  1. Under-5 mortality rate (per 1000 children per year)

    Thailand 15.1

    UK 6.0

    Source: United Nations Population Division

For children living in poverty in Thailand in Isaan the rate will certainly be considerably higher. Get your priorities dam_n straight. The mother-in-law's debt is way down on the list. Remove your child from this utterly unnecessary disadvantageous position. This is clearly your top priority.

Don't for the life of you listen to this guy. He is trying to scare you into believing that your kid is more likely to die in Thailand than in UK. It's like they say, any statistics can be presented/manipulated to support a point of view. What a crock! There are certain very important factors about living in Thailand that cant be measured or quantified and in my opinion they most defiantly outweigh the negatives, especially for a child growing up. One being community, another being family. You know what I mean. You are more than able to provide a decent early education for your child here in Thailand and I think it is advantageous to do so. I watched your video, your baby looks like a little angel and your wife, to me, looks honest enough. I would do as suggested above and find out more about the loan. It could be a way to test you, to see if you've really been lying about your financial situation and have a secret falang stash somewhere. But be careful not to offend buy asking to see proof. I've seen people in debt in Thailand to loan sharks and it ain't pretty. You can be sure that if the debt is real then the shark has found out about you and has decided to call in the debt. If that's the case it might be time for you to present yourself to the shark and make an arrangement.

That's a pretty impressive gash on your leg there too, was it a motorcycle or a car crash?

    p.s. nice tunes!!

  2. Ok I will let you in the secret

    You must be….

-Equal or better status than her (financially, academically, ect)

-Be ready to have a few "little fanciman" at a moment notice (her biological clock is ticking)

-Must be "socially" acceptable by her peers, family, and thai society in general

-Be able to take a role of "a trophy husband", someone she can show off to her friends, and family – having a big big face. Someone she can be proud of and others will be full of envy.(oh yeah, esp this part!)

    And

Two other things she's not particular looking for are.....a maid and a doormat.

Be able to….talk sexy, walk sexy, and smell sexy are not required, however still looking sexy after the light comes on…. is a must! :o

    Good luck

    Agreed, read this post!!

Can we change the topic to something more interesting like "How much is the most a wealthy Thai women has offered you for a screw?" :D

  3. Can someone recommend a good/cheap/efficient etc company/organization for learning Thai. Is it best to take a program with a Uni? What Uni's offer programs? Has anyone had any good or bad experiences? I would like to apply with somewhere that could provide a ED visa as I am curently studying and working part time but am not eligible for a Non-B visa through work (part time) and can not get a ED visa through school..

If anyone has any good info you can PM me, thanks!

  4. Deane-Jones..........has beaten her drug addiction by sheer will.

So being banged up in a Thai prison for 3 years with no access to drugs has nothing to do with it?

Or do they hand out heroin to addicts in the prisons here?

No, you have to pay for it... :o

From everything I've read and heard, it's quite available.

Yes, from everything I've read you can get anything in a Thai prison if you have the money. Didn't a guy just get arrested for running an operation which exported heroin from Thailand to the US, out of a Thai prison? Also some accounts say that life in a Thai prison is unbearable without the use of heroin.

Also forgive me for my naivety as I've little to no experience with heroin but isn't 10 grams an awfully small amount to get the death sentence for? Should the article say 10kg?

  5. The benefits on learning Thai (or at least making an effort) are limitless:

Don't pay falang prices, Girls will flock to you, You can have a joke with almost everyone you meet, You can have a beer with almost everyone you meet, less problems with miscommunication, alot more respect.

Did I mention the fact that girls will flock to you?

Yes, you mentioned it twice. PeaceBlondie, I don't think it is my place to educate him, but perhaps you might want to... :D

    :o ahh my bad, sorry

  6. No offence man but 4 years and you can't say 'Tao Rai'?? I've seen guys like that who have lived here for 5+ years and they strugle on a daily basis to get by, not financially but oher ways.

What you have said about the benefits of speaking a little Spanish in Latin countries applies to Thailand also.

If you had learnt to speak some Thai I doubt you would be having these feelings now.

I get bored of the food now and then and various other things about Thailand but it's like you said with the Taxi, if you can speak Thai you can get the low down on Taksin's crimes and what not else. It really makes life a whole lot happier & easier here.

It's never to late to learn, your only barrier (IMHO) is ones own attitude, ie. you have got to want to learn. Get some tuition! Anyway if you do go to Nicaragua or Costa Rica be kind enough to post a report for us all, and good luck!

  7. Well this thai attitude has nothing to do with asia . It is an example ; NO other place on earth would repeatedly refer to all foreigners(including 'permanent residents'), as aliens, lack of english language knowledge, or what.. Now just flying back i saw a thai movie that made me cringe, which should be a must for all foreigners , who decide to settle here .

i can't remember the title properly(was too tired) but it is something like (Thai renessance), about a thai gal going 100 years into the past .. Absolute must, for all thai residents ! Also will help you to understand the attitudes, they laugh at you, because you are alien, and thus deserve different treatment, not that they'd laugh if something would happen to their relatives, or friends ..

    So

Yeah I that film was on Thai TV about 2 years ago, it had english subtitles so I watched it!

This is what I remember of it.

It portrays this thai woman who single handedly (via a trusted the kings retainer) travels back time and tries to get the British and French (who are (apparently) up to no good in trying to do unfair trade agreements etc) diplomats to be wholly in the Thais favour. Basically it's very clever piece of subtle propaganda for unknowing thais who watch it.

It all culminates in the thai woman returning back to modern day Bangkok where history has gone in the favour of the English and French and a massive Eiffal tower has been built slap bang on top of bangkok! Everyones speaking french, Thais have been colonised end is nigh etc! Shock, horror etc.

Woman rushes back to Siamsville era via the time tunnel and manages to get everything fixed and back to normal.

It was made at the height of Toxins administration and is heavily nationist and paints the foreigner as a dangerous meddler ready to take over Thailand unless vigilance is used in dealing with them.

That was my take on it anyway.

There was me, another american and his thai girlfriend watching it with us. The thai girl pretty much believed that the film was real; the evil empire of farangs was defeated and Thailand is free today because of it!

    Thais love the Thais :D

However, I have seen some thai tv dramas where the farang is portrayed as young and weathy expat who speaks thai (albeit slowly) and is a source of mystery to some of the thai girls :o

Nothing overt or romantic is shown but it seemed reminiscant of those characters who are in their 30s and 40s and have made their fortune and seek out travel in foreign lands.

Also I recently saw a Thai Kareoke video where one of the songs was being sung in thai by a farang, it was not dubbed and it sounded pretty good. I can't think of the artists name though :D

So the point is that Falangs enjoy a variety of roles in Thai television and cinema.

As for the 'propaganda' movie, it's hard to believe white man could be seen as imperilistic conquers, right? A quick look at history revels that white man WAS the dangerous meddler at the time (not just in Thailand) and hats off to whoever fended them off so sucessfully. That said it would be nice to be able to get one of them french rolls from Laos in Bangkok..

  8. How does the gov't know that there is an increase in human trafficing in the north?

Really, what do they base this on?

If they know who is doing it then why don't they stop it?

Seems like this is just fantasy.

There was an extremely damning article about this very same subject in The Nation last week. How can that be fantasy?......unless the whole story was a pack of lies!

Since you have seent he article in the Nation last week then please tell us what is the basis for their assertion that human trafficing in the north has increased. How did they learn this....what were the numbers before and what are the numbers now....and how were these numbers arrived at.

Chownah - Firstly the orginal article clearly says that it is Trafcord who is supplying the figures, Trafcord being a NGO - Non-Government Organization, you might take the time to read the article next time.

Trafcord work with the police in the north of Thailand to stop the traficking of women & children, they are defiently one of the more well known NGO's here. One would expect they have a detailed knowledge of the cases of people traficking (that are caught) due to their close links with the police. They possibly even keep a record of the cases they take up? It might even be on their website. You could contact them and get back to us with your discoveries!! http://www.trafcord.org/

Whether the figures are accurate or not I don't know, it's possible Trafcord are attempting to increase funding by making the problem seem bigger than it is however I fail to see how any attention to such an important matter could be bad attention.

Secondly it's proven fact (arrests & statements from victims) that in many cases it is the public servants who are assisting in the trafficking/exploiting of the said children.

On the topic of child trafficking and pornography, and it is mostly children/young women that are trafficked, I visited Pantip plaza the other day, after being hounded non-stop for the duration of my visit I finially agreed to take a look at some X movies. I was sickened to see a folder devoted entirely to pedophileia. How can this be? In the most famous computer plaza in Thailand they are openly displaying and selling no less than 50 VCD's featuring very young children! Where are all these NGO's? Where are the FBI agents? Interpol? Ha!

Not only that but everyone who has done their visa run to Mae Sai has likely been hounded by touts saying 'Hey mister, you want young girl? I have girl 13-14, you want?'

If I have children I will be locking them in chasity belts and moving to a nice village somewhere where they don't have TV or internet.

  9. drenoi, u must be a 30- something in age without any knowledge of history :
    40+
    REALLY??!!

most of us 40+ are the tail end of the 1960-70-80 light users; most of us grew up got married had kids and put our party reefer use aside... i could write a book about grow your own in the woods... so could most of the kids in my high school, in my university, in my sister's school/uni, etc. PCB (angel dust) was the main cause of psychotic deaths in our area, now crack apparently is (i dont live in the states anymore).

i dont think druggies are red eyed monsters. i think they are sad idiots.

    Obviously I'm 30-

I was giving my opinion on why drug users are demonized in society. As you said above you've had experience with drugs, you don't think druggies are red eyed monsters who are going to rob you and steal your money for another toke on the bong, but there are alot of people who haven't had an association with drugs or people who use drugs who do think like that. It seams you are not the type of person who demonizes people who choose to experiment with outlawed substances, which I was refering to. My point was that I believe people are demonized because others fear them because of sustained campaings by governments in your era and now.

  10. Drug use causes problems sometimes, it's true. But demonizing drug users doesn't help anything. Some people can handle drugs, some people can't. The stigma attached to drug use means that the only drug users you can identify as such are sad, out of control cases -- because the lawyer who does E with her boyfriend on weekends, the student who has a joint to celebrate after his term exams aren't going to declare in public "hey! I do drugs!"

I'm not saying all drug use is good - why not? I always feel good when I take drugs!! :D just kidding!! I've never tried drugs! Drugs are bad, down with dope, up with hope!!! -- but it doesn't make sense to lump all of it into the same category either.

Did you know that most Western countries once produced cocaine?

That China's opium war was fought to prevent the British from selling opium in China?

That racism was a major factor in the adoption of the first drug laws in North America -- in Canada against Chinese laborers no longer needed once the railroads were finished, in the U.S. against the "Negro threat"? In some cases the official signing the laws into being had never heard of the drugs they were outlawing.

That despite permissive, moderate and harsh laws about marijuanas, respectively, The Netherlands, Canada and the U.S. have roughly the same percent of the population who smokes marijuana?

I knew all those things :o I think the problem is mainly with peoples' perceptions and the fear that has been sown into the minds of everyone over a sustained period of time (40+ years). People who experiment with substances are all percieved as junkies by anyone who doesn't know better. If you've ever smoked some grass or dropped an E then you're out of control, have glowing red eyes like the devil and are likely to rob everyone in the neighbour hood in order to pay for your next joint :D !! Refer Madness!! If you take a toke you're gonna be a rapist! Its what most older 40+ people I know think until you tell them the truth.

For me, the thing to remember is: Addict or not, they are still humans beings.

  11. :o

I would say looking at what websites have any info on hepacap that it is a liver detox type of treatment, you could compare the ingredients in it with more mainstream liver detox treatments and see if they have the same ingredients. Although it seems to be solely a herbal treatment.

Also when i type hepacap into google alot of results come up in Thai, that gives a good indication that it's made in Thailand or only sold in Thailand?

    Anyway, good luck!

  12. The truth is Hep B isn't that serious, if you've done alot of reading you will know the approx. 85% of people clear the virus and are then immune to it for life. Whilst approx 15% will go on to get Chronic Hep B and eventually liver cirrocis.

My advice to you: Dont drink alcohol, eat lots of salads, avoid fatty/oiliy foods, drink lots of fluids, quit smoking for a while if you smoke but the most important this is don't drink!! If you do this you will be fine. From my experience not drinking or eating fatty food reduces the symptoms 100 fold. Basically, just give your liver a break for a few weeks...

Hep C is the one to watch out for with the odds reversed, that is 15% clear it and 85% go on to get chronic hepatitis.

As far as I know there is no treatment for Hepatitis but did a quick search for Hepacap and it looks like an alternative treatment? Anyway everything I've ever read says no treatment.

Yes I've had hep b also, yes it was a scary as <deleted> but supprisingly it cleared very quickly (2-3 weeks), oh and congratulations!! You've joined the short list of people to actually get something back from the Thais!

  13. If in 100 years time there is still the distinction of 1st world and 3rd World Countries, this country will be firmly in the 3rd world. At the moment they (the gov) seem to be doing their best to take things back to the dark ages, and I wish it was joke!

So let it happen! What would you prefer? A second or first world Thailand where the girls have money, don't need you any more and see you for who your really are, an overweight, respect less, beer guzzling sex addict? Also you'll see the amount of baht you get from your disability pension increase!

I think as foreigners we are unduly concerned, unless as has been mentioned you are running a business and may become liable for the activities of a member of staff.

I would be more concerned if I were a Thai national. This law concerning actions 'harmful' to the state would in my opinion be used to silence the internet activity or even take away the liberty of individuals within Thailand that may be in opposition to the current regime.

Isn't that what military junta's normally do? Silence the opposition to maintain their position.

I agree, I doubt that this law will have any affect at all on expats who aren't rapists, paedophiles or scam artists... It's possible it will affect business owners but nothing a little baht can't sort out for sure.

I have hardly seen any mention of this new law in the Thai press, certainly not in the Nation, and not in the international press? Anyway free speech has been dying here for a long time, and this is just another nail in the coffin.

How about an example? I'm sure there are still frequent rallies against the Junta, I haven't seen any reports of protesters being shot with rubber bullets or gassed like in some modern demo-crazies. As far as I can tell free speech here is as good as if not better than any other country in the world these days.

This is just a cyber crime law, there for yours and others' protection, as pointed out Thailand is one of the last to enact such a law.

  14. 6 month validity, 2 to 4 entry tourist visa: pre-obtained at a Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate and will result in the holder obtaining a 60 day 'permission to stay' stamp upon entry. If required, this type of visa may be extended by 30 days at an immigration office, but after that time the holder must leave the country. The holder may then return to the Kingdom and will obtain a second 60 day 'permission to stay' stamp which can also be extended as previous and then the holder must leave. After the stipulated number of entries the visa is "used". (Something else you might check on in Singapore, still gives you 90 days each entry but multiple entries).

    :o

To what i recall, all embassies and consulates only issue single entry visas now.

The consulate in my home country where I have gotten my tourist visas for the last few years has reduced the entries from 3 to 2. I think the consulate in Laos and neighbouring countries will only give a single entry tourist visa, right?

But to answer the orignial posters question, in my experience, yes. You should be able to get back to back tourist visas.

  15. Australia is having another crack at ruining Thailand's tourist industry, by putting the frighteners on traveling in the Kingdom. The second time in only a couple of months.

australia has one of the worst human abuses records in history; they have always been Asia's natural enemy, the yellow peril and keep australia white policies. It is only in the last few years that they have come to realise the importance of good relations with it's Asian neighbours, especially after being dumped by Britain & Europe who no longer require importing in bulk australia`s lamb produce.

In these troubled times, it is no longer absolutely safe to travel anywhere in the world, including all major cities. It appears that australia still regards many Asian countries as backward, dangerous and of inferior infrastructure.

Sadly australia is a leopard that cannot change its spots.

What a load of drivel. Where are your facts (let's not let facts get in the way of a good rant)

Human abuses - you don't see Australians cutting the heads off other Australians (women - children - teachers) based on peoples faith ...

Asian immigration ... I think as I walk around any Australian city that I can see a higher percentage of Asian people than the number of farang people I see when I visit Thailand (which I do regularly)

As for the inferior infrastructure ... thats a fact you cant ignore ... even the footpaths in Thailand aren't safe (not to mention the motor bikes)

I really don't understand the xenophobic attitude you have to Australia.

    I second that.

  16. Are you serious? You're way off mate, way off... It's the little guy who is getting ripped off, the honest hard worker who gets tricked into donating their money and sometimes their time to helping the lives of others.

I'm sorry if your pissed off at how things are run here, I don't necessarily agree with it either, but how you turned the subject of a falang crook who should not be a beggar, who has the means to get a job and not beg into me picking on the little guy and not standing up to corrupt officials is well beyond me. That is another subject entirely which we could discuss at great lengths and which has already been discussed at great lengths by countless others.

I am brave and moral, if you were sitting across from me now, i'll tell you to take your finger our of you a$$ and get a life! You got issues man.

  17. This guy is just asking people for money. They have the choice to give or not.

But people make this choice based on false information the beggar is supplying. It's a very basic con trick.

Exactly! It's a scam... His sign is a lie, his reason for asking for money is a lie and whenever anyone asks him about it he lies more. It's the same as a house and land scam, a share holder scam or any other scam and the people who peretrate these crimes take advantage of other people.

I am not manufacturing pretexts to be cruel, this guy is not asking people for money, you are living in fairy land & if you think that's cruel you probably live in prissy pink oh I broke a fingernail fairy land. Err.. no offence..

  18. It makes me really sick to look at most of the intolerant uncompassionate posts here - especially the ones filing complaints.

Why don't you guys get a life instead of mocking someone who's litteraly in the gutter. Judging beggars are just so ###### easy - even though you don't have a clue on who, why and for what reason - not to speak of that you yourselves probably have what you need in your lifes.

    <sigh>

    //Loke

Hi Loke, i'm sorry to say mate but i think youv'e missed the point, what a lot of people are saying is why dosn't he go to his embassy and then on to Holland were theres a system which will look after him. The reason the guys getting bad press is simple! the Thais in this country who are really poor don't have an option but this guy dose! :D
You know, seeing this video really bothers me.

I have lived and worked in Thailand for 10+ years. Thanks to some pretty good luck, a A LOT of hard work and following the rules, I have managed to stay here legally and have had a great and prosperous life.

Tourists like this are just plain wrong. This guy (and others like him) needs to go home. He can get on the dol in his own country if he needs money so badly.

    PLEASE ACT.

So there is a farang beggar in bangkok and so what?

There is another guy playing the Guitar on Silom in front of the CP tower and there is s spanish guy doing "Silver Man" at Suan Lum night Bazaar...

The end of the world is upon us?

Get real the lot of you, this is none of your concern or your business! Listen to you I feel you are even more prejudiced and more ignorant than the Thai about foreigners.

    [sandy]

I agree with this. Are U ppl, that vain. The He's a bum and I'm not, therory, or are you just jelous of the money he makes? Get real ppl.

Umm... Are you people blind? This is a scam artist, a professional liar, someone who's daily job and ambition is to defraud people of their mostly hard earned (or earned never-the-less) money. I'm am neither jealous of his lifestyle nor the income and only such small minded people would suggest that! What an attack, shut up you lot you're jealous! Who would be jealous of this guy? He is the scum, the lowest of lows, does he have any traits that women desire, i doubt that. It seems you are the people commenting on that which you know very little, how about going and checking this guy out before you open your trap?!

The difference between the Guitarist and the Silver man Sandy is that they are buskers, they perform for their money, and I'll put my left te$ticle on the fact that they make less than this scam artist.

Oh the poor guy he's stuck in a foreign country with no help and no way home and no friends to help him out, what a poor fellow I better help him out and give him some money so he can get that 7000baht he so desperately needs... :o

    fools!!

  19. Living in Korea or Thailand, I get stared at as well. And they also do not look away. I put it in the context of, in Western countries you can get punched in the face for staring, it's like a challenge..which to me, is really stupid... so the fact that Thai's or Korean's can stare openly without threat of violance is a good thing.

I think it mostly has to do with my mood at the time of the stare. Living in Asia for 4 years ...

I'm a guy, I felt the staring to be annoying/weird at first, now after 2-3 years living in Thailand i'm 'over it'. It IS a difference in our culture like Meme suggests. And I think also that it's a good thing. We are too strange back home & affraid to look at someone for fear of them 1. Punching us out, 2. Thinking we're gay, 3. Thinking we're checking out their partner... Don't be affraid, they're not thinking about doing anything bad or threatening at all (unlike guys back home??). Once you get more comfortable with it you you'll be alright, hang in there!
