  1. Anyone heard about the Candadian supposedly shot this morning or yesterday at the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi, Chiang Mai? Apparently in a coma...

Can't seem to start this as a new topic

    Canadian professor shot in Thailand

    Canwest News Service

    Wednesday, February 13, 2008

A university professor from Ontario remains in a coma after being shot in Thailand Wednesday morning.

The man, 50, is in the country on vacation with his wife, according to CBC reports.

He is in hospital about 700 kilometres north of Bangkok in Chiang Mai.

The couple were in an open vehicle when the man - believed to be from Kitchener - slumped over in his seat.

Thai police said the shooting was not intentional, but have not made any arrests related to the shooting. They did, however, rule out that the shot came from inside the vehicle.

Wednesday's shooting is the fourth time a Canadian was shot in Thailand this year.

Canadian oil worker Dale Henry of Victoria, B.C. was killed at his home in the country earlier this month.

Three people are in custody for his killing, including Henry's wife, her lover and a suspected contract killer.

Calgary's Leo John Del Pinto was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer in January. Del Pinto's friend, Carly Reisig, was also shot in the incident, but survived.

  2. Yes, it would be a story of a world where harm minimisation is what's most important. Governments would cease to lie about substances, instead choosing to educate the public. Everyone would be free to use if they do not harm anyone but themselves.

But does it work this way? A friend of mine who has been clean for years recently started using heroin and cocaine again and is moving around from place to place downtown. This time she has her 6 yr. old daughter with her who is supposed to be going to school. She was in school for a couple of weeks and now is out again, the social services has been phoning here trying to track them down. My friend is a native woman who was apprehended from her own parents and adopted out to a white family when she was 3 or 4. Don't know what will happen to her daughter now, the girl's father molested her when she was younger and is not allowed to see her now by court order.

  3. I am planning to go to Thailand (my third trip in the last year, but frst alone) to look over the spa industry. How safe is this for me to do? I am almost 50 years old (a young 50 though) I have been to most visted destinations around the country. This time I believe I am going to focus on Bangkok.  I dont plan on letting people know (other than this friend) that I am traveling alone. Can anyone make suggestions where I can stay (possibly a serviced apt.) which will be safe? Also, where should I not venture....and any other tid bits you can share with me . thanks a bunch....

Hi - I was there with my daughter for over a year, we taught english for rajaphat univeristy for awhile. In Bangkok we stayed at the Atlanta Hotel - nice old retro hotel - http://theatlantahotel.bizland.com/ (has a nice pool too) - or if it was full the Raja Hotel up the street. We were out late to the night market with the band near Sala Daeng and so on and never had any problems. I think there are expat women's groups in Bangkok you could attend.

  4. I think taking your kids out of one culture and letting them see another culture is a great idea. My daughters have been al over the world and make friends easily now because of this.

I think it is total BS to worry about kids or think because she is 14 she needs to be pampered. Folks life in general sucks because you DECIDE it sucks, not that it actually does.

    I vote for the move

Yes me too. My daughter is back in school here in Canada and on the honour roll again but I don't like the things the kids learn about our culture here. The most important thing seems to be what kind of clothes you wear. I didn't want to come back here but ran out of money. Right now I am paying into my pension for the 14 months I was off work and planning on taking early retirement.

  5. By way of Poipet / Aranyaprathet.

    How's the road?

What's up with the Khao San Road "scam" buses?

I wouldn't even bother taking this route - my daughters and I did it this way. First we stayed overnight in a Khao San Rd. guesthouse and got about 2 hrs. sleep due to all the drunks fighting below in the poolroom. We left about 6 am and then the bus stopped at a restaurant near the border for about 3 hrs. supposedly so they could get visas for those who didn't already have them. The roads were a nightmare once we crossed into Cambodia and then they make sure they get there late and take you to an overpriced guesthouse. We declined to stay at this one and walked around with the guys from this guesthouse following us for about an hr. until we finally went with another guy to see his guesthouse which actually turned out to be nice and reasonably priced. Might be better to spend a bit more and fly.

  6. How about KL and Singapore accomodations?  Any thoughts?  Like to spend about $20 US per night and I'd like to avoid the hostel-scene if possible :o

    moon

We stayed at Pondok Lodge - http://www.pondoklodge.com/ - its in a good location right in Bukit Bintang. Also stayed in the Kameleon Travellers Lodge near the bus station downtown, not too bad - (near China Town), 35, Jalan Pudu Lama

Kuala Lumpur Tel - 603 20707770 Email - [email protected] Beware of places like the Travellers Backpackers Inn, Wheelers Guesthouse - all hostels downtown, terrible dumps!

  7. Your daughter did not ask to be born, you made that decision, and you cannot abdicate responsibility for her education and future now simply because you feel you have had enough hardship in life and it’s time to make a change.

I make no apologies for repeating my original assertion, your attitude is selfish and immature, no ones life comes with a guarantee of any sort, however we must all accept responsibility for our own actions and decisions – particularly when they affect those who are unable, or too young, to make their own.

    Patrick

Well many people think it is an incredible opportunity for a kid to see another way of life and another culture. Our culture in N. America is certainly not the greatest. It is a terrible thing for women not to put their kids first but men do it all the time, for example I am owed $26,000.00 in child support. If my kids ever went to university they would have to take heavy duty student loans. And actually I have worked as hard as I could - harder really, I have some heart condition now from working shiftwork jobs 7 days a week for years. My body made the decision for me, no use working yourself to death for others.

  8. Hoping someone out there can help me.....

Well I just spent 14 months there with my 14 yr. old daughter. She was on correspondence school the whole time, I don't know where you are from but we are from Canada and it doesn't cost anything. Was a bit of a hassle getting her to do the homework and mailing it in all the time but there are some courses that could have been done by e-mail. After the 14 months we came back to Canada as I still have one good job here (used to have two but lost the 2nd one due to coming back late - only had one year off). Now I am trying to decide whether to take early retirement and move there. I wouldn't listen to people who say you are selfish, there are alot of positive aspects of Asian culture when you compare it to our self centred one. The way kids are raised here makes me shake my head in despair. My daughter did well in all her courses but was on the honour roll before we came to Thailand and always did well in school.

I am a single parent and have worked 7 days a week at two jobs to attempt to live a reasonable life here in Canada but truthfully it did not work out that well. My kids were running wild because I was never home. My older girl got sick of watching her younger sister and would take off with her friends all the time. Yet with one job I would not have been able to pay the bills. I don't know what the answer is myself, but everyone should have choices besides working two shiftwork jobs just to be able to raise their kids and pay the bills.

  9. it seems she may have died in Goa in 2002. Very sad, if true. Anyone know for sure?

  10. Chantana House is not too bad, it is new and fairly central, has a/c for 500 a night; 12/22 Narasuan Sai 1 Rd. 035-323200 cel 098-850257. It is fairly quiet unlike many guesthouses in Ayutthaya (lived in Ayutthaya for 6 months). The Ban Kru Pa in the Lonely Planet book is near a main road and very noisy as is the Sherwood. Some friends of ours manage an apt. building and rent apts. with a/c for 300 bhat a night, they are over by Rajitanee Hospital (take the No. 5 bus) their # is 035-335656 or cel 094-528278.

  11. We flew over to Bali with Air Asia in July from Johor Bahru to Jakarta and also went over to Tioman Island from Mersing in the south of Malaysia. We also stayed at a guesthouse in Mersing then and upon our return from Bali before our second trip (can only get 30 day visa to Bali now). Stayed there another time after our trip to Borneo. One of the long term employees of this guesthouse (who is 37) drinks and began to bother my 14 yr. old daughter, trying to get her to drink alcohol with him and one time put his hand on her knee. I complained to the owner with no results - he would tell us to ignore him for example. Finally after he was drunk and chased my daughter into our bungalow we put in a police report with the help of the owner's brother who is sick of this employee and all the trouble he has caused. The police arrested him and brought him to the station and had my daughter explain to him that it scared her when he chased her. They told us they would keep him for 14 days but the next morning the police came out to the guesthouse and asked some lkong term residents (who I believe are friends of the owners and this employees) questions and then released the guy that afternoon. Of course after that the owner and his friends harassed us and we left. We did put in complaints in kuala lumpur re this. We have been in Asia for over a year now and my daughter has never been bothered like this before, sometimes in Thailand guys might say things like "hello, beautiful" etc. but have never had anything like this happen before.

  12. We were going to go back to Canada for awhile at the end of this month but now I need some tests at the hospital and also don't really want to go back yet. My 14 yr. old daughter is going berserk at the thought of missing Halloween. I think I read somewhere that they celebrate it to some degree in Pattaya, anyone know if this is true?

  13. I used Estee Lauder for years but a few years ago started using L'Oreal Plenitude Night Cream while still using the face softener stuff from Estee Lauder. Found Estee Lauder to be quite a bit more expensive in Asia tho so have stopped using it for now. Seems to me that the L'Oreal stuff is just as good anyway.

  14. Thanks for the answers. The last time we were in Thailand (June) we were in Trat near the Cambodian border and it rained every day mostly all day for over a week. Since then we have been in Bali and Malaysia; right now we are in Mersing near Johor Bharu and it is still hot and sunny.l

  15. I am not here permanently yet; came over to Thailand for a year to check out how it would be to work and live here. In Canada I had two jobs - one graveyard shift one and one afternoon shift one and was usually working seven days a week. After years of this I couldn't do it anymore, my kids never saw me and the older girl got sick of watching her sister while I worked all the time and took off. So I sold my house and used the $ to come here and do volunteer work teaching english with my younger girl. So far we have been in Thailand 8 months and love it. It is cheap, beautiful, the people here are friendly, haven't really had any problems at all. Right now we are doing some travelling as I am supposed to go back to work Nov. 1st at my jobs. Truthfully I dread going back to the hours I have to work to survive, support my daughter and pay a student loan. I have a union job where I can pay in my pension for the year I was off, work for awhile and take early retirement. Once I get my pension sorted out and have it up to an amount I figure I can live on I intend to come back! :o:D

  16. Ferry over to Belawan/Medan was 4 hrs. and then about 1/2 hr. into Medan. From Lake Toba (Parapat) I believe it was 4 hrs. by minibus, big tourist buses might be faster. Out in Ambarita (5 kms. from Tuk Tuk) there is a swanky hotel called Sanggam Resort Hotel with rooms starting at 100,000 rp according to my book.

  17. If anyone is going down to Penang on a visa run you can go over to Medan Sumatra by ferry and take a bus up to Lake Toba. We stayed at the Hotel Carolina in Tuk Tuk for 16,500 rupiah a night (75 baht) in a large bungalow with two beds, bathroom, and table and chairs. We did not need a fan in the bungalow and kept the windows closed, this was in April. The hotel is great with a large screen tv, nice restaurant, lawn chairs by the lake etc. You can swim in the lake and check out the great scenery, you can take the ferry from Parapat over to Tomock also. Great break from the summer heat.
