These vents aren't all that expensive and do a decent job. The crude ones used for outdoor grills (such as in local markets) cost very little, and sometimes operate with a makeshift reapplied fan.

Cooking smells sticking inside the house can be countered with vigorous constant cleaning of panels, but that's a chore. For fridge - we use sealed boxes for the nasty stuff, no problems. There are also these thingies, sort of like foam cube inside a plastic frame which sucks some of the bad smells (never really used these).

Guess I'm lucky though....most of what the Mrs. cooks smells great, and she usually avoids bringing out the occasional "special" when we eat together.

Also put baking soda in an open container in the frig.

  2. I'll be visiting in the end March. I don't expect any special treatment and don't care to know anyone's user names.

Just a visit for a drink and some food with the ms.

If you remember how the Farang Connection was a meeting place for TV members on special occasions, for food and drinks. The owner has pasted away a few years back people just said

  3. With that said, Thailand I believe, is still in still in the Developing Phase. Yes the major cities infrastructure has come along way and the major Universities world ranking is increasing.

I live in northern Issan and we are finally seeing some major road improvements. I'm not talking about highways, but the roads people in the area use everyday. Education here, although better, is still a problem. I continuously donate time and learning material to the neighboring villages to help in the education system. Education and world knowledge is what will bring any country forward.

OP the bus experience you had has nothing to do with a countries status.

I myself have been in all the countries listed above that were called 3rd world and had better experiences in taxis then in NY.

  4. THE TERMS FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD WORLD ARE OBSOLETE SINCE THE 1990'S!!!! Nobody use it now except old books and outdated professors.

The terms used now in the modern and politically correct global community is DEVELOPED, NEWLY DEVELOPED and DEVELOPING countries.

Thailand, according to the WorldBank is in between Newly Developed and Developing.

Thailand's economy surpassed that of Malaysia (the second richest in Southeast Asia after Singapore) in 2005. Thailand is the second richest economy of the 10 Southeast Asia Economic Community at this point in time.

    Third World

    DEFINITION OF 'THIRD WORLD'

A phrase commonly used to describe a developing nation, but actually started as term used to describe a country's allegiance. A Third World country is a country whose views are not aligned with NATO and capitalism or the Soviet Union and communism. The use of the term Third World started during the Cold War and was used to identify which of three categories the countries of the world aligned with. The First World meant that you aligned withe NATO and capitalism, and the Second World meant you supported Communism and the Soviet Union.

    INVESTOPEDIA EXPLAINS 'THIRD WORLD'

Developing nations are commonly referred to as Third World. These developing countries can be found in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. These countries were at one point colonies which were formally lead by imperialism. The end of imperialism forced these colonies to survive on their own. With lack of support, these colonies started to develop characteristics such as poverty, high birthrates and economic dependence on other countries. The term was then affiliated to the economic situation of these former colonies and not their social alliances to either capitalism or communism.

  5. Interesting topic.

Around here, young Thai-Ladies very much like to work at a local Tesco. But sometimes the problem is: As those Tescos and 7/11 are run by almost "european-efficiency-standards", the turnover of employees is high. For a good number of those employees it's just "too fast paced".

= Most of my neighbors do nothing most of the time unless something has to be planted or harvested. They swing in their hammocks and watch TV, only interrupted by frequent meals and extensive chats. And they seem to be perfectly happy. And for this, I can only admire them.

Much to my regret, this livestyle has no future, not even in remote aereas of Thailand/Cambodia/Laos. TV Commercials convey to everyone, what one must own these days to render happyness:(Refrigerator, TV, Car, I-Phone, etc.)

So for the time remaining and as long as it lasts, I enjoy my neighbors swinging in their hammocks and for most of the time they "do nothing".

    Cheers.

  6. The Tavern gets my vote. As you said you can stand right next to girl as she cooks it. The owner is from the states and the meat seasoning is just salt and pepper. The meat is French/Thai which I favor over the bland Aussie beef. For the fries the potatoes are hand sliced. Recommend that if you like crispy fries you tell up fr

  7. Nah its just a jolly for a few days. Sightseeing stuff by day and good pizza by night. NY style best in the city and a place for quality deep dish please.

My hotel will have a gym and pool no need to worry.

Chicago style pizza in New York? Don't tell the natives.

There must be a place. Go on whisper it softly...biggrin.png

  8. Need some recommendations on where to buy patio furniture. I live in the Loei area but also will be in the Udon area next week. I am looking for a table, chairs and umbrella. Any help would be appreciated.

    What's the "2115" ?

Is there a regular bus to Thali, other than the Baht Bus types. Not that this is a problem, but we were told initially that the only buses from Loei are the local types that run from the small shelter opposite to the main bus station!

Thanks. Also any news on the 'maybe' resort off to the side of the Thali road?

    Fishhooks

You are good for the location to pick up the mini bus. Schedule changes but should be about every hour. When I mentioned 2115 I was refering to the road up to Thali. The resort in Thali is Hia Tee Resort. #042889061. I do not have any good or bad things to say about it. I or anyone I know has stayed there. Good luck. When are you coming?

  11. anyone in here was diagnosed with this and had surgery done here in Thailand,

Can anyone give some advise on where, what and how much it would be to get it done.

Or maybe anyone tried something else to get rid of them?

I can't answer all your questions, but my Thai friend recently had the operation done at Chulalongkorn Hospital and they did it the modern way by laproscopic surgery. He felt it was done very well and in the hospital 5 days.

5 days in the hospital? I thought it was a one overnight procedure? Or maybe a second night but 5 nights?

Anyway any idea on what he paid for it with the 5 days stay?

5 days is a long time for a laparoscopically. You should be out in 2 days.

  12. When I took the local bus from Loei to Thali a while back, I noticed what I thought were holiday type guest houses or similar off to the side of the road in the mountains not too far from Thali.

    Area looked nice and relaxing.

Anyone have knowledge of these places or contact details.

Thought some of the Loei Expats may be able to help, thanks in anticipation.

I am assumimg you where on 2115 to Tha Li. I travel that road all the time on my way home from Loei. I do not live to far out from Tha Li. I only know of some well to do Thai folks that have build some nice homes. I will check with the misses to she if she knows.
