  1. Hi fellow woodworker,

I totaly agree with your views on the local way of butchering wood with a chainsaw to make workable boards that take ages to thickness. I do alot of woodwork here in Meaung Loei & have acumulated a good array of tools including a planer/thicknesser & an excellent Makita table saw which I can mannage to cut up to 8" boards with. (4" cut each side) Cutting big timber is a problem here because it's ilegal to own a chainsaw longer than 12" or a big saw mill like the one you are looking for without a government liscence. For big stuff I do the same as I have done for many years in Scotland & leave it to the guys with the big toys. I have befriended the boss of a huge saw mill in Tha Li. They cut my logs to a managable size for me & I do the finishing work. It might be a better idea for you to ffind someone in your area who can do the same for you. A lot less hassle & not expensive. Good luck anyway.

    Hi Scot,

Nice to hear of others with sawdust in their veins. I also have set up a halfway decent shop with the tools requisite for design/build of furniture and various village projects. Have to consult a map to see your location. Would like to get together some time to compare slivers and stock piles. Am mobile at the moment in Laos and will try to pm you later if you are interested.

  3. I do believe the chainsaw legality issue is getting blown way out of proportion. As I understand it, there are no issues to prevent you from owning one. There are registration requirements for the big saws but this is seldom if ever enforced. There is a lot bigger issue when it comes to transporting the lumber as the BIB love their tea/mia noy fund.

  4. Gary,

Thx for the info. There are basically 3 types of portable mills; chain saw, band and circular; all of which have their positive and negative attributes. I have not seen too many petro powered band saws so that limits their portability as does access to parts should the band saw fail. Chain saw parts/supplies are much more readily available

Most portable saw mills are the band saw type. The log lays on a frame and the band saw travels on rollers attached to this frame. They are pretty slick and accurate. Chinese brands start at about $4,000 US.

  5. Has anyone seen or heard of a chain saw mill being used in Thailand. My experience to date has been watching the Thai's freehand cut logs into slabs with the chain saw in lengths rarely exceeding 1.5 meters. Depending on the skills of the operator, this can result in some pretty poor looking slabs of wood that require extensive planing before the wood is suitable for furniture.

I know there are commercial kits available that would suffer from customs tariffs but I have seen as numerous designs on the web for DIY enthusiast.

I know about and have heard all the rants about wood being a highly controlled substance so lets not go there,

    Measure twice, cut once

  6. I would disagree about the cost difference, the D90 came out in 08 and the average price for the 18-105 kit was US$1200. Amazon is taking pre-orders of the D7000 kit for US$1499 for the early birds, the price will most likely come down a bit once the camera is available on the street. Based upon the specs of the D7000, the small increase is pretty easy to justify.

I own a D90 and would love to get my hands on the D7k but the D90 does everything I ask and more and I find it difficult to substantiate the upgrade.

As mentioned above, the most important part of the camera is the glass, consider a body only and then shop for the len(s) to fit your needs.

    D90 results in the attachments.

    Happy snapping,

from reading the specs, the 7000 is a vast improvement over the 90 but it also costs a lot more. 16 mg pixes is great.

About time to upgrade from my D80

  7. Hi,

From last AOT conference on Thai TV :

    About Suvarnabhumi international airport :

    - should be able to receive passagers in 48 h (04th dec, midnight)

    - no departure of passagers before 1 week (about 9th dec)

    - return to normal traffic before the 15th of december, 6pm.

    Pattaya46

Now that makes a lot of sense, of course the airlines will jump at the chance to bring a plane full of passengers into Thailand and then depart with an empty plane for the first 5 days of the grand reopening. Perhaps they will charge double for the inbound to cover the loses.

  8. Lived in Malaysia for many years and watched the Proton go down hill. Due mostly to QA/QC problems the car company has lost its #1 position in Malaysia. That in it self should tell you something when the locals are disgruntled with the local product despite its price advantages.

The Gen II was an in-house design including the under powered engine and like their first in-house designed car (Wira) has materials and assembly problems along with mechanical issues.

I would not and could not recommend a Proton to anyone other than my enemies until such time as they get their act together. Oh and Proton was replaced by Purodua as the #1 in Malaysia. It is your basic POS.

  9. After browsing and searching the net for the past few days, I am unable to find a source in Thailand for woodworking hand tools manufactured in Japan. :D I know others here have mentioned possessing Japanese woodworking tools but I can not seem to locate the posts. :D

In particular, I am seeking hand saws and chisels applicable to joinery such as dovetail and mortise/tennon but am interested in other woodworking tools as well.

The best source so far has been from the US (Japanwoodworker.com) but I have to believe that there is a source much closer as shipping from there is very expensive and would probably cost as much as a ticket to Japan (which may be my best option :o )

As an alternative, any Japaneses websites selliing the goods would be greatly appreciated.

  10. Hi

Would anyone give opinions about Ford Ranger?

1 year Ranger 4 door 4x4, 5 sp auto: 0 problems to date, joy to drive, plenty of torque, auto trans is very smooth as long as you let it do its thing and don't get agressive

I plan to buy 4X2 double cab hi-rider automatic.

Would recommend the hi-rider for ground clearance and elevated driver position

There's no discount since I only made 15% of deposit.

I my experience it is rare to get a discount. Use the add-on options for bargaining

But dealer told me following free service.

    Rear bumper

    included by dealer

    Side steps

    Purchased aftermarket

    Bed liner

    included by dealer

    Window tint

    included by dealer

    1st class insurance

1 year included by dealer, shop around when it comes due as you are sure to find better rates

    Free transfer

    not included

Should I ask more free service?

I wanted a stereo upgrade and received a 8000 baht rebate towards the purchase

I received 1000 baht petrol voucher

Push them to see what else they will include to make the sale, don't be afraid to walk away and play hard-to-get, if they don't play along you can always accept the previous offer. Make sure to get the offer and all add-on's in writing at the time of discussions or all deals are off and you will have to start over.

And what's opinions about this car?

Very happy and would definitely do it again.

    Thank you

  11. I am in the same boat as my pp is approaching the 'less than 1 year' date and will have to be renewed.

    1. Not sure the origin of your pp but it is an easy task to get additional pages added to a US pp.

    2. I also have the BOI 1 year extension and was told by immigration that it could be transfered to the new pp with a visit to the local immigration office (Sriracha, Chonburi), obviously bring in both pp's for the transfer.

    Hi guys

Iv just had to renew my passport due to it being full and was wondering where i go to swap over the Visa stamps..

i have a Non-b and work permit from BOI issued by the one-stop visa place on phaloyoutin road which means i dont have to leave the country for a year i just go their every 3 months..

So my question is do i just go there to change my visa over or do i go to the immigration

Any advice off somebody who has done this please..

    Nice 1

  12. 9.5 weeks is still young and he wants the attention especially after being out all day with the other dogs. Start by telling him NO when he barks and give him a verbal GOOD BOY when he does. (choose the command words that work for you but keep them consistant)

Have you tried allowing him to spend the night with the your other dogs, I am willing to bet that this will solve your problem (much to the dismay of the other dogs who have to put up with his constant frolics but it may give you the peace and quiet you seek.

  13. Xexpat,

Thailand's efforts to rid itself of negative pessimistic anti-Thai persons such as yourself was apparently successful judging by your nick. :D If I didn't know better, I would say you have a heavy axe to grind. :o

Of course Thailand is not perfect but then I have yet to discover a country that is. You see what you want to see, I prefer to see the positive side of Thailand and the strides it has taken in the 20 years I have had the privilege to occupy some of it's real estate. I would prefer that you keep your personal Thai-phobic views safely locked away in your closed mind of pessimism. :D

Remember that Thailand is its own country and can run the country in any way it seems fit, just as any other country in the world. As they say, if you don't like it, find the place that is your Shangri-La, Thailand certainly does not fit the bill in your case. Good luck finding your niche but remember, even heaven is full of sinners. :D

Actually I beg to differ...I think Thailand's will attract MORE TOURISTS with all these crazy things...murders, boats sinking with tourists on them, buses catching fire, planes hitting the airport terminal, fires in hotels, etc. Because, it will attract the paedophiles and sex tourists who think hope Thailand is still dirty, corrupt, and dysfunctional as ever. They love the idea of poverty and corruption, cuz then they can molest away whatever and whereever they want.

Of course, they kick out the decent people (who live modestly, trying to have a meager but decent lifestyle...but don't spend all that much) by draconian xenophobic laws, then give the old retired men and short term visitors with unlimited paedophilic spending potential long term visas (the "high spenders"), and promote theirselves as the most dysfunctional country in SouthEast Asia. (Well, except Burma). Even Philippines GDP is 7.9% now. While Filipinos try to enter medical professions on the mass scale, Thais are busy causing spreading all the STD's in the first place.

Then instead of providing and promoting healthy foods, Thailand breaks patents to get the free drugs for obesity! I can understand HIV drugs for the poor, but its not for the poor. Thais never cared for the poor, ask any of the poor. Thailand loses far more money when a munitions cache blows up, or when they pass silly draconian investment laws, or when ships full of foreign tourists sink (lets see in the past 5 years, there's been atleast 20 ships sunk in Southern Thailand)....because of their own lame stupidity! Yet "dirt poor" Thailand as they claim, is one of the few nations with an aircraft carrier. What poor peace loving nation needs an aircraft carrier? Sell the ###### carrier and buy the drugs for the poor like the rest of the world!

Of course the West is upset, Thailand acts like its their god given right to drugs. Yet their lazy asses never invented any. While India is busy providing the intellectual manpower for the world development, and making drugs accessible for the genuinely poor, Thailand destroys patents for drugs induced by its own self destructive modern lifestyle!

Never mind that everything is fried in Thailand, cuz cockroaches and rats are everywhere. Never mind that people are turning to 7-Eleven food, laced with so much sugar, fat, and salt. Never mind that you have to buy fruits in the supermarket cuz u get diarrhea. Never mind kids are fattening away at internet cafes playing video games all day never learning social skills. Never mind far more people die on t

    e way to the hospital,

cuz they ask for money first before helping, cuz they refuse service in the ambulance, cuz the ambulance can't get through the traffic jam cuz nobody wants to really spend on the public for traffic solutions.

Never mind changing (and enforcing) laws so that farang don't get murdered by their thai wives. Never mind actually trying to do anything!

Never mind just means, you are being screwed but not me...so why do I care?

  14. mooshcat, I am with you on this one, the Thai news may not be that far from the truth :o , the word on the street from the BIB's is that he was a scapegoat to get a quick resolution and minimize the tarnish effect. If that is indeed true, then the real criminals are still out there and this tragic episode is due to repeat. :D

For some reason this subject burns my biscuit.

The Thai news seems to doubt that the man was guilty, or if he was, he was guilty alone and for the reason stated - just theft. They, the free-ish media, seem to want to know what really happened.

But us fat white blokes on this forum dont.

    Hang him now!

Killing him wont help the truth come out. It will simply end the story.

It seems the pattaya boys on this site would love him to be dead asap. Cos Pattaya is a happy land of adult fun with no crime.

    Yeah ...

Kill the poor boy now and let there be an end to the idea that there is a Mafia in Pattaya, because, of course, whores and organised crime dont mix.

  15. Unless someone can confirm this with an actual experience, I do not believe that this ban is being inforced.

I have personally purchased liquids (yesterday) in the terminal and they are now placed in a sealed plastic bag with specific instructions to not open the bag prior to boarding the plane.

The final luggage inspection at the gate is no problem as long as the bag has not been opened. Whether or not you are in transit does not seem to be an issue.

    Anyone have a different experience????????????

  16. The shop you are referring to is BOY SOUND. They specialize in auto audio but have a lot of other whistles and bells that can be added. I would recommend that you stop in and have a chat with them as they are quite helpful. Also, if they do not have what you want in their stock, they may be able get it for you out of Bangkok.

    Happy accessorizing,

    DD

    Hi huys,

Need to know from where i can buy car accessories in bangkok & pattaya at a cheaper price. I am looking for stickers, gauges, dashboard pads, clocks, ipod connectors, car decoration stuffs, bulbs lights etc..

    Thanx in advance

We are new in Pattaya and found a shop on Sukhumvit Road, Pattaya north east side of the road opposite Toyota dealer. There is a big sign 'BOSS Sound' outside and they did a great job for us. Their afterservice is also great; we had some problems with a car alarm but they replaced it at once.

  17. The following info was copied from:

    http://www.savenetradio.org/

    from this link:

    http://www.di.fm/blog/read/2007/05/we-will...ew-royalty.html

I for one regularly listen to Net Radio from various sites and this bill reeks of 'big brother' as it is going after any Net Radio that has listeners in the USA, and you thought all the crazy political antics and greed tactics were reserved for Thailand.

The first line of defense is as stated in the article, get the CRB to pass a realistic and practical law which means only US citizens can have an impact. The rest can spread the word that the Net is under attack from the GWB & Company worm.

    THE ISSUE:

In March the United States Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) made a decision on what the webcasting royalties should be going forward and dating back starting with 2006.

The new fees, making us owe literally more than *two million dollars* due July 15th, do not take any realistic business model of a service such as ours and most others on the web into account. The short story translation is that Digitally Imported the company already owes just for 2006 many many times more in royalty fees than all combined revenue generated. Imagine a picture similar to if for every $1 we earn before even any expenses, we actually owe about $5 in royalty fees.

To make an analogy, imagine there was a law passed on an ice cream tax, and the tax rate depended on the number of visitors visiting your store rather than how much ice cream the store sold. So imagine the tax does not care if ice cream buyers came just to hang out and get a little bit of icecream - all ice cream stands would go out of business except those who sell wholesale mega packs to a few visitors in places like Sams Club or Costco, or Walmart if it was willing to loose money just to get you into their store.

The CRB judges completely ignored independent webcasters such as us and our business models, and adopted only a very high per song performance fee, without any kind of a provision for a percentage of revenue.

    UNLESS THIS IS FIXED:

This situation spells doom for webcasting on the Internet, and many services such as Digitally Imported Radio will be forced to stop all public webcasting, switch to subscriptions only, or SHUT DOWN ENTIRELY - WITHIN MONTHS, IF NOT WEEKS!

MOVING AWAY IS NOT AN OPTION:

We do not want to consider moving to another country. First, there are legal precedents where it is established that as long as we serve listeners in the USA, regardless of where from, we are liable for that audience. As the business model relies heavily on affordable bandwidth in the USA, there is no realistic nice way of going around operating at least some of the infrastructure in the USA. Besides we just don't want to and should not have to do this in our own country.

    OTHER FACTS:

    - Terrestrial AM and FM stations in the USA pay absolutely nothing, for recording industry royalties due to a law made in consideration of promotion value that playing provides in return.

    - Satellite Radio services pay 7.5% of revenue.

    - So why must Internet Radio pay something that translates to 100-500% of revenue?

WHAT CAN BE DONE? WE AND ALL WEBCASTERS NEED *YOU* - RIGHT NOW!!!

All Webcasters big and small are united in the <a href="http://www.savenetradio.org/" target="_blank">S

aveNetRadio.org</a> campaign to persuade US Congress to change this recent decision and set more realistic and fair rates. A new bill titled Internet Radio Equality Act was just introduced in Congress and we need YOU to call your congressperson and ask them to support this bill # H.R. 2060. Unfortunately you can only do this if you reside in the USA, all others scroll down.

DOES YOUR CALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Yes, very much so. A few years ago during the last round of troubles like this we had example of just one listener in a specific district call and talk to their representative and it was enough to convince him to vote in support of that bill. They are YOUR representatives, their job is to listen to you. Please exercise your rights, don't be shy or afraid to make the call, each call makes a HUGE difference.

HOW, WHO, OR WHERE TO CALL?

Please go to SaveNetRadio.org and there click on "Call Your Representative". The page allows you to enter your zipcode. Enter the zipcode and it will show you who your district congressperson is, their office phone number, and the summary of points we recommend that you should explain or mention to them. Everything is provided there for you. You will most likely reach the legislative aide, and it's good to talk to them as you will rarely be able to get the congressman directly on the phone in person.

  18. Nissan looks nice, but there is now dealer in my area.

I don't like Mazda or Ford.

I really don't understand why Toyota Vigo don't have dual airbags, sure can not retro fit them with a passenger air bag?

There is a lot more to it than just retro-fitting a bag as the SRS (safety restraint system) is computer controlled with g force sensors, impact sensors, etc that all require setup and in some cases installation. I had the same thoughts as you until research proved that it is not a simple task.

Why Toyota does not offer it as an option is a mystery as the Fortuner does come equipped with dual bags and the Vigo interior is an exact replica of the Fortuner based on Toyota's common chassis concept. No amount of talking would have them change their minds.

You have stated that you don't like them but if safety is truly a concern, the Ford Ranger Limited has dual front air bags as well as side impact bags. Not sure if there are any other makes with the side air bags.

  19. Totally out of place in a family tourist city. And you wonder why 8 year old girls get raped. It happens because guys get raised on scenes such as the Russian girls sex poses, hormones jump, and the young and weak get molested.

    Tammi,

You are definitely on the right track but why stop there, why not enhance the Pattaya family tourist image city even more:

Ban all automobile as they are know to kill innocent tourists including 8 YO girls

Ban all 'unhealthy' food resturants as they are known to cause obesity in children

Ban all children from beaches, lord knows how many of them have drown while engaged in their silly beachtime activities.

Ban all public displays of department store lingerie, they must not be viewable by the general male population due to male hormonal inhancement qualities.

Tammi, feel free to add to the list, I am sure you have other wonderful ideas floating around in your head. Together we can make Pattaya a 'family safe' environment.

  20. Every single contribution to this thread is about owning land and houses, which is of course illegal. The title of this thread, is I am afraid, contrary to the other issues of property ownership in Thailand i.e. apartments, which are legal and are doing fine thank you.

Please cease confusing the two! Confusing illegal and legal activity serves only one purpose.

pkrv, your statement is a prime example of someone talking out of their a$$. There are many LEGAL ways to set up land ownership, the key being the definition of 'ownership' which means the use of the land, not the personal possession of it.

For your information, owning a house in Thailand has never been illegal, please consult the facts before spreading your verbal rubbish.

  21. As a generalization most Asian nations allow visitation of some sort be it short or long stay for Thai's but each one is different in its requirements/applications. As I understand it, the Asean countries are not a problem for Thai's.

Since yours is a unique situation in that you and your unmarried spouse have a child, you really need to decide which country(ies) you are interested in or want to go to and then contact their consulate/embassy or check their website for specifics.
