  1. everything this tsunami is hitting is in the northern Pacific Rim; north of the 26 parallel; there is no imminent danger to anywhere in Thailand. Maybe Thai officials should think about organizing aid for the countries that are being affected instead of trying to make it about them (probably see a cash angle in there somewhere). Sincere condolences to the families that have lost loved ones in this tragedy.

  2. Most of the gripes are here are minuscule in comparison to other International Airports around the world; the walk is certainly a lot less than Dubai (not to mention the 40 minute bus ride) and you can get a meal in BIA for the price of a packet of chewing gum at London Heathrow. The only gripe i would have is the attitude of certain members of the security check staff after exiting through immigration; but i guess that's the same everywhere. Taxi's i cant comment on as I have a driver, as for Immigration queues; has everyone forgotten what Don Mueng was like??? It may also be worth noting that if you have an Immigrant B or O Visa and speak basic Thai; you can use the Thai National immigration points which are always empty :)

  3. What you have just described is typical of Pattaya; Samui; Pha Ngaan and Phuket; basically where the thais that live there are mostly not from there; simply scumbags drawn to those areas due to the opportunity to extort from tourists any opportunity they get. Yes the majority of Thais do hate Farangs in those areas because the majority of farangs they see are either sex tourists, pothead backpackers or groups of young lads on the piss who are generally not too bothered about cultural aspects etc. Don't give up on Thailand; just move away from Pattaya buddy

  4. I have the misfortune to live in Jomtien. I can leave? No, I can't. The condo I own represents most of my assets and until I sell it, which I'm trying to do, I'm stuck here.

Today 22 Aug. 2010, an average day in Pattaya:-

9.00am rang Fascino Pharmacy Central Pattaya to ask if they stocked a drug an ill friend required. They did stock it but were out of it and offered to order it. I asked if their N. Pattaya branch would have it and they said probably it did. I rang there and got a gentleman who interrupted me before I'd finished my question with "No have." I told him their Central P. branch did stock it. I spelt the name of the drug for him using the British A phonetic alphabet. This proved too much for him. Eventually he got the name of the drug (I think) and he told me to hold on. He turned on the music and left me holding. After 4/5 mins I hung up. That shop has 4 tel. numbers and I rang all four and got no reply with several attempts.

Fortunately I did get the drug in a Jomtien pharmacy. The man who needed it is a farang in his 80's and suffers from panic attacks.

At 10.00am I ventured out and took a baht bus to the Continental Bakery. When I got off I paid the driver on the driver's side. He threw a rage yelling that I had to pay him on the other side and then snatched the money out of my hand.

I ordered breakfast in the Continental Bakery stressing that I would like the bacon well done, dry (heng heng). It is usually a problem getting crispy bacon here. Sure enough it arrived done Thai style i.e. lightly cooked. I pointed this out and the staff started a loud conversation among themselves, punctuated with laughter. I was informed it was well done.

Next I went to Tesco S. Pattaya to do some shopping and afterwards stopped at the open market nearby. I then took a baht bus which stopped at the Thepprasit/Thappraya junction. The driver ordered me out. As I paid him I asked if he wasn't going to Jomtien. He snarled that I had to take another baht bus in Thappraya road. He then turned left into Thappraya road and headed towards Jomtien. (I have done this route before. If there are Thais on board you do not get dumped out at the junction.)

I am now at home and thankfully have no need to have to face the gratuitous nastiness that is the daily lot of farangs in Pattaya. I will however have to endure the screeching from the bars that have sprouted around the condo building since I bought the unit 20 years ago.

I am assured by a Thai business woman that the vast majority of Thais "hate" farangs.

My advice to anyone who isn't stuck here, as I am, is to leave, and to those thinking of coming here, don't.

  6. i am moving to bbk in a couple of months. can anyone advise me about good neighbourhoods to live in or bad ones to avoid?

i'm thinking of the area(s) from lumpini round the mrt route to queen sirikit. khlong toey etc.. maybe ekamai or as far as on nut. generally on the east side of town but avoiding sukhumvit. in the 5,000 6,000 month range.

    cheers

there are not really good and bad areas such as you would find in the inner cities like in UK or the States; only rich and poor. For 5 - 6k THB a month you can expect very meagre accomodation; you need to be paying 12,000 plus for anything suitable for a farang really. The nearer the skytrain the more expensive. If you dont need to live in the city then look into Lat Phrao for cheaper accom.

  7. Dec 23 picked for Election Day

BANGKOK: -- The prime minister and the Election Commission agreed Monday to hold the next election on December 23.

EC Chairman Apichart Sukkhakhanont said Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and the EC reached a common stand that Dec 23 would be the best timing for holding the poll.

    -- The Nation 2007-08-27

does this mean we will see more "extra fireworks" around the city on New Years Eve when they are not happy with the result? (like we did last year)

  8. Hi all,

I've got the opportunity of a job up north developing and selling property. Have heard on here before to get a visa you need a degree and police check, but from people I have spoken to these paticular rules are only for teachers.

Does this mean that I can obtain a Non Imm B visa by producing a letter of employment / contract + company registration docs to the Thai embassy? Is there anything else they would require for this line of work?

My job my also entails trips to Laos and Cambodia so my employees would prefer me to get a one year multiple entry as paying the fees for re-entry permits could add up to be expensive. Can I obtain a multiple from Laos / Malaysia or Vietnam or would I need to return to UK for that?

Dare say this question has been asked a million times on this forum but would apreciate any help you can offer.

    Cheers

mate you need to go to UK (assuming you are a brit) with a cover letter from your employer, their registration and the company shareholder info the first time (Thai Embassy in Hull are the most receptive, (London Consul can be real pricks)) they will issue you a 1 year multiple entry non Immigrant B Visa. You then need to get the one year Thai Visa and a work permit through your company. You can then extend this visa each year without leaving Thailand as long as you can produce the right documents on renewal

This may have changed since I last did it so double check this, Hope this helps
