  1. True, now that you mention it - when I decline food or drink I actually do use ไม่เป็นไรครับ rather than ไม่เอาครับ ...

It's not what my Thai teachers taught me, rather it's emulation of what many Thais around me tend to do.

Maybe you would be kind enough to also include the english phonetic spelling for those of us who are still attempting to learn thai text. :D

Pardon me, what does mai pen rai means?

By the way, how do you say sorry ?

or Excuse me, if someone blocking your way?

'mai pen rai' means ' it is of no matter, it is nothing, don't mention it, no trouble, and, no worries (if you are Aussie)'

The ever so formal 'ko tang noi' means 'make way please' in a jammed up situation pavement, bus etc, it really works when 'ko tort' hasn't.

now, "ko tort" or "khar tot"? I'm confused :)

  3. I don't think you need to make it that complicated.

If you print out the address of the hotel in Thai and hand it to the people at the official public taxi queue at the airport, they'll get you where you want to go.

    โรงแรม ไอ-เรสซิเดนซ์ (I-Residence)

    67 ถนนนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ซอย 3, สีลม, บางรัก, กรุงเทพฯ 10500

Save the number for the hotel (or any Thai friend you have in Bangkok who speaks English or your native language) in your mobile phone.

If for some reason you should still run into problems, call them on your mobile, hand over your phone to the taxi driver so they can explain to him where the hotel is.

I have PM'ed you the number of the hotel as it attracts spam bots if I post it in the public forum.

kap-khoon-khrap... I'll print that out immediately

  4. Hi,

    Need another help here.

My friend complained to me that most taxi driver do not know where Chong-NonSi BTS station is.

I want to get from Survanabhumi Airport to REsidence I hotel.

I got it from Google map, the direction is as follow:-

Route31 BKK-Chonburi New line toll way

    National Highway no.7

    2md state Expressway

    Chalem Maha Nakhon Expressway

    Thanon Rama IV

    Sathon Tai

    Soi Phiphat

    Sathon 6

    Phiphat 1

    Narathiwat Ratchanakharin 3

Now, how do I translate all these in Thai so the driver knows the direction?

    thanks in advance.

  5. Can't find Thai food restaurant in BKK? You must joking!

Yes, I can;t believe it. But everytime I went to BKK, I can't seem to find a decent priced Authentic Thai food restaurant. Five times I've been to BKK, five times I've ate at the same restaurant Thamnanthai near Nana BTS.

Can anyone recommend some good restaurant that serves authentic Thai food without chopping the customer like a carrot :)

    Kap khoon khrap

  6. personally I avoid tuk tuk taxis like the plague, taxis are usually cheaper and safer.

I'm with you on that one. They're not cheaper, except for very short distances (basically walking distance), and you're paying to sit in traffic and simultaneously breath the exhaust of the cars surrounding you and roast in its heat. Not a fan...

[Edit: I'd add that they are sometimes more convenient because they behave a bit more like motorcycles in that they flout traffic laws more than taxis can get away with. So you have to know where and when to use them effectively. In general, though, me no like.]

Oh... I thought "prod sap" meant something like "attention".... thanks for the explanation.

I do agree that tuk tuk is not safe and not cheap either... but for a tourist like me, it's exciting to take the thrill once a while :)

  7. Hello all,

    7. turn right in front

    8. turn left in front

In addition to that, 220baht is translated as "song roi song sip bhat" , am I right?

    Kap khoon khrap :)

    2. leo sai

    3. tarong bai

    4. jot

    5. jot khang naa

  9. Sawadee,

I search through a few online eng-thai dictionary.... when speaking about hundred, some mentioned "raawy" (eg. two-hundred -> saawng raawy), and some dictionary translate as "roi" (eg. two hundred -> saawng roi)

So, I wonder which is the correct term?

    thanks all :o

  10. Sawasdee

May I know is there any taxi River along Chao Phraya that I can ride to enjoy the evening scenary of the river? Usually those river cruise that we book from tour agent is very expensive, so I would like to avoid them and perhaps I can go directly to the river side to catch a ride on a ny river boat, if any.

    Thanks for any advise :o

  11. [May I know which is the fastest route to take from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Makkasan Road and vice versa?}

Fastest is a relatove thing in Thaild, as you seem to be so overworried: fasest in time, or shortest in distance? dont ind paying the odd extra baht for the tolls?

IF you find the odd taxidriver who dont seems to know: MOTORway, dirct from airport, pass toll (25bt) at Srinakarin, stay on motorway on top of Ram IX, get off near Fortune town (before next toll), get down, then his choice depending on time of day; via Asoke (=jams in the peaks), then Phetburi Rd, OR down, Din Daeng rd, then ileft into/via the Indira hotel.

next year that fancy new railway will run, direct to makkasan: admire the giant stuctrue just being erected for it!

    Kawp khun khrap khun asanee,

yes, in my previous visit to BKK I was staying at Eastin Hotel , in front of Makkasan railway station, all I can see from my hotel room is the gigantic pillar for the soon coming airport link railway :o

  12. Kawp Khun khrap khun bambina..... most taxi driver have not heard of the hotel before.... :o ... that's why I have to said next to DMa

    The address is:-

1091/343 New Petchburi Road, Makkasan, Opposite Makkasan Railway Station, next to D'Ma Hotel.

    โรงแรมอิสติน 1091/343 ถ.เพชรบุรีตัดใหม่ มักกะสัน (ตรงข้ามสถานีรถไฟมักกะสัน) ติดกับโรงแรมเดมา พาวิเลียน

I think it's not necessary to mention about the red phrases

  13. Oh, I learnt a new trick here :o

There are 6 of us, so hopefully can get a MPV cab from the departure hall. But is it legal ? I mean will there be any security guard that stop illegal boarding of cab from non desinated area?

I think it is technically prohibited ('illegal' might be a bit strong), but the security guards have never said a thing to me or the taxis I've used from there. If a taxi is waiting there for a long time after dropping someone off, the guards may come and tell them to move along. But with the number of passengers departing, it's never a problem to find one that's just dropped someone off and hop in immediately. Just be sure the driver will use the meter and ignore any that try to give you a fixed price.

Perhaps if you arrived in the middle of the night you might need to wait, and thus going down to level 1, and paying the 50 baht extra, might be a bit quicker. At any other times I've found Level 4 to be the fastest. One word of warning though, if you don't know where you're going and it's not a common destination and you can't explain where you want to go to the taxi driver, you could have a bit of a problem. In that case you're better off going to Level 1 and tell the attendant there where you're going so they can write it down in Thai to give to your driver.

Thanks Soju for the advice :D

  14. If I were you, I'd print out the address BambinA posted to be on the safe side.

First try your luck with pronouncing the transcribed version, but I am not convinced the taxi driver will understand you (remember a frenetically nodding head does not necessarily mean 'I have understood everything you said and will take you to the right address'...) :o

If you show him the note with written Thai though, he will understand, so provided he knows the way, you will get to the right address.

    Hey Guys,

I already printed out the text... :D

One more translation needed..... I will be staying in Eastin Hotel, and during my previous trip, most of the taxi/tuk tuk driver does not know where it is, even I told them Makkasan railway station. Ended up I have to visually direct them, and I am still not good at recognising BKK road.

    The address is:-

1091/343 New Petchburi Road, Makkasan, Opposite Makkasan Railway Station, next to D'Ma Hotel.

    Kawp Khun Krap :D

  15. I normally go up to the Departures, Level 4, and catch a cab there dropping someone off. You'll be able to save the 50 baht fee, and more importantly save time due to not having to wait in any queues. This has worked beautifully for me since Suvarnabhumi opened, but last week for the first time I had to ask multiple cabs before finding one to use the meter. Always before they were more than happy to use the meter straight away. I arrived at a very busy time, so perhaps that had something to do with it. But still it took no more than 2 or 3 minutes to find a driver willing to use the meter.
