  1. Hello again, this is the village version, my wife's aunt, it's covered because of the rain. The bottom part is cement, this one is mostly used for making chili powder, but there all the same.

Don't forget you still need to sift it.

    rice555

ps, you could mold cement inside a bucket and use a shovel handel :o

That's quiet interesting the picture of the manuel "husker". But I think we found a solution now. In our apartment building we have someone who is driving us nuts with playing their instrument during the day. So we purchased two large mortar and pestle's to pound away at the husked rice. We can thus open the husk and return the noise to our neightbor ;-)

I just know now that next time I will tell the family back in Thailand to send only rice that has been husked if they wish...

  2. Hello,

I just received via post a 20kg bag of sticky rice (IN THE HUSK) from my father in-law back in Thailand.

Now I am trying to find a way to remove the husk from the rice kernel. I know back in Thailand it's easy to find someone who will do this with a machine. But here in Switzerland no chance. I've called around and asked the local Thai stores with no luck.

The wife's idea is to hammer the pieces with the pestle in the morter to separate them. To me that's a lot of work and I'm going to need some serious ear plugs.

Any ideas of how to remove the husk from the rice?

  3. There is also a direct bus from Chon Buri to Mukdahan but it takes about 10 hours overnight.

If you fly into Ubon R. and don't want to drive, give the Ploy Palace a call. They have 2x per day a van that picks up people from Ubon with the fare being 200Baht per way.

  4. Pretty hard to generalize.

My now wife came to Europe each year(2x) for 3 months before we married. So she had a good idea of what it was like here. There are so many other Thai's here, the grocery stores get fresh Thai vegtables flown in 2x weekly, there is a Thai Wat here, etc.... She loves it here.

But we do go back yearly on vacation.

Granted I can't imagine a Thai woman moving to like Norway/Finland where it's ice cold in the winter, no sunshine during the day, etc. That would take one very strong woman to survive and one very strong relationship....

  5. The wedding envelopes (all very Goodfellas!) paid for the wedding costs and the sin sot is effectively in trust for my wife (as farang are preceived as divorce-loving). I can live with that!

Pretty close to what has happend for us. The sinsod was used to pay the wedding costs (100K THB) and the guests(350x) gave envelopes that covered most of the honeymoon. The father who is old and has very little money, bless his heart, raised 100 chickens and grew extra rice in time for the wedding.

So I count myself as being very happy with my extended family.

  6. Does anyone know where one can purchase a solar water heater in Mukdahan? And what the price might be?

If not, where might be the best place to purchase a standard electrical one?

  7. Hello,

We are thinking about purchasing some land in the Chiang Rai area. Thanks to another post, we have some potentional locations to think about from the foreclosed properties from Siam Commerical Bank.

Background: Our idea is to buy the land now, wait 15-20 years to build when I am retired, but will visit the land 1x per year when we normally come to Thailand to vacation and see family. We are looking for 2-5 Rai not in town, rather 10-15 minutes outside of town.

My Question: For the long timers (10+ years) living in Chiang Rai, what are your thoughts on land value in the general area? Has the prices stayed about equal over the past few years? Do you see in general prices going up or staying relatively equal? If they have gone up, at approximately what rate do you think?

All ideas in relation to land prices are appreciated.

  8. Sorry for sounding sincerely niave here, but is it safe to take a private transfer service from Phuket to Koh Yao Noi?

I'm thinking about the safety of the boat and the operator, meaning that we would not be robbed...

Yes I know I sound like an old wart....

  9. Thanks all for the quick replies!

We actually will be having the wedding in Nikhom Kham Soi, which is where the family lives.

Of course we will be having beer for the Thai guests at the lunch and dinner. Just the dinner (for ~75 family members) we will have wine/champagne to raise a toast, not for the whole night! We rather not "westernize" the wedding too much, it should be more Isan style :o

    Happy New Year!!!

  10. Hi,

We are doing our Isan wedding in March and would like to serve some Western wine or Champagne for the dinner with the close family.

Does anyone know of a store(s) in either Ubon Ratchathani or Mukdahan which sells some western spirits?

    -Alex

  11. I have to say some people here just seem to be closed minded. Your mixing two cultures together when getting married and your saying that it's my way or the highway???

If your real about having a partner, then you'll find something that works for both. For example I'm also against the idea of sinsod. But being 34 and having a good job, I take pride in being able to pay for my own wedding. So I gave the parents the 100,000 baht in the wedding "as sinsod" and they used that money to pay for ALL the wedding costs. They kept face, I didn't pay for sinsod, and we both kept our pride.

For each person/couple it's going to be different and no one can tell you what is correct.

  12. Well I was in the same pickle before.

What I did was make the reservation online for her, meaning a hold without payment. Then I sent a bank wire to her bank account for her to pay for the ticket in person in Hong Kong. Then she went to the Thai office and paid the bill.

Now you stated that don't want to send her the money direct. Sounds a bit like there is some trust issues there. But that's your thing to figure out.

Another tip, if your GF is working as a Domestic Helper in Hong Kong, she can go to the Thai Office in Hong Kong and book the ticket for about 1/2 to 1/3 the normal price, because of her occupation in Hong Kong. But this can only be done at the Thai Office in Hong Kong.

  13. Lucifer - You are correct in that NokAir's policy is the same as another domestic air carrier, such as Air Asia.

But in regards to a full air carrier such as Thai Airlines, their Term and Conditions of Carriage are

15.1.1(e) Except in the case of an act or omission done with intent to cause Damage or recklessly and with knowledge that Damage would probably result, our liability in the case of Damage to Checked Baggage shall be limited to 17 Special Drawing Rights (approximately US$20) per kilogram

Which means for a 15kg bag, they would reimburse $300 USD, or about 9,800 Baht.

Tw25RW - Yes I agree that since it's a small network, I would hope if lost they will find it quickly and return quickly.

Durian Chips - Yes 2000 Baht may seem a lot for a Thai person. But I would like to see a Thai person replace a suitcase and two weeks of clothing and all the relevant stuff for a mere 2000 Baht. That's not going to be easy. And I'm no fool, the important stuff for the wedding and my camera is in the carry on bag. And for 9,800 Baht it's reasonable to replace a suitcase and buy the clothes for two weeks to survive.

Rinrada/Ercorn - I have had bags lost in Europe, USA, and in South America. But what kept me happy was that the airlines found the bags with a day or two. And twice when they never found the bags, they paid promptly while on the vacation so that I could replace the clothes and continue to enjoy my vacation.

I'm no broke deadbeat who is unable to spend some $ to buy clothes. Rather I'm just trying to see if the carrier will take responsibility for their actions (or lack of).

  14. I'm thinking of flying with them in December to Phuket and Ubon Ratchathani for my wedding in Isan.

Looking at their website it says if they loose the bags, they will reimburse up to 2000 Baht - that's about $62 USD. To me I find that shocking low, as in that if someone takes the bag, Nok pays almost nothing.

My question is if I am paranoid? Or have other been flying with NokAir or like Asia Air with no problems?

If others have "lost" bags, then I think I'll be sticking with Thai Air so at least I am taken better care of in case.

  15. But did they take the tons of plastic bags out of the trucks first?!

This idea of doing something is only going to backfire in a few years and actually cause more damage than good.

For example for many years around Fort Lauderdale Florida they bundled old tires together with steel bands and nylon straps. Well over time the bands and straps broke. Then when the hurricanes and storms came through, the loose tires went everywhere and caused major damage to the living reefs. It has gotton to the point that the military and local government there are now recovering the tires used to make the artifical reefs.

I can't see the Thai government diving down in 10 years to recover the falling off pieces of the garbage trucks that are killing the still alive coral... Sad.
