  1. Wow what a bunch of cheapskates in here! Get an accountant to do the math its just a few percent up as it goes by region and job type and etc... Its called cost of living increase kinda self explanatory. and we will all have to wait and see if it really gets fully implemented.

I am not affected as i pay way over minimum and try to keep trade as fair as possible. If everyone shared just a bit there is more than enough for all. And readigbob penalizing the caddy 40 baht because you don't like a 50 baht fee increase from the course that's just mean.

  2. 5. Oh for the last few days hours and hours of moaning about people not getting help from their government or an airline! You are from (insert country) you came by choice on a holiday to Thailand, a volcano in Iceland blew it's top, now you expect someone to take care of you? It is no one's fault, stuff happens. All this whining about paying taxes, try travel insurance? And guaranteed if the planes did fly and one crashed the moaning would be "why didn't the government take care of us!" Deal with it, go to the beach for the extra days and have a great story to tell when you get back.

  6. Shopped in Duty Free in PP last week and the prices were about the same as in town, they had more prestige label drinks and smokes, prices reflect higher quality ie-J. Walker Bleu/Green ... Just easier to get it at the airport and hand carry. PS -the smokes do not have ugly pics on them! But limited selection.

  7. A good fruit cake is dense, rich, filled with fruits and nuts. Those in the pic look like they have alot of cake and a bit of "candied" neon colored fruit? Go online get a recipe start it at the end of this month and enjoy a thing of beauty at the holidays! make sure to douse it regularly with alcohol of your choice! I do mine in the fridge too as not sure about the warm temps here.

  8. So who actually owns this lavender place? Thai's or farang? Just curious as if Thia's then would think that local howling would be kept to a minimum?

And my 2 pennies, can not imagine such a big place being full all the time with gay guys unless some kind of sex business or sauna was attached to it.

  9. Oh Boo Hoo you had something that you knew not to take on a plane taken away from you! It is done for security.

We all have had this experience and the old "I have kids" thing...contrary to popular opinion does not give you free reign to do as you like on an airplane!

Some choice banter of passengers with brats "We need upgrade for more room"

"We have to sit all together, can not be across from each other on the aisle"

"What do you mean my unpaid brat does not get a 30KG baggage allowance?"

Your kids are annoying to everyone else on the plane, and you do not pay for their tickets.

  10. About 30% of the time the Immi officer says something nice to me along those lines. And I have had one guy 3-4 times in the past few months and he chats with me each time.

As for waiting times they are dramatically down in the last 8 months, at least 3 times have walked straight up to the officer. I will not be flying these next fewmonths by choice so think waiting times will be even shorter.

  11. My story.

    Day 1

Arrived Embassy at 9.25 got number 301 Ouch! Waited forever all through the process at 11.45! Ouch! 1/2 of the population of the Phillipines was in line with me, with a smattering of the usually crusty characters, and one drunk British guy-who went on and on to anyone who would listen about "The injustice of the visa process, conspiracy theories, etc..." I looked for the mysterious low number sellers but turned up none. Met another guy who was looking for the same but who had also come up empty handed. Where do they hang out? The second waiting was made painfully slow by every other applicant rushing the window asking if the visa was free or not, and then moaning about why theirs was not...As it was free they just put a little stamp on the number ticket.

    Day 2

Arrived at 1.30 got number 169 Ouch! Got my 2x visa (free) at 3.40 Ouch! Not really sure what the delay was, only 2 people working maybe. taxi to border. Waited 30 minutes at Lao Immigration. Waited 40 minutes at Thai Immigration! Ouch! Got to Non Khai train station at about 5.40. It was quite a long day. I was originally scheduled for a flight at Udon but thankfully they had changed it to later because of weather and I decided just to take the train back instead! I never would have made the flight.

But have to say that this was the longest trip I have ever had to endure...I chalked it up just to bad luck and bad timing. The new system from a straw poll that I conducted with fellow waiters came up with 50% saying the new system was a little faster, and 50% saying it was the same as before. I read other posts and people seem to fly through the whole thing...I sure hope that I am one of those people next time!

  12. I have just moved into a new jumbo townhouse and have some rooms for short term rent. Room one B$4200 is pretty and basically furnished, with a small terrace attached. The second B$3000 is smaller and empty.

The house is done very simply and has been dubbed "The Zen Den". There is a huge kitchen fully outfitted. TV room with plasma. Several outdoor areas for sitting or tanning. The main dining room has 5 meter ceilings. 2 bathrooms. Internet and TRUE cable.

    Available mid to late June.

Prefer women or gay guys. No smokers. Small quiet dogs OK. Eco-minded a definite plus.

PROS-short term, very quiet, easy going place, ez to Silom, close to BRT (open soon)

CONS-fan rooms, no partying, no smoking, small bathrooms

    Location-Near BANGKOK GARDEN/Narathiwats Soi 24/Sathupradit Soi 15

PM for more information, leave ur phone and I will get back to you. :)

  13. Elite does buy, but they only want new and current titles. I had the same the same idea once. But I did not want to drag them all over only to be told no...and drag them home. I found out that you can donate them to the Neilson Hayes Library. They keep what they need for the shelves, the rest are sold at book sales to benefit the library. Always good to give something back.

  14. I get bored in BKK too. It is kinda dull when you take out anything that involves going to the bars. Culturally there is not much to do here. I too am a big city dweller from USA. It is just different here. I think the thing that I miss most is just walking about "discovering" new things. It can be done here too but the heat and air quality make it kind of a chore.

There used to be a poetry slam called bangkokpoetry.com, but the site is closed down. Anyone know what happened to that group?

Do check out the Neilson Hayes library it is a good resource. As for the cooking classes the 5-star ones are dull, been there done that. But there are several excellent ones around, try Bai-Pai Cooking school for a nice day of culinary lessons, and very reasonable.

I think what I miss is dining clubs and museums. I tried to start a dining club here once, it died a miserable death. Maybe I will start a museum? Speaking of Jim Thompson House is great for a visit and they have some random things going on.
