  1. This guy is just asking people for money. They have the choice to give or not.

But people make this choice based on false information the beggar is supplying. It's a very basic con trick.

Exactly! It's a scam... His sign is a lie, his reason for asking for money is a lie and whenever anyone asks him about it he lies more. It's the same as a house and land scam, a share holder scam or any other scam and the people who peretrate these crimes take advantage of other people.

I am not manufacturing pretexts to be cruel, this guy is not asking people for money, you are living in fairy land & if you think that's cruel you probably live in prissy pink oh I broke a fingernail fairy land. Err.. no offence..

Ok now we are going to make you put your money where you mouth is.

The biggest criminal in Thailand is the Thai government, telling you they have laws but enforcing them when they need a bribe.

You bribe government officials to get licences, you bribe police. The police pull you over in your car to extort bribes from you after they have encouraged you to break laws.

Then there are the laws against prostitution. If the thai government were tielling the truth they would shut the whole sex industry down, wouldn't they?

Now if you don't like false pretenses in order to get money, why don't you pick on someone bigger than you?

Do you have the balls for that?

No, you just go after one harmless guy who sits on a bridge with a sign. Almost all beggars have a little lie they tell. why don't you persecute all the Thai beggars who are doing the same thing?

You are such a brave and moral person.

    You have real principles.

  2. Umm... Are you people blind? This is a scam artist, a professional liar, someone who's daily job and ambition is to defraud people of their mostly hard earned (or earned never-the-less) money.

No, they are not blind. You are simply manufacturing pretexts to be cruel to other people.

A corrupt policeman who arrests you just so that he can get a bribe from you is the real criminal. A burglar who breaks into your house is taking money against your will and without your knowledge.

This guy is just asking people for money. They have the choice to give or not.

  3. what about the toilets without the bum guns? the ones with a tub of water and the round plasic bowl ?

how do those work? I assume you pour it down your lower back, hoping some of it trickles its way down under... unless one is meant to somehow reach under and project it upwards in a splash, risking a slip & possible contamination.

......... the LEFT hand is used to splash water UP to the anus and, if necessary, wash it a bit all from the small plastic bowl, and the remaining water dumped in the toilet.......then some fresh water from the tub in the plastic bowl and a good scrub of the left hand in the plastic bowl, dump the water and you're done. Thais are careful not to contaminate the water in the tub and to not use their right hand. This may not seem terribly sanitary to westerners but most health professionals know that SCRUBBING of the hands is more important than using soap. The upside is that Thais must have the cleanest bums in the world; most that I know are disgusted by the western use of toilet paper.

It would be unsanitary to wash your left hand IN the small cup.

The small cup should only be used to POUR water on the left hand. First for getting it wet so that the anus can be cleaned. Second, to rub the fingers of the left hand together to clean them.

The fingers of the left hand should never go into the small cup because this will contaminate the cup and then contaminate the large water bucket.

  4. I have a suggestion for the next video ...

I don't know if you know these "Bumfights" Videos, they were produced a few years ago ... and sold ... copied over the internet.

Basicly it's about filming beggars beat each other up or doing harmful things for them self or others ... for money

... Reality Street TV BKK ... with this dutch guy as victim ... could be a real success ... at least when sold on this forum ....

That would be like enjoying and/or profiting from the suffering and degradation of other people.

  5. It might help if the names of dodgy bus companies were posted here by those in a position to know.

The color of the bus would be help as well as the general design on the outside, and the name of the company.

If someone can TAKE PHOTOS AND POST THEM HERE, that would be immensely helpful.

I have taken 6 types of Thai busses although I cannot identify any of the them to standard I have requested.

    1. the luxury bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai - Mae Sai. Never a problem (shouldn't be considering how much you pay).

    2. the second class Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai - Mae Sai line. Everyone just calls it the green bus. No problems.

    3. the third class on the same run. bench seat 3 abreast both sides of the aisle. uncomfortable but no problem.

    4. the combination bus-van trip to Pai. Some of the vans look very shakey.

    5. The bus trip from Chiang Mai to Mae Sot. Some of these busses are pretty old, but no problems. Sometimes you take a van part way. The vans often looks shakey.

    6. the bus ride from Khao San Road to Butterworth. I advise everyone to avoid these companies. The busses are usually pretty new but the trip is hel_l. A van picks you up on Khao San rd and takes you to the bus terminal in Bkk which is insane. Then you find your bus with some difficulty.

The bus rid was uneventful although there are instances of theft on these busses. These busses not go to Butterworth as they are advertized: you have to get off again and catch first a song thiew to catch ancient passenger car that takes you to Butterworth. (3 farangs squeezed into the back seat.) Not pleasant.

  6. I've never seen it so bad, I flew out last week and we would have been at at 6000m before we cleared it. By comparison Bangkok was as clear as a bell.

So if you wait till the haze clears up north, it will be the rainy season. Then there will be danger of flooding.

  7. I ... am wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get a Visa at Mae Sai and go over the border to a market and just a quick look.

yes, you can go into Myanmar by yourself.

There is a schedule of fees posted at the Myanmar border crossing.

The main supervisor there speaks good English. You pay a certain amount (in thai baht) depending on how many days you want to stay in Myanmar.

You are restricted to certain areas in the north.

You cannot go to Yangon from TaChiLek.

My experience is that there is nothing to do in Burma (at least this part) except visiting the Buddhist monuments and a little shopping under the bridge at Mae Sai.

    There are no good restaurants.

The only reason I can imagine anyone would want to stay in Northern longer than the one-day visa run is to visit the gem mining areas or some other sort of professional business.

  8. Many posters say this person is in some way reprehensible.

For example, some say he is lazy. He is not any more lazy than anyone else. The purpose of a job is to make money. However one makes money is a job, by definition. One does not have to perform a preconceived action and get money from a second party to be doing a "job." He has a perfect right to "beg" for money, as long as he hurts no one. I have passed beggars many times. Sometimes I give, sometimes not. The beggar does not offend me by putting up a sign and sitting by the road. The hill-tribe ladies who wear black are offensive in Chiang Mai: they really harass the tourists.

Some say that "fate" will take care of him. This is a cowardly way of of saying nothing while secretly hoping harm will befall him. Fate will also take care of him if he inherits 10 million euros. People giving him money are not necessarily naive. You are not naive just because you give to someone who asks you for money. We do not have to judge the beggar on the basis of disability. So the donor is not naive for giving money to an able bodied beggar.

Or that he is stupid because something bad will happen to him in the future. This is also just a way of wishing that something bad would happen to him. The fact the Thailand has inhumane jails does not make the beggar at fault or deserving of that fate for begging.

A false idea is that begging is not work, whereas teaching english is work. Begging is work. Teaching english is "called" work is because someone gives you money for it. The definition of work is circular and arbitrary: whatever someone gives you money for is work. People who criticize the dutch man for getting money in this way are indulging in sadistic urges. They have a limited and rigid notion of what work is and what is right livelihood for a person.

Begging may be more work than teaching english or manipulating the stock market. Real-panhandlers in America use psychology. They need to know in advance who might give and then how to speak to them and what body language to use. The panhandler must know where to sit or stand and at what time of day. The beggar is risking his personal safety by being on the street.

The beggar is engaging in enforced meditation because he cannot read or watch tv or listen to the radio while begging: no one would give. This is actually very hard to do. If anyone takes one of the free buddhist meditation courses offered in Thailand, they will see that sitting and doing nothing is harder than physical movement. The difference between the beggar and the meditator is the beggar must give his attention to the outside world.

Just because he makes money this way does not make him a scammer, or the people who give fools. University degrees are a real scam.

The hardest thing about begging is the change in the self-image the beggar must undergo. Many myths in Western culture (Persephone) and of other cultures (Chinese voyage to the West) involve a hero going through a cave or tunnel or a dangerous foreign land. The meaning of these myths is that the hero goes through a process of transformation. He must shed the present self-image and be reborn as a new person. Begging may be this process. The beggar may become more tolerant and wiser than the people who pass him on the bridge. He may become a stronger person in anything he chooses to do.

  9. I will summarise the way I think it goes now after reading the above:

    1. You get a visa-exempt stamp for 30 days on your first arrival.

    2. When this is up, you go across a border to a Thai consulate to get a 60-day tourist visa.

    3. You can extend this in Thailand at an immigration office for 30 days for 1,900 Baht.

    4. You can then make 3 30-days visa-exempt runs to a non-consulate border.

The actual start of your 6-month period is after you get the first 2-month tourist visa. For most people first entering Bkk from their home countries by air, this will be the 30-day visa exempt.

If you hate immigration offices, then you can just pass up the visit to the office in-country to extend the tourist visa. This way, you are making a trip to a consulate in a neighboring country every 5 months.

I prefer this because having to make the trip prevents you from getting rusty, and keeps you updated with the situation at the neighboring country.

  10. I have traveled through steep mountains a number of times with these buses and observed what the crew is doing. During steep mountain trips they have stopped the bus for a while to let the brakes cool down. They are checking the levels of brake fluid etc.

As I understand when there is a leak the brake fluid that is under pressure can become flamable at that leaking point. So here is the situation. Overheated because of the mountain road, a leak up front with the brake fluid and resulting fire. Then it spread rapidly in the front area of the bus where the DOOR is located.

That day I bet was very hot and at the start of the hot season when all potential heat problems will be tested.

If only they had been able to break the window early on and gotten out.

Must have been hel_l on earth.

the route from chiang mai to Pai and mae sot go over mountains, as i recall. i do not remember the busses and vans stopping, except at the rest stops for food and bathroom breaks.

On some busses they include a small hammer in a glass case. One is supposed to break the window in case of emergency then push the glass out.

It might be wise always to bring along a good-sized hammer on a bus trip.

  11. This is a point that a lot of us falangs fail to realise. Thai people (& all asian people with tonal & inflection based languages) in general are extremely perceptive, they can read body language & facial expresions much better than a lot of us "boardroom warriors". However, they do have some trouble with indesicive foreigners, often reading intentions incorrectly.

    Soundman.

This sounds like reverse racism, as if to say that thais are perceptive while other races are not. As if thais can read body language and facial expressions but other races cannot.

Could it be that thais are just as stupid, greedy, and insensitive as the rest of us, and that some of them are racist?

    sarpesius

  12. I have found that the Bangkok itself is the unfriendliest town.

The worst businesses upcountry are run by Bangkok Thais who come up to rip off the tourists. Lonely Planet makes a remark about this.

Patpong is a rat hole, with really dangerous pimp-bouncer-enforcer criminals, and the girls are just as bad.

The "antique" shops on sukhumvit will show you something made last week with new paint still on it and tell you it's "very old."

The restaurants and bars on Khao San rd. are mercenary and mediocre.

The tuk-tuk drivers will try to raise the fare on you when you are in the midst the journey. Some of taxi meters are rigged.

If you get stuck out by Victory monument, where so many English schools are, no thai, including the bus drivers, will help you get on the right bus to get back to banglamphu. So you wind up taking a cab which wipes out wages.

  13. All groups, especially ethnic ones, learn by necessity to defend themselves against prejudice and harassment and oppression.

When we hear of anti-foreign sentiment in thailand, we are usually talking about persecution of white people (although other ethnic and racial groups may also experience it).

for example -- I do not think "anti-foreign" sentiment means anti-chinese at this point in thai history, although it may have a few decades ago.

To defend ourselves against harassment, we can increase our solidarity.

This means forming tighter social organizations in thailand that maintain more frequent and more focused communication about trends and dangers. Forums like tv represent an important element in that process.

If new laws are passed that endanger us, we can take appropriate action.

Such a group can make contacts within the police, politicians and local business and religious leaders. There are always ways to negotiate to reach settlements if problems arise. There will often be some people in any power center with whom we can deal, although of course there will be other who just hate white people.

"Gifts" placed in the right hands can be used to protect our interests. For example -- if a certain policeman or a certain police station seems to be harassing whites, making a gift to the right person at the right level might have those officials transferred to the south.

In this case, the first thing to do is identify the bad guys and then find out who our friends are within a specific community.

Solidarity and concerted action also means contacting our embassies with mass appeals. Politicians within our home countries can be alerted to persecution. Such action will be less effective and will take more time but may affect trade and immigration treaties in the future.

If there is physical harassment of members of our community within a specific town or province, there are usually specific individuals who are doing it. These individuals can be found out.

Caucasians have a knack for being able to use technology. Technology can be used for surveillance and for the neutralization of hostile elements. Sun Tsu says the first step toward victory is good intelligence.

There are other things that can be done for the long range.

These include setting up a fund to take care of half-thai, half-white children, to make sure they are not mistreated because of their racial mix. Scholarship funds can be set up.

Mentors can be established if the father or another person is not available. Such mentors would watch over thai-white children to protect them and shepherd them through schooling and career choice.

This is not a white racist, white power blah blah. Nor is it meant to disparage or leave out other groups. It is a recognition of the reality that all groups can be victims of racism and that, at any time in any place, defensive and protective measures can work.

    Thieving Ladyboy Released Uncharged.

    A kind-hearted Korean tourist ....

They chased the ladyboy and made a citizens arrest. Police from Soi 9 station were called and questioned the ladyboy who tearfully confessed to the theft but claimed she needed the money to send to her family up-country.

The Korean took pity on the ladyboy and decided not to press charges, ....

It is surprising the Korean did not beat the ladyboy up. Koreans do that for sport.

  15. There are several types of services, 4 per day (well most days). Express is a sit up train with several classes but only stops at the major centres, try to get a seat in one of the 'non propelling' cars as the noisy motor under your feet is not pleasent. The sit up and sleeper train (one engine at the front) stops almost everywhere. ....

This is a bit OT, but how do you tell which is a train car with a motor under it?

  16. ....

As far as i was aware, a foreigner cannot own a Sole Propreietorship.

I understand what you are trying to do here, but i think you are over simplifying everything dramatically.

Firstly, i gather (though i may be wrong) that you will be working in this establishment. You aint gonna get a work permit with that company setup, even if you could overcome the problem i point out above.

Secondly, i suggest you read as much as possible (there are a couple good publications that you can pick up in Kinokuniya or Asia Books) relating to doing business in Thailand. It sounds like you have no idea about taxation etc. and those books will be invaluable in guiding you through the quagmire.

Like i said, i do understand your goal, but get your head in those books, and read about company structures, taxation requirements (your company must be VAT registered for you to be allowed a work permit). It will be time very well spent.

In this thread, another poster, chang paarp, said there are obstacles to setting up a sole proprietorship.

But he or she did not say it was not legal, and I was assuming that there are unwritten rules operating here.

My reading of the amity treaty is that an american can set up a sole proprietorship.

I have dialogued with sunbelt and other posters on other threads regarding these matters, and no one has denied that a sole proprietorship is possible.

I was given the title of one book, Start Up and Stay Up in Thailand.

As you can see, there are differing opinions on these regulations. Sunbelt indicates that a work permit is possible with a sole proprietorship.

We also note, from a businessperson's poll that just recently out, that Thailand is considered one of the most corrupt countries for business in Asia. This means that the only thing to do is to actually see what the government officials says.

However informative this current discussion is, this thread was originally about how to approach a property or business owner for rental.

    sarpesius

  17. As a foreigner you may find there are obstacles in the way of being a sole proprietor in Thailand. You may be forced to go the limited company route, the good news if you are a US citizen you can own the business 100% if it is registered under the Amnity treaty.

The Limited Liability Company, if that is what you are referring to, will soon require a minimum capitalization of 3 million baht, while a sole proprietorship, by my current figuring, would cost about 400,000 Baht for the first year.

What problems are you referring to regarding a foreigner starting a sole proprietorship?
