required. I can understand that, one needing health insurance for the long stay visa.

Its on the extension of stay that it becomes less logical.  Maybe they are simply sticking to the rules as they are written (original terms of the visa).

I am torn (based on logic) if the health insurance for the O-A is correct and the lack of it for the O ext of stay is simply an oversight. But its been that way for a long time. I suppose time will tell if they are going to level the playing field. I suspect so.

  7. The tailor mentioned in these posts does not even make the suits, all the Indian shop fronts use Thai sweatshops to make up the suits, the tailors are cloth sales and middlemen for the Thai sweatshops.

The tailors many are noting (starts with Ra..) did not even make good quality suits 20 years ago at the hey day never mind now. An off the rack suit from the UK high street was better quality, I say this after having bought both.

They do meet a lot of the dignitaries in the photos BUT not at their shops. They are big donors, especially to the US chamber of commerce and when a dignity comes to town theres usually a chamber of commerce dinner/gala and a line-up for a photo gig. I know I have been.

There are good Thai tailors like Dulis, but its 80 grand a suit. My last trip to the UK I bought a beautiful Italian wool suit, probably the highest and best made I have owned - from an outlet mall! Handmade suits in general are not very good IMHO.

They obviously work if you are super tall or super wide.
