  1. A few thoughts:

    1. It's a NON-ELECTED government.

    2. The high road would be to call an election. Which they know they will lose. (because the majority of the population will not support them). Where I come from it's called democracy.

    3. The majority of the populace (outside of Bangkok) received a taste of the national tax base for the FIRST TIME in decades (under Thaksin) and whether they are paid to vote or not they will support those (like they have done 3 times) who have seen fit to redistribute the tax base from centralist Bangkok to the rest of the country.

    4. While the fear mongers (The Nation/Thai Visa/George keep pushing the Thaksin Evil Empire agenda it's got nothing to do with Thaksin. It's way beyond that, it's a paradigm shift that is not turning back.

People who have had no representation under the Democrats (ever) found somebody who (for what ever reason you need to think ) decided to change the game. The balance of power shifted from Bangkok to the rest of the country.

The question is: Will the next democratic election results be respected by everybody or will the wealthy minority in Bangkok (and?) with the assistance of the military once again torpedo the wishes of the electorate.

My hope is we can only look beyond the Thaksin hysteria cultivated by those with a self interest and hope for a true democratic solution which will be allowed to play out by the military and the (?).

Well said, many points which seem to of been forgotten, most probably by those residing in their 'all paid for' high rise sukhumvit condo's

  2. This is so sad, to see a country like Thailand self destructing. I have been a visitor to Thailand for many years, even resided there for a while, I have always praised and promoted the country amongst friends and family.

Thaksin may not of been the most honest PM but it was certainly a far safer and pleasant place to visit when he was around.

I know I wont be visiting Thailand again, or at least until they can sort themselves out and decide what they want, and I am sure I am not the only one thinking along these lines.

So this year it will be Vietnam or Cambodia for holiday, my wife's suggestion, and she is Thai, she does not even want to visit even all her family are there.

farangUK - pray tell me what the police and authorities did when the International Airport was under siege, effectively bringing the country to a standstill and stranding thousands of people????

  3. Its so sad to of watched Thailand self destructing over the last few months and now it is becoming a laughing stock. We all know how wonderful the Thai police are, but their current display of incompetency really does go beyond belief.

I personally believe the damage that has been caused by these 'Terrorists'/'Insurgents' ( I use these words because thats what they would be called in any another country ) will have a long lasting effect on Thailand's economy and tourism.

I was on the understanding that the current government was elected democratically, maybe the stories of them being a puppet government for Thaksin to control from outside are true, but at least if we look back at the time when Thaksin was in power Thailand seemed to be a much more stable place, and more inviting for both business and tourist even if he wasnt the straightest PM in power, lets face it who wants to go there now?

Do the Thai people really want a Democracy, or even understand what it is?

  5. Hi, just want to drop a few lines and tell of a recent visa run to Aranyaprathet, mosy guys will probably know this anyway. It didnt affect me because i got type O and was just doing a 90 renewal, which was quite painless and swift after crossing the right palms with silver, seems Cambodian police are like brothers in arms. But it seems if you dont have a visa of any kind and are looking to do a 30 day visa on arrival run then make sure you have a flight ticket to prove you onward travel plans, otherwise its a no go, 2 guys got turned away, both had to purchase tickets from a travel agent at the border, cost 3500 baht, Penang return. Signs are all over the Thai immigration post stating that until further review of the visa rules this ruling will be enforced.

It certainly seems they dont want people here to stay, more and more regs each month to make it more and more difficult for honest people to stay. I was coming here for over 5 years as a tourist, never any problems. but after only 4 months living here i think its time to go back to being a tourist. I guess living here is not for everyone, too much bull and red tape for my liking. LOS only if you are police or immigration official lol

  6. Hi All

I have a Non Imigrant Type O Multi entry which i got by virture of marriage, i applied for the visa in the Thai Embassy in U.A.E. whee i was working at the time, since then my wife has returned to Thailand and i will follow in the very near future as i wish to work there.

From reading this forum i understand i would be able to get a work permit with this type of visa but my visa has 'Emplyment Prohibited' typed on it.

Could enyone tell me if this would affect me getting a work permit, or if there are any other limitations which might come into force.

    Thanks in advance
