  1. It was installed this morning. The 2 chaps took about 3 hours to complete the process...cable in from the soi and then to connect up to the old satellite cable in the house after removing the dish.

  2. After reading the above posts I gave them a call. I live in the Ladprao area and they are expanding the cable system in this area since they cannot compete with TOT's phone lines so the cable allows them to provide HD TV and the Higher speed internet (up to the 100Mb).

All this rain has caused many signal interruptions so I decided to switch over. That was 2 weeks ago and now I am enjoying free HD for the next 4 months. They give you the new HD boxes even if you have the old CRT TVs (I have one of both). There are settings to adjust for both. Sadly the PVR is not working yet; new software will be added 'soon'. You cannot record either or use the On Demand service. Again, it will be 'sometime soon.'

There is a user manual in Thai and English and there is an HDMI cable supplied with each of the Samsung units. The installation crew had left it on Thai but a call to True and I was guided through what to do in a very clear and concise manner. The talked me through all the different video and audio settings. Excellent service.

The HD channels look and sound wonderful and it's great to watch football on my 46' screen without the players turning into blurs or split into lines as they run. And to also see the full picture! Sadly the old channels are just the same visually but the sound quality is definitely better. Annoyingly you cannot choose wide zoom viewing option only a full stretch option.

Now, can I persuade myself to sign up for the HD channels or try the 100Mb internet package...

  3. Cruised around as suggested and found diagnostics.

    DSL Lin Status:

    noise margin upstream: 6 db

    output power downstream: 16 db

    attenuation upstream: 2 db

    noise margin downstream: 34 db

    output power upstream: 4 db

    attenuation downstream: 7 db

No idea if this is good or bad but thanks for the advice and any guidance in translating the above.

  4. Thanks Pib,

yes, I did test local (Singapore) for the ping. I couldn't find a manual in the house so checked for one on the Zyxel website and the relevant page heading states that it's an ADSL2+ router so you were right...he was feeding me a line. I really wonder about these guys as there was no logical need for him to say this, especially as I checked the search history for when he was online and he actually found the same router information page as I did. And the connection problem seems to have been fixed with this Zyxel router.

Couldn't find any stats apart from Download/upload : 7168kbps/994kbps. nothing about noise, attenuation etc. Any suggestions as to how I can do this?

    Thanks again

  5. Can someone help this idiot (me) understand something?

I have a TOT 6 Mb package which has been suffering from a lot of connection problems (disconnects every few minute, slow speeds) recently and after finally getting the engineer to visit the house and check everything I was told I need a new ADSL2+ router.

I have 2 routers and the one I was using (apparently now faulty and cause of problems) was ADSL2+ compatible and the spare one is not compatible. However, the spare one is now connected and working fine. Do I need to invest in a new one and will it make any real difference as I thought ADSL2+ is for higher speeds up to 24 Mb. On Speedtest.net I am getting 5Mb in BKK, 5Mb in Hong KOng and 1.2Mb to USA, which is what I was getting with the old one.

Thanks for any clarification anyone can pass my way.

FYI: The router is a Zyxel P-660HW and I am getting a B reading on the pingtest. I usually got a D or below on the old router (Linksys WAG200g)

  6. Maybe I am too skeptical but it amazes me people don't question at all what they are told that are clearly RUMORS and hearsay.

I too am very skeptical about most things (especially anything young kids tell me) and, as I mentioned in the post, I found it very strange and therefore asked one of the parents involved who confirmed that the incident did happen. The parent has a PHD from a top US University and runs several large businesses. I have known them for a few years and I didn't see any reason why they would lie. To me that is a reliable source and the only reason I posted it. If I had heard it from a friend of a friend of a friend I wouldn't have posted anything because it sounds so crazy. Now, what actually happened to the kids is still not clear and not explained. Parents were simply glad they were ok and only lost phones and a bit of money.

Anyway, this topic is proving quite entertaining and educational.

  7. The version I heard involved a group of about 5 young girls (about 13/14) who were friends of my daughter. They were in Paragon shopping centre and were found sitting on the floor outside a couple of exits. They were said to be in a daze and didn't know where they were or how they got there. Their phones and money had been taken. They remember talking to some strangers and that was the last thing they remember. Parents came (one was a police general) and they asked to see if anything was caught on the security cameras. Believe it or not none of them were turned on. They were all offered a small 'gratuity' to keep the incident quiet.

I was very suspicious when I heard all this from my daughter but I had it confirmed by one of the parents. There was no confirmation of how this happened to the kids and there was no mention of touching but it sounds very similar to all the previous stories. None of these kids needed the money and all their phones were new models but I did find the whole thing rather bizarre, to say the least. I'm certainly not saying this confirms anything, just passing on what I heard.

Anyway, it did amaze me that the security camera system wasn't even switched on!!

  8. I've been getting cut off for almost a week now. I am calling them everyday but nothing changes. The only way to correct it is having to restart the router to get connected again. Never had this problem with TOT before and it's really annoying

  9. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. All the DNS info seemed a bit too much effort for 1 website (not too technically minded) so I simply switched to a spare router I have and that sorted it.

    Thanks again.

  10. This was interesting reading for me as a PS3 owner thinking about changing over to the Xbox. After gaming online here for several years my frustration has been growing and been pushed to the limit with the lag on Black Ops and now the PSN going down for so long.

There is similar problems with DLC map packs and I had to open accounts in the US in order to purchase them since Sony has never offered any of the COD map packs in Singapore or Thailand accounts. I think I'll hold back for a while until I do a bit more research into where to register an Xbox account and where I can buy the games.

  11. I tested a torrent on my TOT connection a few minutes ago and it was working so it's not a blanket ban.....yet. However, my international connection is getting worse by the day. I have to keep switching my router off and then resetting it. I am on the phone to them once a day now. Yes, I know, it's a waste of time but at least they will have a record of my complaints when i try to cancel the contract.

  12. Which package do you have with 3BB? I was looking at their packages and was a bit confuse about medium and heavy user...no definition of what that is. All I want is a good steady connection that allows me to game without lag and download a few shows now and then.

Sick to death of TOT. Their advice to me today was change from 6Mb package to 2Mb package and the international speed should increase ???!!!

  13. Just to let you know that the Regents School in Bangkok (near Rama 9) has closed its primary school after 22 confirmed cases of H1N1. Some kids have already made a full recovery but the school was shut as a precaution. The closure was carried out with full knowledge of the Ministry of Health. I have heard rumours of government schools shut but I cannot confirm that. Has anyone heard of other schools closing?

  14. It has gotten worse recently and the lag is horrible, not so bad locally but still there. Even with 4 greens bars in a local game you can see the lag in the 'kill-cam'. If I wasn't so addicted I would have thrown the PS3 out the window months ago.

My ping shows a D or F rating most times so I guess this is the problem, not the speed. Any ideas on how to improve this...other than moving to a developed country!

  15. It's great that they are (slowly) bringing in the HD channels and I am very tempted but I'd love it even more if all the other channels will be broadcast in wide-screen format and a good quality sound and picture with a comprehensive menu system. That would make it worthwhile for me. I have called them but the folks in the call centre don't have the answer.

  16. I called True about the article in the magazine and was told the same. They are just collecting names for the marketing department at the moment and will follow up with a phone call.

No information re when or how much. They couldn't even say if the other channels (where possible) will be broadcast in wide screen. After my initial excitement I am probably going to wait as there won't be the PVR facility and HBO and ASN are not enough to justify what they are going to ask for the new box and channels. I remember them asking a large upfront payment for the PVR and that put me off alojng with the old small screen format. I wish they could get passed this half-assed approach to things and provide proper equipment and a decent signal. Why do they think customers spend so much on a big screen TV and are then going to be happy with a poor quality picture in small screen format and no recording function. The equipment is out there.

  17. Call TOT and get the password you need as they should have given it to you already. I have a Linsys router and TOT never have the info for them and instead give you the number to call them direct. A couple of years ago there was a direct freephone number which would connect you to an English speaker but now it diverts to a local office. Have some patience and they will eventually pass you through to the office in the Philippines and they have always been excellent with their patience and knowledge walking me (not very technically minded) through all the steps needed to get set up.

  18. Thanks for the speedy and helpful replies guys.

It seems it was a DNS problem. As i mentioned I'm not technically minded so I tried TOT once more and they walked me through the problem and gave me new numbers to enter and now the wireless connection is working fully again.

Is there and advantage to the Google DNS 8.8.8.8 or the Thai visa one?

    Thanks again!!

  19. Hi all, looking for a helpful suggestion to my problem.

My laptop (Sony VGN-FZ21Z running Vista) has been working fine with a wireless connection to my Linksys WAG200G router for 2-3 years. A couple of days ago it stopped loading pages and email but for some reason it will connect to Skype. Other laptops work fine and if I plug in an ethernet connection my Sony works. Even Bluetooth works but nothing on wireless except Skype.

I have called TOT and Linksys support and gone through setup but no change. I am no techy and have clearly missed something. No new software except the usual Microsoft updates.

    Any helpful suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks
