Thanks Paul, but it looks like they sell bulbs, I am looking for light fittings before buying bulbs. I can get bulbs locally althoiugh not the narrow Beam I prefer for lighting photographs..

Som Peng market?, hmm , not sure. what I am looking for is a fairly new and relatively expensive fitting, I doubt whether that market would have what pecialist lighting shops only have in limited variety.

Reall what I am looking for is a recommendation for a hih quality light fitting shop in BKK.

  2. I am looking for the best shop selling LED lighting in BKK

I am looking for small LED based spotlights to light up photographs on my wall. I used in the past incandescent spotlights, they produce a lot of heat and are big.

I have also used Quartz halogen spots, and preferred the 20 watt bulbs with narrow angle, such as 10 degrees, focussing on the image and not producing a lot of heat.

But now I want to switch to LED lihting. I currently have 30 downlighter in my place, each with a 50 Watt halogen, left by the previous owner. It produces 1500 Wat of heat, and uses up power as well as expensive air conditioning to cool it down again.

Then i found LED, almost no heat, ver low power consumption.

I live in Sattahip, checked all pattaya shops, very poor selection there.

What is the best shop to find these in BKK?

  3. I print my own photographs, on an Epson 3850 Pigment printer. I prefer high quality paper.
I usuallu use Epson, Ehnanced matt or Velvet, occasionally Hahnemuele or Ilford, Usuall in A2 or A3 size.

My usual supplier in BKK is out of stock, and he informes me Epson is out of stock and not sure when they will receive new stock.

Can anyone tell me where in BKK I can find similar high grade photo paper?

I used this service recently to make some seat cushions for rattan lunge suite and was very happy with their service...

  5. I have an Asus Eee PcSeries netbook, configured with Ubuntu, and minimal software, browser etc. No HD, small intenal SS memory.

    I lost the password.

My friend, who sold it to me and installed it, has since died. I want to pass it on to a new friend, or sell it, but need to make it operational again.

Best option seems re-formatting the HD (nothing of value installed), re-installing the OS system, then some software. New Owner will probably only use it for browsing the web, picking up mail and facebook, and looking at pictures and video clips.

But maybe Ubuntu is unfamiliar, and a functional small size Windows OS better.

    What OS do I use?

Who can do this for me?

Anyone with the skills here, or any recommendations for a techie at TukCom to help me? Preferably one who has sufficient English?

    Thanks !

  6. Any update on Mac Service?

I went to the Mac shop on level 3 in Central with a need for a repair, they barely looked at it and said we send to BKK. Now the BKK Mac shop in Fortune Plaza I go to will look at it in their own service centre behind teh shop, fix on teh spot if they can, or keep it and contact you when ready. But i don't want to go to BKK.

Anyone have good local Mac service?

  7. I need to visit a govt office in central BKK, opposite Central World. But i am driving from outside BKK. Normally i'd park at Central World or so, and walk to that office. But at 8.30 AM, as far as i know, the shopping mall parking lots are still closed. Does anyone know of an open and accessible parking in that area where i'd be able to find a spot at that time of the day? I don't mind paying parking fee.

  8. I need to send an item to the USA (leftover estate of a deceased friend), for which I need eitehr a heavy (3 ply?) corrugated cardboard box, or a crate, custom made. Probelm is they cannot be heavier then 8Kg (limit or Thai Post).

Inside measuremnts 61x40x91 cm or 24x16x36" (LXWXH).

Does anyone know who in Pattaya can do this?

I tried freight forarders, but they simply aren't interested in such a small job, and quoted a ludicrous price. Thailand P.O. is cheapest, but i have to arrange packaging myself, sinc ethese dimensions aren't really standard.

  9. I just flew out of BKK a couple of days ago. Some time ago, my wife observed that on average, female immigration officers process much faster then male. This time, the line was so long and the crowd so big, we accidentally chose a male officer queue. when we got closer, I timed him, he processed one passenger in the time she next to him did three, time and again.

The number of responses to the OP suggests this is a topic that gets lots of TV BM hot under the collar....

  10. I recently bought a Sony NEX5N, with standard kit zoom 18-55 mm. I am very impressed by what it can do. I have a set of 4 excellent Contax G lenses from 12 years ago, and want to buy an adapter to use these on the NEX. I know I can order from overseas via EBay, but would prefer to buy locally.

Anyone know where I could get some in Thailand? I looked at the Photofile online catalogue and they don't stock the Contax adapter.

  11. My wife needs a new laptop, the 5 yr old Sony Vaio is starting to become too slow for her needs (Mail, netsurfing, some Photoshop and a lot of Adobe InDesign, a fairly powerhungry graphic design progrmme. No gaming. To date little or no video editing.

Sony was OK, but seems a bit expensive. Heard good things about Asus and Acer.

Distrust HP (they refused to send me a new driver for my HP printer a few years ago when I was living in Laos "Because Laos was an enemy country." Silly twits!) .

Dell seems to only do online sales, and we kind of like dealing with a person in real life when needing service.

Apple Mac is out, I'm a Mac user myself, but She doesn't like it, and all her existing software is Windows based.

I could read overseas reports and comparisons, but they don't relate to what's available here. I have myself been too long out of Win to know what PC laptop right now is reliable and value for money.

    Any suggestions?

I quite like using IT City because they have branches all over and warranty will be honoured all around Thailand, but are they more expensive? I prefer a shop that is likely to still be there in a year or two. I also like Apple's concept of buying an extended warranty.

13 or 14 inch screen, to cope with weight when travelling, most of the time at home she uses an outside 20" screen.

  12. "Bloom" in the basement of Silom Galeria is a professional print shop that prints many of the photographic exhibitions around BKK. They produce high quality prints and can print on archival material, so your print doesn't fade as soon as you put it on the wall (Like ordinary photographic prints).

Mark, the owner, also speaks decent English, so you can explain what you want.

  13. We're looking for a native Lao speaker who also write lao, for some lessons, preferably one with an avid interst in lao food. My Kiwi wife had published one book on northern Lao food, and is writing an ongoing blog on the subject. We travel to laos frequently, and she wants to improve her spoken and written lao to facilitate the communication with the cooks we visit.

We live near Sattahip, but anyone near Pattaya would also be considered. Our preference is indeed native Lao, not Isan., since isan lao speakers usually don't read and write in lao.

  14. Yes you can, just did this last week, around US30-35, depending on your natioanlity.

Beware, carry US $ for that purpose, if you have baht, you pay a lot more. It pays changing your baht for the required amount in US$ at BKK before you leave. Dutch psport, 35 US$, 1500 BT. The difference buys you a meal in LP!

  15. In the dry season, and open roads, you can drive VT-LP in seven hours. Right now, the road is closed, and unsure when it will open again. Urgent road traffic is routed via a different part of the country taking two days. Reason: Landslide on the VT-LP road due to lots of rain.

Hotels with pool and fitness? Sorry I stay at US$ 20-30/ night, no pool and FTNS. For fitness, get up early, walk up Mount Phousy to the top and back the other side. Will keep you fit if done a few times a week.

In town must: Traditional Arts and Ethnology centre, entrance next to Dara market, on the side of Phousy mountain in the centre of town. If you're there in the next 3 weeks, there's an interesting exhibition at the Project Space gallery, just opposite the entrance to TAEC.

Eat at Tamarind, visit Big Tree cafe and its photographs, and eat lots of great lao food.

PS, I just got back tonight from ten days in LP, loved it!

  16. My wife and i set up a company under New Zealand law about a year ago, with the purpose of publishing and marketing our Laos cookbook.

She got a copy of Quickbooks to keep track of income and expenditure. Now time has come to do the annual accounts, e.g. profit and loss statements and balance sheet, to satisfy requirements of the NZ tax office.

We have all the data, but have a few problems getting it all pulled together. We are looking for a preferably New Zealand, or Aus, or British person with experience in this field, to help us solve a few stumbling points. Is there anyone out there that can lend a hand?

Some of our questions are about where to allocate certain posts, and how to handle costs being carried over to the new financial year.

Is there anyone out there that can lend a hand? We're living in Bang Saray, but are happy to come and meet in or around the Pattaya region. Please PM me if you can help.

  17. I would like to find in pattaya or nearby a French trained solicitor/lawyer, who can assist me with dealing with matters regarding the estate of my deceased sister. I speak some french, but if the person in question also is conversant in Emnglish, or Dutch, it would be a help.

If you are or now such person please contact me, or send me a link.

  18. We just had some alterations done to out bathroom, and the endresult is way below standard. We had a bath removed, a shower stall installed, new shower taps put on the tiled wall (Water pipes inside the wall) etc. The taps are crooked, the showerstall leaks water all over the floor. I am not even thinking about getting the people who installed it to remedy, they obviously were not the right choice.

Can anyone recommend a quality plumber, who can deliver a quality job. It will involve opening the tile wall, re-connecting the tap, replacing the tile and sealing the showerstall. I am prepared to pay a fair price for a good quality job. Someone who understands the concept of level (as in spirit level), and tidy as in immaculate.

  19. But..... will it ever happen. On Beach road Bang Saray there are two other sites, one with a half finished building, no work done for a year or two, one with some poles in the ground and a closed sales office, no work done for 3 years. I'd be very hesitant to buy and pay upfront without seeing the finished product, especially in this market and world economic conditions...

There is a huge developemnt nearer to the main Rd, opposite the Council offices, but that's a lot further then 200 m away, and a bit big for my comfort. Work progressing, but I'll believe it when I see it finished.
