  1. Ethernet will work OK anyway, because everything plugged in should get an IP address automagically.

I'd take it to the True shop and get someone to configure it front of you so you can see and write down the credentials.

Thank's very much Chicog, shall I tell you... no I will not...whistling.gif

(It is so obvious I had not thought about that xsick.gif.pagespeed.ic.iUTh4LcMoY.webp ashamed )

Did you try the password as posted by geordieman above?

I too have the Cisco cable router, and indeed the password is not as in the cisco manual (also tried that one first), but changed by the True people to admin/password.

I'm also not sure on how much damage you can do by doing a full reset. I know True authenticates your modem through the MAC address and not through PPoE settings (like ADSL uses), so it's very possible the thing would still connect to the internet AND be defaulted to the standard passwords.

Failure would however require the assistance of the true technicians. Only to be risked if you're ready to go see them anyway!

  2. Quite nice late summer though at the moment, currently an agreeable 23 C...expected to get closer to 30 C in the next few days.

Yeah, so very true, most people who "have been" in Belgium actually simply passed trough on the way to some other European country!

Not hard to do in a country so small, that driving in whatever direction you choose for over 3 hours (and likely a lot less) will see you out of the country (280 km long by 150 km wide) laugh.png

  3. Licenses for music are rather easy.

For Western music the main company is : http://www.mpcmusic.co.th/en/index.php?menu=

For TV, they do not have a license per se. Basically you need to get a special subscription with a content provider, for public showing.

The main player at the moment is CTH, due to them carrying all the EPL games.

It has been reported that prices depend on the size of your screens, with most big flatscreens coming in at 3,500 Baht/month, and a projector at 5,000 Baht/month (instead of the 899/month for home viewing).

Call them directly for more info.

Truevisions has similar commercial subscriptions. Although True never made a problem installing a set in a commercial place on a home subscription!

It seems CTH is more pro-active, in refusing to do installations in public places unless the proper commercial package is subscribed to!

They are probably trying to maximize revenue, trying to recoup their huge investment in the EPL rights!

Also stands to reason that sometime in the future they will start to actively find out places showing the EPL through different sources then their feeds.

  4. Welcome to the lovely world of the Belgian foreign diplomatic posts smile.png

You really have to squeeze the info out of them, either by e-mail or in person. Very hard to find out something over the phone.

The info on their website is useless, a lot of it is out of date, so relying on that would probably set you up for lots of unwelcome surprises.

About 5 months ago I checked the website for more info on marriage and the required documents. One item was that Belgians living in Thailand need to have a yellow house book (Tabien Baan). Thinking this is rather odd (not that many foreigners are registered in a yellow housebook, and it's not exactly an easy procedure either unless owning a condo).

So I wrote an e-mail, and I did receive a reply within 2 working days, stating that I "correctly noticed the info on the website needs to be updated". They wrote it will happen "very soon". Almost 6 months later the wrong info is still there for all to mislead!

They did immediately inform me of the proper requirements though, so I guess you'll be informed per email on the proper possibilities soon.

  5. If you withdraw in the same province as where your account was opened, it will be free.

Anywhere else in Thailand, you'll pay.

I guess it will slowly get better, Bangkok bank for example lowered the fees for inter province transfers done by atm or online banking signifficantly, with the first 5 transactions every month totally free.

    Other banks tend to follow!

My guess is online transactions becoming free or very cheap in the near future, with transactions in branch by teller remaining expensive. Much I guess it is now in the West.

  6. Hi I tried a few searches on my topic but I was spending to much time trying to find a answer ,Sorry

I have a kasikornbank  savings account. I originaly open in Sakon Nakhorn with 14,000 bht

Today I deposited 400,000 bht into my savings account in Udon Thaini  I noticed they charged me a 420 bht fee. I asked why!!

the customer relation girl said it was a commission. Can anybody tell me without clowning around why they charge

a fee to use my money.

    Thank You

Clearly found on the websites of most if not all Thai banks.

Out of province transactions, online, atm or at the counter incur fees.

Thailand today is still a country where it is actually cheaper to withdraw a big heap of cash, walk over to a different branch and do a deposit, compared to doing an online transaction from behind your computer with no labor/staff of either bank involved!

  7. well,

i understand all the theories, and rules

    but

    my reality is:

in the past 12 yrs here all (without exception) police who stopped me accepted my (from EU country, non-international) driving licence for car...moreover they accepted it driving my 110cc scooter as well.

when fined, only for such like wrong turn, going up on flyover with bike, or speeding.

never ever bothered with the licence being non-thai, non-international, or non-bike.

maybe it is only me, but as mentioned, it is my reality as is.

All very good and well, until you have a serious accident with injuries and/or deaths, are in the fault, and you find yourself without any insurance cover due to lack of license.

You risk serious jail time and financial ruin only because of the lack of a relatively easy to obtain license.

Along with the moral issue of maybe not being able to compensate an innocent victim.

  8. Most shops for some reason slap a massive profit margin on pool pumps, especially Hayward.

Obviously the exchange rate at the moment is not helping, having gone up substantially in the last few months.

Try to contact the distributors in Bangkok directly, they usually don't mind selling directly and transport cheaply throughout Thailand.

"Most shops for some reason slap a massive profit margin on pool pumps" and almost everything else imported,,,,,

The 50hz thing is hour biggest hurdle..

Not really. Hayward has massive production of 50Hz pumps, pretty much their complete export series is 50 Hz...
There are a fair bit more countries in the world running 50 Hz then there are running 60!

  9. Meh...

Just got caught turning left at a junction when the traffic light was red.

I now know what "turn left waiting light" means smile.png

I kind of wonder what is wrong with the signs on Sukhumvit, stating "On red wait here". I would think they get the point across just fine, the ones used in Pattaya are not totally clear methinks biggrin.png

And I am wondering if any copper out there realizes, that anybody turning left, at any time, is breaking the law!

Because at all those junctions, where they recently abolished turning left when the lights are red, the green lights are actually an arrow up (drive straight) and an arrow to the right (turn right).

Unless they either include a green arrow to the left, or simply replace all the greens arrows with a full (round) green light, you are at no time allowed to turn left. Ever.

At least it was a quiet day at soi 9 to go pay, as I had a bloody big bag with groceries with me, including chilled meats, as I just came from Friendship supermarket...

  11. Found a Google maps with the E85 stations in Thailand. Handy if you have an E85 capable car!

But before rushing out, check following links on fuel economy:

    http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/e85-vs-gasoline-comparison-test.html

    http://www.cars.com/go/advice/Story.jsp?section=fuel&subject=fuelAlt&story=e85

It's a fact that E85 contains 27% less energy compared to regular petrol, and this seems to jibe very close with the consumption figures in the tests.

In Thailand you'll still end up ahead, but instead of the current 23.18 Baht/litre, you'll end up paying 30 Baht after adjusting for the increased consumption. Still not bad, but nowhere near as spectacular as many people think it is!

  12. Eventhough they seem to be based in Rayong (Map Tha Phut), which is pretty close to Pattaya, I can't say I've ever seen one of their petrol stations.

And they apparently have around 80 stations nationwide, that's a tad over 1 per province smile.png

    ----edit----

Ok, found the list for East Thailand, and the closest station they have to Pattaya is in Sattahip.

Bit of a detour to go fill up!

    http://www.pumppure.com/html-th/pump/east.html

And for those curious in the other regions in Thailand:

    http://www.pumppure.com/html-th/pump/index.php

Google translate does a pretty good job of translating the addresses

  13. Cellphone apps to track cellphones via GPS are not accurate, they will report the nearest cell tower.

Better to get a dedicated GPS.

    Not true at all.

They might resort to using cell towers when no gps reception (inside buildings), but the name of the app says it all, gps tracker, meaning it uses the built in GPS receiver of your phone.

Which is also why I warned on the battery life, having the gps receiver on constantly, along with the constant 3G connection needed to update location every few seconds empties your battery in no time.

But when I trialled such an app, accuracy when outdoors is a few meters!

  14. A genuine licence for practically all the music you are likely to play would be 10,000 b per year for most places mentioned here. If you're not playing Thai music you're almost certainly covered. if you look at the FAQ page you can see that playing any music in public, including from a radio or TV requires a licence. BTW, not playing or having Thai music in the bar/restaurant would also get rid of these guys because they are invariably pretending to represent a company that only has rights to Thai artists.

    http://www.mpcmusic.co.th/en/index.php?menu=tariff

On the Thai music, not necessarily so. In Pattaya a while ago, a group purportedly representing KT Publishing, one of the 4 copyright owners of foreign music (for a whopping 65 songs in their case, the big majority is owned by MPCmusic), went round the Farang bars with the same scam.

The majority were frightened into paying eventhough they likely did not even own any of those 65 songs...

  15. I thought the CM police assured us this problem group had left town???? Is this a new crew or is this the old crew with a new haircut?? If its the latter, they laid low for a few weeks and go back into their chosen profession, scamming.

Certainly gives you faith in the system that was intended to protect the honest people of the country. Not

Yeah , makes you wonder. When they take from honest people just trying to suport there familiy in a legal manor . No wonder so many thai's end up selling yaba and ice . It's much more lucrative than selling pati and somtam and spirits where you have overhead .

Two of the people have been identified The fat girl from Grammy and The English speaking well dressed Thai who organized the scam. I was able to get the licence numbers from two of the autos used as well, just have to find someone to run the plates for identification.

None of this makes any sense.

6 people turn up unannounced at a business. What sort of business is it? A bar, a restaurant or what? Who actually owns it?

They walk into a kitchen and steal a laptop computer. Then these people who refuse to show any identification or clarification of whom and what they represent, take the owner to a police station, which in my book, unless officially arrested and have the powers to arrest, amounts to kidnapping.

Meanwhile while at the police station the police do nothing, except threaten to throw the so-called female owner in jail, and the said woman asks for 25000 baht (for god knows what?) and the alleged owner pays without question and without acquiring a receipt. Doesn’t even make a request for a lawyer to be present.

The OP alleges that the owner, who was sitting alone, no customers in the shop of whatever business this is, had to deal with it. But these people said; THEY were illegally playing music licensed by Grammy, according to the OP`s statement? Who are THEY? And what is the OP`s part in this? Because the OP stated that he could not obtain any identification from these people, which means he must have been on the scene. So how could the owner have been alone with no customers in the shop, unless the owner and the OP are one of the same or he was there at the time? If the OP was on the scene, in what capacity was he there for? And why is he involved?

The police are alleged to have threatened to throw the owner (whoever the real owner is?) in jail. Throw into jail for what, why and on whose authority?

So to place all this into perspective, 6 thugs walk into a business premises, steal a computer, kidnap the owner who was allegedly alone and then taken to a police station, threatened with instant jail if she does not pay 25000 baht to some unknown woman who has no evidence that a criminal act has been committed, and pays without having a lawyer present, without receiving a receipt and nothing is officially recorded.

If I were a legitimate business owner and had not committed any offence, and 6 people walked in, stole my computer and tried to take me away somewhere with them, I would be calling the police saying that I am under attack from unknown intruders or even put up a hell of a struggle before I went off with them. Anybody in their right minds would do the same if suddenly finding themselves in that situation, unless there is something extremely dodgy going on.

Sorry, but I really can’t swallow this story.

The OP does paint a sordid picture of the BiB and I simply don`t believe it. Perhaps these so-called music police are the genuine article and the said business owner (will the real owner stand up please?) really did commit an offence, and if this business has a farang financial backer but not in name, than he has no authority or power to officially represent the business. THIS IS THE LAW. If this is the case? Anyone or certain people that take matters into their own hands and try to bypass going via official channels to have this sorted, will find themselves in a lot of trouble, well in the do dars right over their heads.

If you seriously believe that publishing a video on Utube is going to scare these people off and solve the problem, than you’re living in cloud cuckoo land. Plus keeping in mind Thailand`s strict defamation laws, so you had better have your facts right before you upload any videos.

My advice is; first get your house in order, then hold a meeting with the police by appointment and negotiate how to solve this problem with them. You will be pleasantly surprised how accommodating and helpful the police can be if the correct procedures are followed. Otherwise these so-called business owners will always be ripe for intimidation and extortion. And quite frankly, I have no sympathies at all.

May the force be with you.

Unfortunately it happens exactly like you describe again and again, with Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai being the preferred playgrounds of those thugs.

In general, they know they can get away with a lot because:

    1) Thai people are generally very bad at standing up against any (perceived) authority.

    2) They target places where the chance is high that management is not clued up in legal mumbo jumbo. Meaning often wives of foreigners (where they know the foreigner can be dangerous to them but is not allowed to meddle due to lack of work permit), smallish karaoke's, massage places etc. So they prey on the weak, both their own and on foreigners.

    2) Once they get them into a police station, have 10's of thousands worth of equipment confiscated, along with the threat of jail time, money usually will be produced. Pay the BiB their share, and it's big time payday again.

  16. Been looking into this and found some very useful websites, especially

    http://www.satellite-calculations.com/

It looks as though the setup I propose to do (150 cm dish and high gain LNB) according to the calculators on the website above will have too much signal for the STB but wanting to make sure I minimize the chance of losing signal from rain fade I was thinking that I will keep the original CTH dish and have the 150cm dish both going through a disecq switch. In fact 3 dish's connected, original CTH, 150cm dish and original True dish.

The question I have is that will I be able to use the 2 dishes with the one CTH STB or does disecq only work to choose the one dish per STB

With a disecq switch you can make your receiver choose between many dishes.

Probably will need a bit creative thinking to set your box up.

You'll likely need to set up two "bouquets", each bouquet looking at a different dish.

In a normal situation, one bouquet would be the channels from one satellite (e.g. CTH), and the other bouquet the channels from another satellite (e.g.Truevisions)

In your situation, both bouquets will have the same transponders programmed, so you'll end up with two bouquets with identical channels, one "rainy weather" bouquet and one "good weather" bouquet.

  17. Apparently, they do need full search warrant signed by a court to be allowed to search your premises.

From the website of the department of intellectual property:

LEGAL RIGHTS OF BUSINESS OPERATORS printButton.png emailButton.png The legal rights of the business operators are as follow:
    (1) In cases of criminal charges, the business operator has the legal right to request the examination of various documents relating to any actions which may affect his/her rights and freedom.
    (2) The search of public places must obtain an order or a warrant from the court to be shown prior to the search.
    (3) The evidence in the copyright violation cases which are seized or withhold must be tools or equipments used in the violation only, such as computers to record the pirated songs.
    (4) In cases of becoming an offender, the rights are as follow;
    a. Rights to meet and consult the to-be-attorney one on one
    b. Rights to receive visits as appropriate
    c. Rights to receive medical care expeditiously for sick symptoms
    d. Rights to know the allegation on the violated actions as every person is equal under the law and is equally protected under law without discrimination.
    (5) The bail for the offender must be accompanied by guarantees, such as land title, property, cash, or government officials with C6 ranking or above. In this respect, the Cabinet has decided, on 1 July 2003, that all government officials are to be prohibited from bailing any offenders in intellectual property cases.

    In English :http://www.ipthailand.go.th/ipthailand/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=957&Itemid=229〈=en

    In Thai: http://www.ipthailand.go.th/ipthailand/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=957&Itemid=229〈=th

Print out the Thai version, highlight point 2, and stick under their nose, along with having the knowledge of all the other things required. They will not have a search warrant, until they have they are not allowed to remove any of your equipment.

Call the cops. Really! Or even better, a friendly journalist willing to come over immediately to witness the raid!

  18. In general, you can get busted for breaching copyright laws. But to get legally caught, it will have to happen following the law. The scammers don't even come near the legal procedure of busting a place for copyright infringements.

There are a few things very early in the busting process you (or your Thai staff) have to check, which will weed out the scammers in no time. Unfortunately it'll have to be a strong hearted person to do this, a person not intimidated by the scare tactics used by the scammers. Preferably backed up by witnesses or a decent quality CCTV system WITH sound recording. Or a video camera/ mobile phone camera recording their actions.

To be a legal bust, below procedure needed to be followed:

    - The copyright owner has to have filed a complaint with the police (or can do it on the spot if police is present during the bust).

    - The person filing the complaint has to be properly authorized by the copyright owner. Basically meaning that the company (MPC music for example) needs to give a Power Of Attorney to somebody (usually an employee) to be allowed to file a complain. So the POA has to be there along with the person filing the complaint (with ID of course). The POA cannot be expired!

    - The complaint needs a specific song/author of which it is claimed copyrights are being breached.

    - There must be a police officer taking part in the apprehension and accusation.

So in short they immediately on the spot have to tell you which company they work for, exactly which song it is you have been playing of which they own the rights, and they have to back it up with a proper POA and the Identification papers of the person authorized on this POA to do the bust.

  19. Would this (Having a licence) also apply if you have a smart TV with internet connection at a shop? Interesting..... as you could log onto You Tube and play music videos on the TV.

As one has to pay a fee to the satellite provider or internet provider then surely (?) you should be ok. Or is the argument going to be that the fee you pay is for private household and not commercial (Public) viewing?

But as has been said....I too smell a scam

Your internet provider does not include any license fees. You are not allowed to play anything in a public place without having a proper license for it.

The exception is if you have a subscription with a satellite or cable TV provider specifically for use in Public places.

Truevisons always had commercial/public licensing fees (mostly used in big hotels and hospitals), but for some reason never minded installing systems in bars and restaurants with a simple household subscription!

The new kid on the block, CTH, which carries the EPL for the next 3 years, will not install their systems in a public place, unless you take a subscription for public showing. Prices range from 1500 Baht for a screen under 32" size, up to 5,000 Baht/month for a projector. So a fair bit more expensive then the "home" subscription.
