Been here 8 years, use the 800K in the bank for the extension, no harassment, no dramas, easy peasy.

    Agreed!

Just got my retirement extension at Jomtien yesterday using the income statement.  Follow their guidelines and it’s not a problem,

I cannot see how some people make the experience more difficult than it has to be.

  2. To Soulwater,

Your post makes a lot of sense.

In this world are many snowflakes that want to blame everyone else for the problems in their lives and not take responsibility for their actions.

I do not believe for one minute this person was truly mentally ill.

As mentioned in a previous post he had traveled to Australia and lived in Thailand.  All rational decisions.

He may of been bummed out (situational depression) due to his financial situation but not mentally ill.

We all go through slight depression as different times of our lives.

He just didn’t want to return to his home country for a job when he had the resources to.

How much did you know this guy?

How can you call him a dreamer? People who never risk anything, perhaps like you, might never know what freedom is.

How do you know that the guy had no plan when he settled down? There might be one day when you wake up from your self-made rosetinted  Disney World.

    No, I didn’t know him.

Dreamer was a kinder word than loser.

I have/do take risks.  Risk is not the same as stupidity.

At 46 if he threw away everything to live in Thailand and still can’t make it perhaps he should of returned to his home country and find a job like most people do.

He is not the first or last to end up like this.  Unfortunate but true.

There is nothing rose tinted about my life.  I'm responsible for all aspects of my life.  I MAKE my destiny.  Not rely on others to do for me.

well make sure you stay in the good old USA and don't venture away too far from home.

FYI I’m currently in Thailand for two months.  I earn money first BEFORE I entered the country.

Semi-retired, paid for home, big pension, high six figure Individual Retirement Account and last but not least debt free.

I refuse to be like the many other lost souls that quit their jobs during their peak earning years, move to Thailand just to live the dream with no plan or real way to earn a living and expect someone else to pay for it.

Sadly the girl got sucked up into this dreamers nightmare.

I would have loved to be the fly on the wall with a meeting of some expats.....just some old farts bitching and moaning......lol...???

I probably would have fit right in....like the flavor of the day....?

My my main complaint...at the moment....LOS is just too damn far away....7,526 Miles as the crow flies....and the 13+ flying time to the West Coast gets harder by the year....and than you have to do a rebound  back this way.....??

Actually,  more like 19 hours in the air from LAX.

All the farang are acting like ...farang. Insurance, law, etc are not as important as feelings. In any collision, both parties are considered at fault. The question is the "proportion" of blame. The kid is dead, she's not. He wins. She has a car, he had a bike. He wins. So attend the funeral, wai the parents and commiserate. Then get a third party to arrange compensation. Maybe Bt 100K. It's a life, remember. All forgiven, no police record.

Your response is exactly what is taking place.

She attended the funeral with lawyer, paid respect to the family.  Lawyers negotiated with family.

She even said the family did not treat her rudely.

They negotiated a reasonable settlement.  49k baht up front followed by 1k baht for 36 months.

    Appreciate your post.

  7. Greetings,

I have a female friend in Pattaya who inherited an auto from her former boyfriend who passed away.

I advisedher her best option is to sell it as she would not be able to afford upkeep, insurance etc.

    Did she listen.  NO.

She had a recent accident where the male motorbike driver was traveling down the wrong way of the street and she had no time to respond and the male was killed.

The police and family of the deceased acknowledges fault on the motorbike driver.

A lawyer has told her to wait until after the funeral to speak with the family.

She was told she could go to prison for 20+ years.

Naturally she is upset.  She has no money.

This is all the information I have so far.

Does anyone have any idea how this is going to turn out?  Or what her best options are?

I find it hard to believe she could go to prison if it’s not her fault.

The family may try and get money but none to be had unless the car is sold if not damaged too severely.

    Legitmate, constructive advice is welcome

    Thanks

  8. Greetings,

Recently lost my prescription glasses.  Currently in Pattaya.

Can anyone recommend a good place for a eye exam for a new prescription and a new set of glasses.  I would require two Rx, one for reading and one for distance, progressive lenses.

    Thanks

  9. Does anyone know if Immigration will take a hotel receipt/reservations as proof of residency? My OA retirement visa will be due for a extension later this year and a multiple entry Re Entry permit.

I will use the pension letter.

I travel in and out of Thailand often during the year and prefer to stay in hotels where everything is included.

    Thanks

  10. Not if they keep grandfathering, which so far, they have done. In the US they don't have a retirement visas, but they break up families everyday with deportation rulings. I think with expatriation, anything short of permanent residence (which some countries do offer to expat retirees) is not very secure most anywhere.

They only get deported by an immigration judge after he/she has been given one chance and they screw up again (felony). They are "removed" if they are here without proper visas or nothing at all.
