This snake is a Red necked Keelback which can be found throughout Thailand. Generally not aggressive but should be considered dangerous with human bite victims having suffered severe symptoms.

1. Affordability (Housing in particular)
2. Easy access to so much beautiful countryside.
3. Having a small and conveniently located airport with several international flights.

You can fly from Chiang Mai to Pai or Mae Hong Son on SGA Airlines.
www.sga.co.th
One way fares are about 1,600 Baht
There are also public buses and regular tourist mini buses travelling this route.
Personally i would travel overland from Chiang Mai to Pai then on to Mae Hong Son and fly back from there. It is a great road over the mountains with beautiful scenery along the way.

Not sure about a 'double' entry tourist entry but i applied for a 'single' entry visa earlier in the year.
Cost US$25, Copy of air ticket out of Thailand required.
Applied in the morning and picked up the next day. No waiting as i was the only person there on both occasions.

No visa requirements for British citizens travelling to Macau.
From the airport a taxi to the ferry terminal takes about 10 minutes and costs about HK$50
Ferries depart to Hong Kong regulary throughout the day and take an hour. You can choose to go to HK or Kowloon side.
Air Asia and Oasis both have very easy booking systems, but the prices i said were when i checked today and will go up in price closer to the time of travel.
Hope this helps.

The cheapest option to get you back to the UK before December 25th if you did not mind flying direct from Bangkok would be the following :

Ferry to Hong Kong (Approx HK$160 / Bht 660 )
'Oasis Airlines' Hong Kong to London Gatwick, Dec 24th Dep 00:50 Arr (24th) 06:20
Current price GBP160 / Bht 11,000 with all taxes paid.
Total Price approx GBP 213 / Bht 14,700
