  1. i thought you automatically had 7 days to leave thailand once the work permit had run out/ revoked.

He has a Non imm B which expires on the 10th. No 7 day allowance on that unless he applies for a 7 day extension.

He should follow other posters advice and pay the 1900 baht for the 7 day extension. Why run any rsik over such a small amount of money? :)

An excellent point. Thanks for the advice.

  2. Thai Post Office is by far the cheapest way unless you are shipping a container load.

And make sure you specify "surface mail" when you talk to them (that gets you the rate specified...if they don't understand just say "cheap, cheap"). Be very clear about this or they will charge you the 1st class rate, which isn't a good deal. They will put a strap around the box right there in the post office and put a wax seal on it to detect tampering.

Allow 3 months for delivery. In my experience, it always gets there, but usually several weeks later than you think. I always just assume it has been stolen, but invariably it shows up late.

As for locations, you can't do any better than the central post office in Bangrak. They're very helpful. Go to the Saphan Taksin skytrain station. Walk west for 12 minutes (drive for about 3 minutes) past Robinson, Silom and Suriwong. Big, old building. Can't miss it. However, all offices can provide the same service, so there isn't a real advantage of using one over another.

The Thai post will pick up in some instances, but not for surface mail shipments. Best way is a taxi if there aren't too many boxes, or one of your friendly neighborhood pickup trucks which will charge you 200 - 400 baht depending on their mood.

You don't say where you are. If you told us your location, we could probably direct you to the nearest location. Of course, you can always just walk outside and ask any random person "Praisanee yoo nai?"

BTW, maximum weight limit for the US is 30kg, not 20kg. Explaining that to the Thai staff may take some effort though...that may be one reason to use the central post office.

Greg, thanks so much for your help. I'm sure it will be valuable to others, too.

Turns out I am actually close to the central post office, so will use your advice and head there. Thanks again.

  3. I'm moving back to the states next month, and as I won't be in any rush to have all my personal belongings (lots of clothes, books, etc.) back with me, I'm looking for the cheapest shipping option.

That seems to be Thai Post, which charges 3,210 baht for a 20kg parcel (the maximum weight). As I'll be shipping several boxes of this size/weight, I wonder if there are any services (offered by ThaiPost or another company) that would pick up all these boxes from my condo instead of figuring a way to get them all to the post office myself. (And on that note, I don't even know where a post office is, and can't seem to find locations on their web site.)

Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. (Also, if there's another shipping company anyone has experience with that isn't way, way more expensive, I'd love to hear that, too.) Thanks!

  4. I've got a bit of a complicated problem (or at least one for which I can't find a clear answer).

I've got a Non ( B) visa and work permit, both expiring on Nov. 10, which will be my last day of work in Bangkok.

I'm then flying, on Nov. 17, to the UK for a week, coming back to Bangkok, and packing up and heading back to the U.S. (where I am a citizen) by Dec. 1.

I'm trying to figure out if I can just "overstay" my Non-B visa by seven days, pay the fine at the airport, and then get a tourist visa upon my arrival back in Bangkok for my last week or so here... Or will I need to make a visa run before leaving for the UK?

Anyone have experience with a situation like this?

  5. Thanks all, for the advice... I had a True technician come out today, and the problem turned out to be that, despite my having ordered phone service, I apparently also had to "activate" it through my condo's office, too. At the cost of an extra 3,000 baht. It apparently takes that much to flip a switch from "off" to "on" in the building.

Anyway, problem solved after that and a phone call to True to get all the settings. (It's Billion ethernet modem, by the way.)

  6. I signed up for ADSL through True last week, and got a modem, an instruction kit and an installation CD.

From what I can tell, you have to use the software on the CD (all Windows-only) to initially set up your account, pick a username, etc., before you can establish an internet connection.

Are there any workarounds for those of us with Macs? I've tried snooping around the True web site, but there doesn't seem to be an English version of many of the sub-pages.

  7. Or just hire a van and driver for the day, with the added advantage of having someone who speaks Thai to accompany you, and possibly even suggest where to go to get certain things. This outfit rents a small van, driver included, for 1500 baht.

That is a fantastic suggestion. Thanks so much!

  8. Greetings. I've been here less than a week, but have thankfully already found a wonderful condo to rent.

My next question, though, as I get ready to move out of the serviced apartment and into my condo soon, has to do with shopping and delivery. I've searched and searched on the site, but couldn't find any information for anything other than restaurant-delivery services and the odd mention of a grocery store here and there.

My condo is furnished, but I've still got to buy more than a handful of household goods (from wastebaskets to linens, towels, pillows, etc.) that I'd normally, back home in the U.S., go to a Target or somesuch to buy. But then, back home, I'd also normally drive to them. (I don't have a car here, and don't plan to.)

So if I go to a department store and buy more than I can carry, do any offer delivery services? Same goes for grocery stores -- from what I've read there aren't any that offer online shopping, but which offer delivery services if you do the shopping in the store?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

  9. First, my apologies if this is answered elsewhere on the forum... I've spent some time searching and haven't come up with anything.

I'll be moving to Bangkok from the U.S. in the next week, already have a job and my work visa, and will stay in a serviced apartment set up by my company for the first month. But I'll start looking for a more permanent condo quickly.

My question is this: With the equivilant of three months rent due upon signing a lease at most places, what's the best way to handle those funds? I'll have all of my money in my U.S. bank account when I move, and I won't get a paycheck (and open a Thai bank account) for more than a month after I arrive. I don't particularly want to bring over thousands of U.S. dollars in cash, just for safety's sake. But I've also got a relatively low daily-withdrawl limit on my debit card (300 USD).

Wire transfers from my U.S. account apparently won't work, as I have to do those in person with my bank in the states. So, I'm not sure what my options are, beyond taking out the maximum allowed from an ATM each day 'til I've accumulated enough to pay the deposit. But that could take too long, depending on how much I'm spending... Any thoughts from those who have been through this before? Thanks in advance!
