  1. The pollution in Nakhon Phanom yesterday was so bad that it wasn't possible to see the Mekhong River from the road that runs alongside it. it was certainly painful on the eyes. My wife said that she doesn't remember seeing anything like it before. The neighbours claimed that it was result of farmers in Laos burning their fields, but the Met Office tells us better.

Oh, no, we thinking of moving there next month! Did this happen last year too & how long has it been going on?

  2. I did it fom the other direction:

I went from Siem Reap to Anlong Veng, 140km,, + 15 to the border at the border the immigration office was a shed half the size of my Dad's garden shed, there was no transport at all!!! I was very lucky to get a lift with a Thai businessman for 60km to the next town, then the bus was full so had to pay a taxi 1,000bt. But the immigration officer told me that there is a bus leaving for town from the casino at 4pm.

You could try O'Smach & then cross into Surin, there are many buses there to here Ubon Ratchatani.

  3. No Thai language schools in Ubon that I know of. I think showing some money coming into the country would help. A bank book with some transfers in would be good. This would be proof you are not working here. A trip farther afield might help. The consulate in Bali will do a 3 entry with 6 months validity if you can show one ticket out of the country.

Thanks again Joe, that's a good tip I never knew about that, a good option, I may try it. But, I really do love learning languages, I want to learn more Thai & Lao, very little English is used at home here with my girlfriend. Perhaps an online/Skype Thai language course would work for me here on the Mekong. Does anybody know of options on offer that are definitely not scams?

PS, Went to hopefully collect the visa at 2pm, was shown a list of requirements: evidence of 20,000bt, plane ticket leaving within 90 days, hotel reservation, travel itinerary, (having spoken to other applicants, they were given the list of requirements at the time of application, but, I WAS NOT given this info!).I was shown this list of what they wanted to see within 2 hrs of closing upon collection, which I could not do from Laos, so they gave me no visa at all, used up a page with the sticker & voided & I Iost the 2,000bt fee. Does anyone know if this voided sticker will cause me problems with either doing a final land border crossing or applying for an ED visa?

  4. How many have you gotten back to back?

They are going to draw the line sometime.

Yes too true Joe, have 2 years of a combination of tourist visas & land voas. I guess it's time for a change in my case, trouble is I have not managed to find any Thai language courses in Ubon that offer an ED visa, if anybody knows of one I would love to know.

PS, think the staff have been changed at the Sav Thai consulate & probably a rap on the knuckles from BKK following the visa stamp scam in KL, also heard from one guy that a guy was caught in Muk with one, somebody else mentioned that Sav was in on a slow long term selling on-too, but maybe hearsay, I don't know.

PPS, They are at present giving out lists of requirements with the form: Requiring travel itinerary, &/or return ticket, &/or proof of funds for a tourist visa!, This is definitely new, before it was like going to a candy store.

  5. I don't know what you think might have changed but if you read the link you provided it suggests that not much has changed! You can't buy a car without having longer term residency than just 30 days (which is specifically excluded) and 90 day reporting usually requires a one year visa.

Well it does say 'new' & I always thought one could only buy a car & register it own name on Non o or B visa, Am I wrong?

  6. Hi, saw this on a website today, Does anybody know if the regulations have changed?

I am in the Ubon Ratchatani area, does anybody have experience with them? I want to buy a car on a tourist visa.

''If you want to buy a car in Thailand, you need the following documents:

    Copy of your passport
, showing picture & visa page

    New:
    now you only need a
    Tourist Visa
    in your pass

New: now you only need a Tourist Visa in your passport.''

  7. Im using it daily now due to being at the farm for the school holidays and no problems at all with Australia Network

Hi Sezzzo, I'm about 90kms from Khemerat, can only get Thai TV here, how do you manage to get Australia Network, what set up have you got to get it?

Just go to any one of your sat tv shops where you live and explain to them that you want the sat setup that has Australia Network and BBC World. They are the only two channels worth watching. Thats all. We have quite a few guys here with this setup from various installers and they all understood what we wanted.

    Hope this helps

    Thaks for replying.

I'm in Khong Chiam, I did ask 2 shops here for English channels, they said mai die, what dish are you using, what reciever box? I have a dreambox plus internet, would that work here?

My girlfriend has got her papers from the village puyai ban stating she is single, her residence papers, police check & a mediical from Pakse. Is this enough to marry in Thailand at the amphur then put the papers in at the Lao embassy to get a marriage licence or does she need to get everything rubber stamped at the Ministry of Foriegn Affiars in Vientienne?
