1. From reading with interest the discussions on food and restaurants within the Krabi area it looks like Mr Lob is an informed advisor on this subject. From what I gather Mr Lob Burger King and the local indian are favourites of yours.

Could you recommend anything to those of us who are how to say.... "a little heavy on the floorboards" where we can get some healthy tucker?

    Many Thanks

If you stick to Thai food that does not have coconut milk (Tom yum soups, mixed vegetables, vegetarian fare, steamed fish) you'll lighten up quickly. I lost 5 kilos eating vegetarian and cutting out beer.

The things fattening about Thai foods are oils and coconut milk. Watch out for rice too as it can be a bulky staple like bread.

Check the pinned Krabi Restaurant for some suggestions.

    Good tip :o

Huggybear - i came 'all the way' to Thailand years back, but still enjoy the occasional BK. Each to their own.
You could say 'why do people bring their falang gf's 'all the way' to Thailand when there are Thai birds here' - same thing, EACH TO THEIR OWN.
OP - try Navrang Mahal for great Indian food - my mate is veggie and he says their dishes are superb. Sorry Huggybear - i also have an Indian once a week because it is great food - is that ok with you?
why the tude dude?
P.S.

My only point, and opinion (TO EACH THEIR OWN, right?) is that when you are in Thailand on vacation you should take advantage of the food you do not get at home.

Way overpriced Indian food? Can get at home. Burger King, same. A massive plate of Pad Thai for under 1$ U.S.? Or great seafood than much cheaper at home? Take advantage while you can.

    Is that o.k. with you?

Sorry, I just don't like thai dishes...

Too many times had some nice meat pieces among my vegetarian dishes, not nice, not nice at all :D

And since I am "coming all the way", I would like to eat in places where I don't have to be afraid everytime that is there meat in my plain rice dish this time or not... You get the point right? Or do you think I should just stay away from Thailand if I like to eat something else than thai food?

Sorry if I sound angry, but it's my holiday, my money... And I didn't ask "Do you think I should eat in indian/italian/burger king places or in thai places" :o

  3. I did read some comments saying the Navrang Mahal indian restaurant might be the best in Ao Nang.

But it also might be closed in summer months? Any idea if it is closed or open durin summer?

And what about the other indian restaurants in Ao Nang?

Can anyone tell me, is there any other indian restaurants or is the Navrang Mahal only one in Ao Nang?

  4. Ok, I have seen some pretty awesome pictures from Ao Nang (or more like from the islands near Ao Nang).

1.Any ideas, are those islands good day trip destinations in summer/July since it is the rainy season?

I mean, is the ocean too rocky/wavey for the long tail boats to get to the islands?

2.And what islands are best for day trips in summer (easy boat trip and so on...)?

Not so much after diving, just wanna take pics and relax on a pretty beach and see the nature :D

    3. And what good international places/restaurants there are in Ao Nang?

Maybe some italian? or indian? I heard there is Mc Donald (but is there Burger King? I think they have weggie burger is in Burger King but not in Mc

Donald)? Not saying that they are "good international places", but easy maybe... :o

4.Is Ao Nang places (restaurants, shops...) open in July? or more liek closed during the low season?

    :D

  5. I had some very mixed info about Khao Lak's beaches...

Some say the beaches are STILL in very bad shape after the Tsunami (dead corals on the beach-> hard to walk and stuff like that).

Some say the beaches aren't very nice at all (the ocean is brown, not blue like in postcards, water is very murky...).

And some say totally opposite. :o

Any comments about the "White Sand Beach"?

I think it is in the Pakarang area (some kilometers up north from Khao Lak)?

Anyone knows good site to see some recent beach pictures from Khao Lak?

And how is the road from Phuket's airport to Khao Lak?

In map it seems to be pretty straight... But are there lots of hills (ups+downs)?

    Or is it more flat...?

  6. Hi!

I did find this article about "tips" when going to tailor shop in Thailand.

What do you think? Do you have something to add?

One thing I noticed, was that this writer doens't pay the deposit money before he has seen some of the clothes done.

I thought the tailors want the deposit money same time when you place your oder?

    _________________________________________________________________

For the shirts, I have the female in the store pick out colors and patterns that match. I have a hard time visualizing when the material is still just material. I have her pick material for two shirts for every pair of slacks.

I also select which shirts I want a longer tail on. These are the ones that will get tucked in. I want some of the shirts to have a flat cut on the bottom to wear outside of the slacks.

I tell them not to put any stiff inserts into the collars. They will say that it will soften after a few washings. Don’t believe it. I tell them that if there is anything in the collar, I will cancel the order.

Since I am older and getting fatter, I also have them toss in a bit of elastic in the waistband in case I gain a pound or three.

I pay a minimum deposit once I have seen the first set completed and will pay in full when all is done. I give them a drop-dead date about 3 days before I depart to allow time for any mistakes.

Once the "tailor' has my order complete, I take the time to over every piece of clothing with a fine tooth comb. I check every stitch and ensure that there are no mistakes. I try on every piece of clothing to make sure they fit.

On occasion, I have even brought in a pair of slacks that I already own that fit me like a glove, and tell them to just make 6 more exactly the same.

You can get some good deals on tailor-made clothes in Thailand if you plan it out and do it properly. Don’t rush and don’t get talked into more expensive material than you really need.

  7. Chaweng Noi is said to be very quiet (like a private beach) and the beach better than main Chaweng...

So is there anything else than 4 hotels (Imperial, I- something, fair House, first bungalows)?

Any 7/11? Or any shop to buy drinks and small snacks? How about restaurants? tailor shops? :o

  8. Ok, thank you for clearing that one :o

So no Similan Islands, this time... Maybe next time will be in winter time :D

What do you people think about the island on the East side of Phuket (Koh Naka, Rang Yai, Coral island, Racha/Raya)? :D

Any good in July? I have read that the Racha/Raya island has very nice white sandy beach on the west side, but how about it's east side?

And what do you think about Koh Naka or Rang yai, beaches+water (murky or clear waters)?

  9. there are quite afew that offer day trips to the similans both from Khao Lak and from phuket

cost is usually about 4000 baht for two dives. long day but well worth the trip - in my opinion :D

Do you think it is easier to get to the Similan Islands from Khao Lak then from Phuket? Or just the same?

4000baht including 2 dives... Would that be cheaper if we won't want to dive? Or is thar even an option?

    So confused now :o

  10. i have a girlfriend up on the similans now. she has been camping there for over 3 weeks now and is not a diver. she goes out snorkeling every morning and every afternoon. yesterday vis was 25m and she was seeing packs of 25-30 sharks on each trip.

its not just for divers. many ppl go there just for snorkeling. (and, yes, i am a diver)

Oh, that sounds just perfect place even for snorkelers :o

Too bad if the July isn't good time to go there...

Soisong, what do you mean by "K.L. is the shortest distance but you still have to ge there from Phuket...

I've never been able to book the boat from Patong to Similans for a day trip..."?

Do you mean There are no tour operators/trip makers in Khao Lak and that's why we need to go to Phuket if we stay in K.L?

  11. Ermm... We aren't really divers.

We are more looking for some snorkeling + relaxing on the beautiful beach + taking photos...

And in pictures Similan Islands look just perfect place to do this :o

Or are the islands/trips for only for those who dive?

Do you think it is better/easier to get to the Similan Islands from Khao Lak than from Phuket? :D

  12. Phang Nga Bay remains sheltered all year round.

Khai Nok Island is not so sheltered and there may well be big waves and strong currents that time of year.

    Hey!

Do you know some nice islands near Phuket that are good to visit even in the summer?

Racha Yai? Or maybe the Coral island?

  13. For everyones info here is the link for the tide tables for Samui. but these tables work perfectly well for Koh Pha Ngan, and are probably 25 minutes different for Koh Tao

    http://www.navy.mi.th/hydro/tide07/sm07.xls

Tides are controlled by the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the earth and have nothing at all to do with wind direction or monsoon season, hence we are able to make very accurate predictions as to future tide heights. Future wind directions and wind speeds are not accurately predictable but the earth and the moons orbit is.

The tides in the Gulf of Thailand are Diurnal - we have a single high tide and a single low tide per tidal day. We actually have two tides per day one being very minor sometimes with as little as 5cm of movement which to all effests and purposes means we have only one tide per day.

    M.M.

Thank you Mosquitoman for the tide timetabel :o

    Did I understand it correctly:

The HT (M.) means Tide Height in meters?

So lets say July Tuesday 10 it looks like:

    time HT(M.)

    1010 1.01

    1915 2.06

10.10 am the tide is 1.01 meters and 19.15 it is 2.06 meters?

So the low tide is in 10.10 and high tide is in 19.15? :D

But what does this actually mean?

Does the water/beachfront in Chaweng/Chaweng Noi look ugly?

How about beaches in tao + nang Yuan island?

  14. Hello!

I am asking about tours/trips to the Khai Nok + Khai Nai islands in July?

I know the monsoon winds can make ocean very rocky/stormy...

And I have heard that the Similian islands on the west side are totally out of trip schedules in summer.

But are the Khai Nok + Khai Nai sheltered from the storms since they are on the east side of Phuket?

And same question for the Phang-Nga area+hongs... :o

  15. Very interisting!

So did I get this right:

July; the high tide is only in night time and during day there is the low tide?

So how are the low tides+high tides in Tao + Koh Phangang in July?

Same as Samui (hight tide in night + low tide in day time)? :o

Is the Tao/KPG any good for snorkeling in July, or is the water too far away? :D
