Importing through DHL will be prohibitively expensive and difficult -- if possible at all. Please see pinned topic on this. You will have to get an FDA import license and while a few (very, very few) people have managed to do this, all the cases I know of involved drugs not available in Thailand.  It is questionable whether you could do this for a drug that is available here and even if you did, by the time the courier costs ,(inclusive of processing the license application etc) are factored in, cost would likely exceed buying the medication in Thailand.

While it is technically illegal to bring in medication by mail without an FDA license, in practice customs usually (not always, but usually) will let through small quantities if sent by regular mail rather than a courier. (Using a courier guarantees problems, delays and demand for FDA license).

There is certainly no reason at all to do this for Plavix since there are locally made generic equivalents that can be inexpensively bought at a pharmacy without a prescription. Apolets is one common brand name.

For the rest of your medications, please list what they are and I will tell you if there are local brands.

In thinking about moving to Thailand,  please do not think of the cost of your current medications as the only consideration in terms of health care. Even if you retain a UK address and  registration with a GP under NHS, you need to consider how you would pay for medical care in case of emergency hospitalization. With pre-existing  heart condition you will not be able to get health insurance so unless you already have a policy that will cover you in Thailand, you will have to self pay. A major accident, stroke, heart attack etc can easily cost 3-5 million baht in a private hospital and 1 million in a government hospital (worst case scenarios i.e. prolonged ICU stay, specialized surgery etc-- but worst case is what you should plan for).

Thanks very much for your comments.

As asked I am also taking:

    Pantoprazole 40 mg

    Atorvastatin 80 mg

    Ezetimibe 10 mg

  2. I have medication for my heart and was wondering if anyone uses DHL or similar for importing their meds to Thailand?

When I lived in Bangkok before the meds were very expensive. My Thai spouse and myself will be returning back to Bangkok to live and Plavix is the most expensive medication I have, so can I have this sent by DHL every 3 or 6 months? I assume I will need a Thai doctors certificate confirming I have a heart condition, but is there anything else required by customs please?

  3. I have a single entry 90 day O visa based on marriage. My question is will I require an onward flight ticket from Bangkok and do I have to show this at the departure airport before flying to Thailand?

I have been told two stories.

1., Only need single ticket from current country to Thailand.

    2. Require to show airline desk at departure country you have an onward ticket from Thailand to another country.

    Cheers in advance.

  4. I will be applying for my No O visa based on marriage on 17 Nov 2016 from Penang. I currently work here and my employment pass (EP) will be cancelled at the end of November.

As I do not know my final date to depart the country due to tax clearance and EP cancellation can I just put an educated guess date on the Visa application form or do I have to show my actual flight ticket?

    Thanks in advance

He apparently is asking about getting a re-entry permit for the 90 days he will get from a single entry non-o visa. It certainly will not be valid for a year.

A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht and a multiple is 3800 baht.

    Thanks Ubonjoe. Fully understand. Cheers

You need a multi entry visa if you wish to re-enter Thailand during the 1 year validity of the non-immigrant O visa. With a single entry visa you will only be allowed to enter Thailand one time. If you leave Thailand you will have to apply for a new visa to get back in unless you apply for a re-entry permit from your local immigration office at a cost of 1900 baht.

Thanks very much. I will just apply for a re-entry permit once in Thailand.

  7. I have tried to find information on other posts but can not find anything that answers my question.

I will be conducting a short term business contract in Papua New Guinea (PNG) with a view to extending if both parties agree at the 4 month point.

The company in PNG e-mailed me my e-ticket. It is only a one way ticket. It is issued by a travel company and the flight is from Bangkok to Singapore (Thai Airways) and then to Port Moresby PNG by Air Niugini.

I have been informed as I am from the UK I will be met at the airport in PNG and will complete a single entry business visa on arrival.

My question is will the issued ONE WAY TICKET be accepted at the airport (Swampy)? As I do not officially have my business visa yet so am a little concerned I will not be allowed to fly.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

If I want to change my extension of stay based on marriage to an extension of stay based on retirement how do I do this and what documents would I need to provide at immigration for this please?

I assume it would be one visit only and the extension would stamped the same day?

    Cheers.

    You would need

    1 Application form

    2.Passport photo

    3 Passport.

4 Usual copies of Passport, visa, most recent extension stamp and departure card.

    5. Letter from the bank confirming the 800K together with the bank book. (balance in bok must equal that stated in the letter.

    6. Proof of address

    7. 1900 Bht !

You will receive the extension on the same day that it is applied for.

May be best to take your wife as immigration may wish to assure themselves she understands the change!

    Thank you very much nzexpat.

  9. I agree the extension based upon marriage is not an option you have.

You could change to an extension based upon retirement if you can prove 65k baht income or have 800k baht in the bank for 3 months.

Or you could make a trip to Savannakhet and get a multiple entry non-o based upon marriage that would give you 90 day entries for a year. That way you would be able to get a non-o entry you could then extend.

    Thanks ubonjoe.

I have over 800k in my Thai bank account but have made withdrawals within the last 3 months but the balance has not gone below 800k so will this be ok to change to an extension based on retirement?

  11. I am after some advice here regarding my situation. I am currently on an extension of stay based on marriage which is due for renewal on the 6th March 2015. I do not work in Thailand. I have accepted an overseas contract for initially 4 months starting approximately 1st March pending WP/Visa approval. I can also extend the contract to 12 months if both parties agree at the 4 month point. If I depart before the 6th March I will lose my extension of stay so when I return in 4 months (if I return)I would have to come in on a 30 day stamp or other visa I take it? If I try to renew my extension of stay early I would only get a 30 day stamp "Application of stay is under consideration" so this would not be viable due to time restraint as I would have to report back to immigration 30 days later for final extension stamp. Any suggestions or do I just go through the process again for an O Visa based on marriage.(I am over 50 and a British National) Cheers.
