  1. Takes all kinds.

A friend of mine on his very first trip to Thailand, was dropped off at the Chao Phraya Massage by a scamming taxi driver, just hours after his arrival.

    Ended up marrying that girl.

Yep. Met his future Thai bride at a Bangkok massage parlour 6 hours after touchdown.cheesy.gifcheesy.gif

i''m not sure what's funny here? I think the majority of people meet their future spouse within a short time of going somewhere. I know this one kid met his future wife 20 mins after entering high school.

  2. So better trained traffic police checking bad drivers qualifications, addressing road issues, setting an example and catching illegal drivers.

Fines imposed more readably for bad driving or no licence.

Money raised put into better training and a higher test standard.

A basic road training/bike riding training course rolled out for all riders and school children.

Thailand's roads can be made safer. Just needs the government to take the lead.

    Not going to change much.

Many morons know the dangers, yet they still take the risk.

Look at how many Thai electricians work.

Many Thai fishermen working on boats don't know how to swim !!

    ...

I think the fishermen not being able to swim can pretty much apply worldwide.

  3. http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/14/world/asia/indonesia-earthquake/index.html?sr=fb1114earthquake1015pStoryLink

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck 150 kilometers (93 miles) north-northwest off the coast of Kota Ternate, Indonesia, on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake struck at 10:31 a.m. local time at a depth of 47 kilometers (29.2 miles), according to the USGS.

No Pacific-wide destructive tsunami is expected, but "hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake epicenter," according to the National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The estimated time of arrival for the initial tsunami wave along Indonesia's coast is within the next six hours, the warning center said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it will update its warning within the hour.

  4. In an attempt to prevent the development of a sex trade industry similar to that of Thailand, sexual contact between a Lao national and foreigners is illegal unless the two have been married in accordance with Lao family law. In some cases, the Lao government may not recognize a legal marriage certificate from foreign countries, therefore it is prudent to register the marriage with the Lao embassy prior to entering Laos.

Foreigners who enter into a sexual relationship with a Lao national may be interrogated, detained, arrested and/or jailed. The Lao national can be jailed without trial. Lao police have confiscated passports and imposed fines of up to $5000 USD. As an attempt to enforce this rule, foreigners are not permitted to invite Lao nationals of the opposite sex into their hotel rooms.

maybe why you didn't see a red light district

  5. There is still something happening, but at least at http://phukettuktuks.com/ there seems to be less news at the moment.

This was dated at 1st of October 2013. The previous report on that site was on April 2013. Maybe the site manager is not so much involved yet, or there has been a real change for the past months.

  6. 20-25k a month what kind of education does this tuk tukk guys have? = zero he should be making 10k not more then a fresh student out from Chula..

i have a high school education and drive a truck earning $100k + a year. the guy owns his tuk tuk, so i don't really see a problem with him earning a better the average wage. If i owned my truck, my earning potential would be alot higher and of course the risk of losing everything is there as well. I don't really have a problem with paying a fair price for a tuk tuk, but the protective attitude and the high charge for a short trip are more of an issue. even the motorbike taxis are more extreme then the tuk tuk. 8 years ago i paid 10 baht for a ride in patong. last year the guy asked for 200.

  7. i usually work 10 to 15 days straight. about 15 hours a day. then i'll get 3-4 days off. this is in canada. i've worked every stat holiday this year. as for time off, it's enough. if you're working, then you're not spending money. is there a light at the end of the tunnel. i suppose there is. i'll pay my bills save up. and maybe take a long vac. as for losing my job. lots of them out there.
