  1. Graham- We are in a near identical situation and are slightly nervous about conscription. My son has done army cadets since he was 14 and we were told by the local amphur in Maha Sarakham that if he has lots of pictures of him in his platoon and has a letter from the Army then he would not need to join the Thai army. I'm not convinced by this advice but we live in hope. If the worst happens I will have to make a donation to the "Generals pension fund" [emoji6]

  2. The shops are just "fronts" for factories for tourists. Unfortunately; its not like Jermyn Street in London. The quality of stitching, fabric, fit and quality control is variable most of the time. I'm sure there are some really good individual tailors that produce " in house" but they are few and far apart. I'm sure someone living here will be able to direct you to one.

  3. Distant relatives of my wife took life cover out for their dying son. Not knowing this. We took him to hospital and paid for treatment that was working. When we left Thailand to return to the uk we phoned the family to check on his progress. After one month he was dead. We later discovered that they had stopped him going for pre paid treatment that we had organised and binned his medication as soon as we left. The poor guy died one month after we left Thailand. He was a lovely bloke. I was so sad and the wife was livid. I couldn't believe it was possible to take life cover out on a different person.

It was definitely an eye opener to the darker side of Thailand

  4. I had the same experience once before and had my wife and two kids in the taxi. After realising he was really tired I told my wife to get him to stop at a large petrol station and forced him to drink a couple of M50s. After another 20 minutes I could still see he wasn't in good shape so I got him to stop.

I then persuaded the wife to tell him that I was not happy and that I should drive and he can navigate. I gave him lots of smiles to save face and told him that he was working too hard. Deep down I was quite angry but I felt safer driving myself and the family then having Nigel Mansell on crack driving us.

Luckily I've only had this experience once in 18 years.

    I don't believe you

No taxi driver will let you drive his cab

I reckon it wasn't him asleep but you & your story is a dream

  6. I was pick-pocketed in Indonesia 20+ years ago at a songtaew-type bus station. 3 man team:

    The bumper

    The pick

    The hand-off

Very slick. They got cash, travelers checks, and credit cards but not my passport, other travelers checks and (then) paper airline ticket. The credit cards were canceled and replaced and the travelers checks refunded at AmEx in Jakarta as I had the numbers. Cash obviously gone,

BTW there are razor-blade artists out there who can slice just about anything without your knowing it including a pocket, fanny-pack or a belt loop.

I bought a thing called pacsafe that is designed to stop the razor blade gangs
  7. Is it really cheaper to live in canada? i can't really believe that. Can you buy a detached house for $100,000? My costs living here in LoS are far below what i would pay in the UK.

Can't say about Canada but in the US, yes. LINK

In the UK that wouldn't even buy you an outside toilet. Minimum in London @$700,000 in some Muslim ghetto.

Your correct. I just had a house valued and the agent said I could sell the garage (that is separate from the house) for £25000
  8. ^^^^ why so you think it is only the uneducated/ non professionals that need to come on here and ask?

Yes. Only a complete fool would seek advice about such an important decision from a collection of other complete fools.

Even from those like myself who have lived here for 30 plus years and have as many if not more qualifications than the op and whose budget at times was well in excess of 200k.

Or those who have life experiences of thailand..many on here..

It will be only one source of information.

Your reply was funny..so I am assuming it was abit tongue in cheek.

No, my reply was completely serious. The fact that you've felt the need to discuss your qualifications and budget on an anonymous forum only strengthens my opinion.

No way would a UK solicitor ask if an annual budget of 75K USD is sufficient to "retire in Thailand with a fairly high standard of living".

Sorry boys and girls, wealthy solicitors just don't ask these questions.

Well your wrong there...... My friend is a Solicitor who is thinking of retirement has lots of assets/money and has asked me questions like this.
  9. There are some good days in monsoon season on the Eastern Seaboard in Rayong Mae Ramphung area, sometimes Koh Chang White Sand beach in June/July. Then from May-November the Andaman coast and Phuket....In October you can hit Chumphon and Kanom area as well...Eastern Seaboard can get 4 ft waves on the best days and Andaman coast its more regular and can get to head high waves....Its' not Bali or Hawaaii but you can Surf in Thailand and Malaysia as well.

I have surfed in Phuket now for more than 4 years. In the monsoon you can get 4 metre (12 foot) days. And yes if you know where to go you can also get barelled.

I've learnt something new today, didn't realise you could surf in Thailand
  10. I had an hour chat with one local lawyer, he then wrote two letters for me, had two telephone calls to others, one more subsequent consultation and he charged me zero! absolutely nothing, said he was glad to help and no charge,

I bought him a good bottle of whiskey for a thank you.

funny you say that but I had a similar experience in Maha Sarakham about 8 years ago. I was stunned by this as my step father was a London solicitor and would never do anything for free. I did the same and gave him a bottle of Johnny black as a thank you.
  11. Maybe it's just me......

I did not pay a dowry

I did not remodel the in laws house

I did not buy them a vehicle

    And....I won't either!

I am not a lottery ticket and I am not a bank...Sorry, marrying me was not a career move!

I make my money....They can do the same!

Some people never get it......And then they spend countless hours complaining about how they lost it all to a Thai woman....If you're really that foolish, you deserve to be taken for a ride!

I like to help family whether in the UK or Thailand. This year my best friend (in the UK) fell on hard times and I helped him out financially. I am know ones idiot, and I would not be destitute just because I built the in laws a house, paid for a cancer operation for an uncle or helped my wife's niece through school by paying for English lessons. My family and friends are important to me and I like to help out if I can. I am not "showing off" but I have just hit 40 and have paid for my house in the UK, have a significant property portfolio and investments in the UK and abroad and drive a nice car. I understand it if people can not do this, but do not understand the aggressive stance in some people.

    Mr Dudley I'm not

but do not understand the aggressive stance in some people.

Let me explain if to you.

    Its called, taking the piss.

To help you understand a bit better, I can afford to do this but dont.

Thankfully I am a farang so dont need to worry about face or status, too be perfectly frank I dont even care what they think of me.

As for the local fishwives and gossips at the local shops and markets, I really dont give a toss about you lot either, or your BS stories about your farang SIL who paid 2 million baht sin sot and sends you 75k baht per month.

As my wife says to me, she has two hands and can work, they can do the same.

No bullshit stories from me pal.

    Mr Dudley I'm not

Wasnt aimed at you, for the record I believe you.

Can only assume poor sentence structure on my part, was aimed at the local fishwives and gossips with their BS stories.

Must admit these days I just nod my head and say, lor.

PS, who or what is Mr Dudley?

A comedy in the UK called little Britain stars a thai women and her boyfriend is mr Dudley
