for fresh meat and veg the local traditional market is the place to go...the stuff on offer is usually fresher and cheaper than tescos...
peanut butter? well...that's another story...
Local butcher before going to market

These vents aren't all that expensive and do a decent job. The crude ones used for outdoor grills (such as in local markets) cost very little, and sometimes operate with a makeshift reapplied fan.
Cooking smells sticking inside the house can be countered with vigorous constant cleaning of panels, but that's a chore. For fridge - we use sealed boxes for the nasty stuff, no problems. There are also these thingies, sort of like foam cube inside a plastic frame which sucks some of the bad smells (never really used these).
Guess I'm lucky though....most of what the Mrs. cooks smells great, and she usually avoids bringing out the occasional "special" when we eat together.
Also put baking soda in an open container in the frig.

Sorry the fingers are to fast.
Just relax and enjoy the place. Yes there are many bars to pick from but at least you know you can bring the Ms. And not get hassled.

I'll be visiting in the end March. I don't expect any special treatment and don't care to know anyone's user names.
Just a visit for a drink and some food with the ms.
If you remember how the Farang Connection was a meeting place for TV members on special occasions, for food and drinks. The owner has pasted away a few years back people just said

Sorry I meant a worst experience in NY

With that said, Thailand I believe, is still in still in the Developing Phase. Yes the major cities infrastructure has come along way and the major Universities world ranking is increasing.
I live in northern Issan and we are finally seeing some major road improvements. I'm not talking about highways, but the roads people in the area use everyday. Education here, although better, is still a problem. I continuously donate time and learning material to the neighboring villages to help in the education system. Education and world knowledge is what will bring any country forward.
OP the bus experience you had has nothing to do with a countries status.
I myself have been in all the countries listed above that were called 3rd world and had better experiences in taxis then in NY.

THE TERMS FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD WORLD ARE OBSOLETE SINCE THE 1990'S!!!! Nobody use it now except old books and outdated professors.
The terms used now in the modern and politically correct global community is DEVELOPED, NEWLY DEVELOPED and DEVELOPING countries.
Thailand, according to the WorldBank is in between Newly Developed and Developing.
Thailand's economy surpassed that of Malaysia (the second richest in Southeast Asia after Singapore) in 2005. Thailand is the second richest economy of the 10 Southeast Asia Economic Community at this point in time.
Third World
DEFINITION OF 'THIRD WORLD'
A phrase commonly used to describe a developing nation, but actually started as term used to describe a country's allegiance. A Third World country is a country whose views are not aligned with NATO and capitalism or the Soviet Union and communism. The use of the term Third World started during the Cold War and was used to identify which of three categories the countries of the world aligned with. The First World meant that you aligned withe NATO and capitalism, and the Second World meant you supported Communism and the Soviet Union.
INVESTOPEDIA EXPLAINS 'THIRD WORLD'
Developing nations are commonly referred to as Third World. These developing countries can be found in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. These countries were at one point colonies which were formally lead by imperialism. The end of imperialism forced these colonies to survive on their own. With lack of support, these colonies started to develop characteristics such as poverty, high birthrates and economic dependence on other countries. The term was then affiliated to the economic situation of these former colonies and not their social alliances to either capitalism or communism.

Interesting topic.
Around here, young Thai-Ladies very much like to work at a local Tesco. But sometimes the problem is: As those Tescos and 7/11 are run by almost "european-efficiency-standards", the turnover of employees is high. For a good number of those employees it's just "too fast paced".
= Most of my neighbors do nothing most of the time unless something has to be planted or harvested. They swing in their hammocks and watch TV, only interrupted by frequent meals and extensive chats. And they seem to be perfectly happy. And for this, I can only admire them.
Much to my regret, this livestyle has no future, not even in remote aereas of Thailand/Cambodia/Laos. TV Commercials convey to everyone, what one must own these days to render happyness:(Refrigerator, TV, Car, I-Phone, etc.)
So for the time remaining and as long as it lasts, I enjoy my neighbors swinging in their hammocks and for most of the time they "do nothing".
Cheers.

I will be the first to say Clinton is the best speaker in my life time. But he is some info. I'm tired of both parties.
Despite a growing population, fewer Americans have jobs today than when Obama took office. And the jobs pay less, too.
With the release Friday morning of the August job numbers, there are still 261,000 fewer Americans employed than when Obama became president. Almost a million -- 822,000 -- fewer Americans have permanent jobs.
And we have fewer jobs despite there being many more Americans than four years ago. There are now over 8.4 million more working age Americans. Normally about 60 percent of the working age population have jobs. Thus, it would have been necessary to add about 130,000 jobs each month just to keep the share of the working age population employed from falling.
The middle and upper income jobs lost during the recession are being replaced lower-wage jobs during Obama’s recovery. Middle income occupations accounted for 60 percent of the jobs lost from the first quarter of 2008 to first quarter of 2010, but 58 percent of the jobs created since then have been in lower-wage occupations. While we have lost jobs in skilled construction, real estate, and supervisors, most new jobs are in retail sales and food preparation.
Unsurprisingly, median household income and wealth has fallen during the Obama administration.
Former President Bill Clinton made the argument Wednesday night: “No president, no president -- not me, not any of my predecessors -- no one could have fully repaired all the damage that he found in just four years.”
But Clinton is wrong.
Democrats may not want to hear it, but Reagan faced an unemployment rate as high as 10.8% and was able to drive it down below 8 percent within 14 months. By contrast, unemployment under Obama peaked at 10.0%, eight months after his “stimulus” was passed, and after another 33 months it is still above 8%.
Remember back in March 2009, just five weeks after the stimulus was signed into law, President Obama was already declaring: “We’re beginning to see signs of progress.” By May, Obama told Americans: the program was “already seeing results.” In September, Vice President Joe Biden announced: “In my wildest dreams, I never thought [the stimulus] would work this well.” But unemployment just kept on increasing. By April 2010, Obama administration announced the summer of 2010 would become known as the “Summer of Recovery.”
Needless to say, we aren’t now close to the 6% unemployment rate that the Obama administration was predicting after the stimulus passed. And four more jobs programs were passed after the stimulus during Obama’s first two years in office, and positive results were promised each time. Yet, instead, this has been the worst recovery on record.
Thursday night in his speech to the Democratic National Convention, President Obama belittled Republican tax cuts. Instead, he proposed more of the same with his tired policies: still more subsidizing “green” energy production, still more special tax treatment for select manufacturing industries, and still more money towards public schools and the teachers’ unions. But rather than letting individual investors determine where they can get the highest return for their money, Obama wants to pick the winners himself by using tax dollars to help them out.
American investors were smart enough not to invest their own money into ethanol, solar, or wind energy. Only government invests in businesses where costs greatly exceed revenue.
Despite Republican attempts to cut taxes, the United States still has by far the highest marginal corporate income tax rate in the world. The US also has the most progressive tax structure, with the richest Americans paying a larger share of total tax revenue. The richest 10% of Americans pay 45% of the taxes. The average for the 34 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries is only 32%.
The top income earners are not the only ones who face penalties from earning more. President Obama has increased the effective penalty even for low- and moderate-income families earning more money. Not only do people lose federal earned income tax credits as well as pay federal and state taxes as their income increases, but they also lose the ever expanding government handouts including housing subsidies, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, and food stamps.
The loss of these welfare programs and taxes is so large that when the average person earning between $10,000 and $40,000 makes an additional dollar they lose 82 cents -- 53 cents worth of government welfare programs and another 29 cents is lost through reduced tax credits and higher taxes. Who wants to work more when they lose 82 cents of each additional dollar that they earn?
On top of that the regulatory burden facing companies has soared since Obama became president. The World Economic Forum had ranked the US first in competitiveness from when the index started in 2004 until 2008. Yet, we slipped to second in 2009, fourth in 2010, fifth in 2011, and now seventh in 2012. Indexes by other organizations have shown similar drops. At the beginning of his administration, Obama promised: “If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s gonna be a one-term proposition.” Mr. President your time for excuses ended months ago.

The Tavern gets my vote. As you said you can stand right next to girl as she cooks it. The owner is from the states and the meat seasoning is just salt and pepper. The meat is French/Thai which I favor over the bland Aussie beef. For the fries the potatoes are hand sliced. Recommend that if you like crispy fries you tell up fr

What's the "2115" ?
Is there a regular bus to Thali, other than the Baht Bus types. Not that this is a problem, but we were told initially that the only buses from Loei are the local types that run from the small shelter opposite to the main bus station!
Thanks. Also any news on the 'maybe' resort off to the side of the Thali road?
Fishhooks
You are good for the location to pick up the mini bus. Schedule changes but should be about every hour. When I mentioned 2115 I was refering to the road up to Thali. The resort in Thali is Hia Tee Resort. #042889061. I do not have any good or bad things to say about it. I or anyone I know has stayed there. Good luck. When are you coming?

anyone in here was diagnosed with this and had surgery done here in Thailand,
Can anyone give some advise on where, what and how much it would be to get it done.
Or maybe anyone tried something else to get rid of them?
I can't answer all your questions, but my Thai friend recently had the operation done at Chulalongkorn Hospital and they did it the modern way by laproscopic surgery. He felt it was done very well and in the hospital 5 days.
5 days in the hospital? I thought it was a one overnight procedure? Or maybe a second night but 5 nights?
Anyway any idea on what he paid for it with the 5 days stay?
5 days is a long time for a laparoscopically. You should be out in 2 days.

When I took the local bus from Loei to Thali a while back, I noticed what I thought were holiday type guest houses or similar off to the side of the road in the mountains not too far from Thali.
Area looked nice and relaxing.
Anyone have knowledge of these places or contact details.
Thought some of the Loei Expats may be able to help, thanks in anticipation.

BangkokPost.com) - Airports of Thailand (AOT) acting president Serirat Pasutanond said Suvarnabhumi airport could resume operation in about a week once the anti-government protesters led by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leave the airport.
Mr Serirat expected it would take authorities approximately seven days to check the readiness of Suvarnabhumi once the protesters leave.
He said 88 aircrafts stranded at Suvarnabhumi are gradually being released to transport the remaining passengers from the U-Tapao airport in Rayong province.
AirAsia announced that the airliner had arranged special flights from Chiang Mai, Phuket and U-Tapao airports to more than 10 destinations to facilitate stranded passengers. People can log on to www.airasia.com for further information.
Thai Airways also offered 14 outgoing flights from U-Tapao, one flight from Chiang Mai airport, two flights from Phuket airport, 16 incoming flights to U-Tapao, a flight to Chiang Mai airport and two flights to Phuket airport.
