  1. seamless???

    Doesn't even approach it!

the coverage is not the problem either I am well aware of that - what is so disappointing is the complete failure to supply - despite their claims - a service that is useable - if they claim it to be it should within reasonable limits function as they say - the truth is and I'm backed up by AIS technicians here - they really haven;'t thought it through, you are unable to top-up in a satisfactory way and the a/c - is worked out not on GB or monthly whichever comes sooner but once your GB is up they disconnect you. They then claim your account is finished and try to put you on a more expensive rate. - there is of course no way to check this or the amount you have used.

Even when I pre-pay the money is never credited to my account - Telewiz have no idea whatsoever about the account and fail to top it up they even tried to charge VAT on a VAT inclusive deal- the only way I can continue the service is to go into the AIS office in advance and then again when I've been cut off.

You can't even buy top -up card to the values required, help line haven't got a clue - they have received no training or information, they do however charge for the phone calls, they do ring back when they have to go and ask for assistance. I would say on average topping up every month takes about 8 to 12 hours plus at least or or sometimes two trips to they office

It is what it is. A trial service.

They have allocated narrow band from their 900MHz licence used on 2G and have set up couple of base stations with minimum capasity to test it out. In Chiang Mai they had capasity to handle around 3000 subscribers with limited speeds when they started the trial and i'm not aware that they have added anything since.

If you then believe their marketing hype and expect to get usable wireless broadband dream on...

3000 subscribers? dream on. add atleast 3 0s to that "they do however charge for the phone calls"

  2. As a mobiles technician I can tell ya that this wont effect anything so-long as AIS AND TOT each have 3G networks in place already. For every base station Moblie broadband is 1 or 2 extra peices of hardware than wats allready in place for voice. and about half a days tweaking of software etc. The cards could be installed through out the country within weeks. OK sorry i forgot we are talking about Thailand....3 weeks. But in general terms, I've worked in the industry in Australia and New Zealand for over 8 years and this sort of tit for tat childishness between carriers occurs throughout the world. Lets face it, if you have literally 1/3 or 1/4 of the countries population subscribing to your carrier, the little bits add up to lots and lots and lots of cash. For 1 carrier to ask for roaming onto what the other carrier have just invested shirt loads into for free. is a bit rude. hence the argument.

  3. Ok Ok Ok. This techie stuff is all great if you know what your saying and reading about. However. If you have absolutly no idea about electricity like myself its not much fun.......

I have had a 16 year old house in Chiang Mai for 2 years and quite frankly am sick of being zapped. So far i have been electrocuted by the kettle, the Refrigerator, the back of computer, the computer monitor and the most recent the TV ariel. The TV ariel??? Is this actually possible? Well it is now.. it happened.

I recently ventured into my roof space to find a Junction box full of exposed, twisted together wires that was obviously prepared by little kid and not an electrician.

My question is? If i want to pull all this crap out of the house and have a decent safe system installed who do i approach to carry out the work? I am in Central Chiang Mai. There must be a person in this city that can make my electricity supply just a bit safer. but buggered if i can find him/her.......

i read of a guy named Prathom in another section of this site. Is he the man to contact or is there a electrical contracting mob that any one reading this forum can recommend in CM?

Any help would be much appreciated.

  4. Face saving = Progress in Thailand + enemy number 1

    Mai Chop! Mai tong pood!!!!

I wonder what Thailand would be like if there was just a little bit of constructive criticism allowed without the fear of "Face losing"

never know they might learn something and make a few things better..........

ooops sorry i forgot the Status Que.......Mai Chop? Mai Tong Pood!!!!!

  5. Economics indeed. My brother in law is a Thai Copper of 13 years. He still only earns 10,000 Baht a month. Why would he worry about the case of the Murdered Dane when he could be looking at his stocks on the net which earn him Triple that of his wage each month.............

I agree with the idea of a Danish consular official being sent over. Absolute bullshit the way things like this are handled in this country. theyll just use the old mai pen rai cop out yet again.

Classic example of the way an overworked, under resourced, underpaid police force react to things.

    condolences to family and freinds

  6. The fooling the "ghost that steals babies" (Is that a nickname?) is the reason for the nicknames. Another interesting one is Surnames in Thailand. Apparently, there was no such thing until the 1920s!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any info on the history reasons etc for this would be good.???

My step son is nicknamed BEER he drank beer as a kid and enjoyed it. My daughter is nicknamed Kwan, she was born in the wetseason. My son is nicknamed JAY because I like the name JAY.

I dont think I have a formal? Nickname......... I get SOM NOM NAAA quite a bit tho........

  7. try not to overstay. i had 4 days overstay on a type O non immigrant, payed the fine, left, came back and payed 1800THB for a 60 day TRANSIT VISA. Worked at Maisai. Dunno about elsewhere. I know of heaps of people getting 3 or 4 60 day transit visas on top of eachother after their O types have expired and theyve used up the 3 visas on arrivals. 1 guy i know in Chiang mai has stayed 10 months on Transits. As ive said before, so long as your paying its usually ok.

  8. Miguels? Good? Give me a break.............

dont believe what the reviews say i found it terrible

Why Salsa Kitchen in Chiang Mais "Hells half acre" on Rathvithi Rd has not even been mentioned in this forum is beyond control.......

Dukes has been replaced by Salsa Kitchen as the mexican night king.

  9. Very Interesting thread. Im not sure about the thai law etc regarding babies born to Foreign parents within thailand. I know if the situation occurs in Australia, so long as the parents fullfil visa/residency requirements the child can be considered an Australian citizen after some paper work is completed. And providing the parents have a long term and ongoing relationship with Australia.

I wonder if the same is true of Thailand? I dont think I'd bet my house on it.... However, after the births of my two children (Born Chiang Mai, Thai Mother, Australian Father, Duel citizenship/passport holders. ) The procedure was 1. Sort paperwork with Hospital. 2. Sort hospitals papers with Birth Certificate office and obtain birth certificate. 3. Take birth certificate to the Housing/residency office and register the baby at an address. The 3rd step, i believe, is the social security procedure. What i mean is this registry begins the life of my babies as Thai, Chiang Maiers, knows their age, knows their addresses etc etc and im pretty sure this is the means of government identification until 15 years when an ID card is issued.

What i am getting at is................... Can a Baby born to Foreign parents in Thailand gain Thai citizenship?

Surely if They can obtain a Thai passport they are considered Thai Nationals??? And if they can be registered at the housing registry, surely they are Thai Nationals anyway and dont require a passport or a Visa to stay here??

love to know the ins and outs of this situation, especially in this country.........

  10. I cant really comment on a same sex relationship point of veiw, or an interdependancy visa. However since I have a thai GF of 4 years and 2 young children with said partner, all whom travel to an from Australia/thailand regularly i can offer a little advice.

Definatly apply for visa in thailand. Much Quicker, and Australian Immigration DEFINATLY prefer it this way. If you have a no further stay, you have no choice in the matter. A bridging visa? I doubt is possible unless you have a really really good reason not to leave. DO NOT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCES OVERSTAY FOR ANY REASON. You may get away with Hospitalisation as an excuse. An overstay is a massive black mark againts your name. As Mighty Mouse said Dont rush the process and follow instructions to the letter. Gather every miniscule peice of evidence you think is relevant and be sure not to forget any of the required paper work. Forgetting mandatory stuff will see your application posted back to you and proberly not taken seriously upon second veiwing.

I think the best advice I can give (its helped me immensly ie: quick application, no questions asked) Is to SHOW THEM THE MONEY! Unfortunate as this is in the circumstance of visas, as visa generally have some sort of emotional, human faces to them, The immigration laws in aussie dont see these sides of things.

The law in essence requires that you prove you will not in anyway or form, Burden the Australian Federal Government during your stay. And that you become a productive citizen if that eventuates. They dont want to pay for you if you are Ill. They dont want to pay if you need deporting. They dont want to pay for you to live or infact die. They want to see that in any circumstance you have enough Cash in the bank or are adequatly insured to pay your way. This means EVERYTHING.

I am lucky enough to have a great Friend(usually has to be a aussie resident i think) that has an outstanding bank account!!!! He legally (stat dec) gauruntees my GFs visa on every application. He does this by writing a formal invitation and a formal garuntee that he is reponsible for any burden she may cause the govt during her stay. These letters and a copy of his bank accounts attached to our visa applications work wonders.

My GF is convinced its because we have 2 children and a long standing relationship (which certaintly helps) However after some of the rows ive had with centrelink and medicare regarding my childrens (Australian citizens by descent) residency status, Im convinced all the govt in aussie is watching is the bottom line..

    good luck
