  1. Wow.. so many mingers!! I only took a 2nd look at 2 of them and even then they're not all that hype.

Seen better just walking on the street.. is the prerequisite to entering this something only a select few girls can accomplish?

Thanks JFChandler, saved me trawling through all of them.

I really hope that 44 was a joke or a typo - she is scary.

    85 is not much better.

  2. Oh yes i did run some antivirus/spyware sometimes, but all they found were cookies like from doubleclick. Had AGV installed sometimes and check the whole system. it found nothing. I incidentally run Xraypc and google the results if they are ok. I Have also windows xp firwall and a hardware firewall in the router.

All I wanted to say is that all these Virus/Spyware programs probably cost more time to run in the end and makes the pc much less snappy than a clean and unprotected PC that you have to reconfigure when it goes wrong. Think about all the updating hassles (The latest virusses will get through anyway). Startup scans... Slower quick switching between users.... false alerts.....

My idea is that it is all a big scare that everyone is repeating to each other. Just like is: birdflu, acid rain, global warming, wmd's etc...

Just be a litte bit carefull with what you open and know your system...

I totally agree with obiwan. I have used computers online for the last 11 years and have gone relatively virus free. I end up having a harddrive crash due to mechanical fault, reinstall windows or buy a new one before anything bad happens. I got norton installed bundled with my last laptop and it drove me nuts for 3 months with all it's warnings and updates and weekly checks slowing down my system.

  3. The equivalent of UBC in Taiwan is 500 baht a month.

I have no idea why it's such a rip off here.. the English channels are almost identical, Star sports, movies, HBO, discovery, cartoon etc

Is it a monopoly in Taiwan? :o

Good point :D I asked my wife and she said although the channels are pretty much all the same, there are a lot of companies who will install it.

Is it impossible for anyone else to come along and take a cut of the profits here?

  5. If you didn't have to go home I would suggest going to Taiwan.

I got an Asus laptop top of the line specs for 38,000b over there. The model below that was 53,000b here.

You can pay for the flight and take a nice holiday for that difference.

  6. I think this would get lost in the supermarket thread and it's something I've wondered since I got here.

I suppose pineapple juice is reasonably cheap (always cheaper than the other fruits) but why is a 1 litre carton of orange juice so steep?

I'm sure back home it's cheaper and I lived in Taiwan last year and I could get 1.6L of 100% juice for 70baht consistently whereas the CHEAPEST brand of 100% orange juice here is 70 baht (one from the fridge in the supermarket is 80baht plus) - that's over 50% more for the same price and everything is more expensive in Taiwan.

Hoping someone can satisfy my curiousity.

    Cheers

  7. Do you think you'd make more than the reported average of 10000 a month?

Assuming you knew the roads, would you have a better strategy than the local drivers here? Half the time I get refused a 100b taxi fare I am amazed they won't take it and would rather look for another fare. I guess if they got 20 35b fares all in the same area (up and down Sukhumvit for example) they would be better off but still, what are the chances of that?

I've thought in the past 9-5 from the Si Lom MRT to immigration and back could be fairly lucrative if that was the only fare you took.

  8. Hi

I am currently a student at Thai Walen and would like to voice my opinion, which varies considerably from that of the original poster.

Thai Walen now has a school on the 3rd floor, everything is brand new. There are 2 room sizes, ones for larger classes (Max 12 students) and ones for smaller classes (Usually 6 students). The seats are no leather sofas but at least you leave the class without any backpain - So, they will suffice.

My teacher is great, very helpful, good at explaining and very insistant that we speak Thai as much as we can (Correcting your pronounciation until perfected). Every student gets to answer questions as the teacher cycles through the class, so you cannot be lazy.

There is no transliteration (Karaoke Thai) in the book, from Page 1 of Book 1 it is all in Thai script. Granted in Book 1 they do seperate the words instead of being a long line of words which will confuse newer stduents (Book 2 removes the spaces between words so you will read exactly as a Thai reads). People may think it is too difficult to learn but you will be very suprised. Many students after only one month can following the questions and read (Or recognise) the words. It is an excellent way to teach and force the best out of you.

Some might not prefer this method, but personally I like it. The book might not be perfect, nor the teacher or method but I visited 4 Thai schools before choosing this one. It has the most charisma, the most personal touch to it and I always leave with a smile.

With regards to the visa, you are still entitled to a 1 year visa, just in 3 month increments, a change that was made by the THAI GOVERMENT not so long ago. So, you still DON'T have to leave the country for 1 year, the only problem being you pay an extra ฿1,900 every 3 months instead of just once, costing you an extra ฿3,800 per year. Not really a big deal.

  9. I have two PayPal accounts - one in the U.S.A funded by my U.S. bank account, and one in Thailand funded by a BKK Bank Visa Electron card. Both work. Sending money between the two is "free" as they are both personal accounts. I have tried it, no problems. $50 were bouncing between the two without any losses or fees.

Be careful xferring money around like that. They will think you're laundering it - that's what happened to me even though the idea of doing that had never crossed my mind - Just didn't want to go through the hassle of sending money at the bank.

Anyway, they closed both my accounts for that!
