  1. Hi,

    FireFox 20% Wolrdwide,

but more than 30% in Europe :o

    http://www.xitimonitor.com/en-us/browsers-...-1-2-3-145.html

Why anyone would consciously use IE instead of Firefox is beyond me. It's like having a Mercedes and a Datsun in your garage and choosing the Datsun.

    - because FF is very slow to start

    - because FlashPlayer and other pluggins have big Cpu & Memory problems on FF

    - because FF can't navigate on many sites designed for IE. By instance http://www.immigration.go.th/

    - because ...

Many reasons for which I use both IE and FF, and now more and more Google Chrome.

I never encountered any problems with FF the way you describe it and the link you attached does not work in IE 7 either. My personal favorite at the moment are Opera 9.6 or Alpha 10, quick and stable and easy to use...

  2. As an update:

I too have internet in the Mabprachan area, and indeed the first two months it was lightning fast. Often in excess of 3mbps.

Now it seems they have oversubscribed, as rarely speeds go over 400 kbps, sometimes as low as 50 kbps! To BTV's defense, they recognize the problems and have stopped accepting new subscribers (the standard "line full" reply). They also have not charged me 1 Baht, and promised not to do so until they have it running properly again.

Currently it is completely down, no IP is being assigned.

Main problem they have is the equipment to put the internet onto the cable is not living up to what it promised. The manufacturer states that the main cable should support 200 mbps, but practically BTV found out it tops out at around 80mbps.

Even though they calculated maximum possible subscribers on a cable capacity of 160mbps (allowing for tcp/ip overhead) they still ran out of capacity much sooner then expected...

Also, it is good to surf the web and for e-mailing. Forget all the rest. You do not get a router but a coax to LAN converter, the router is located in their office and off limits to you. They basically use equipment to use TV coax cable as very long CAT5 LAN cable. Basically you are on a local network with the router at BTV's office. No port forwarding etc an be set.

So currently the project is on hold...

A friend got the Wireless equipment from BTV and now he suspects that his neighbours are using his bandwidth, he can't figur out how to encrypt the Lan converter or router or whatever it is, Did they block that option also?

  3. I have a Samsung. I chose that one because it was the most efficient energy user. The remote sucks but other than that the unit is very quiet and has had no problems for two years.

checked a whole bunch of AC's and LG are by far the most energy efficient.....

the difference in energy efficiency is impossible to measure (except in a laboratory) as the same influencing factors do not exist. period.

Well I think it would be the right thing to look at how many watt the compressor and the fan use. Period.

  4. Well would it not be better just make the fare 10 Baht for all customers?

I never had any problems with the bahtbus drivers, I found it harder to get a fair price with the bike taxis. As this is a weekly topic in variuos mailbags of the Pattaya media and has been for at least a decade, a simple solution to the problem are to buy your own motorbike! I did....

  5. Hutch offer a wireless service - you will have to ask more technically minded what it actually is - I think it either runs through AIS mobile network or satellite or something like that - you get a card for your laptop or something similar for your PC and you have internet wherever you go. It is available throughout Thailand but is only a little faster than dial-up is atall. people who have it love the ability to log on wherever they are.

I believe there are quite a few companies who offer the service...I was interested in Hutch about 9 months ago because my dial-up was so poor and I couldn't get broadband - a change of job changed all that but I still might if someone on this thread comes up with a recommendation.

Hutch works togehter with CAT. You will have to buy a USB modem or PCMIA (kind of out dated) it costs around 4000 B and another 1000 B/month unlimited acess. The speed are a maximum of 156 kbps but Hutch says on their homepage that 60-70 Kbps are normal. They have just come out with a new 2 Mbps service, not sure if it is availible in Pattya yet. The new 2 Mbps service are also 1000 b montly.

Anyone considering to sign up for Hutch make sure you get the new 2 Mbps card even if the spee is not availble her in Pattaya the card will work with the old system anyway.

Personally I have only good to say about Hutch, I have never been out of service even if on ocations it has beenvery slow.

  6. Any ideas wich ISP are most realiable in Pattaya East of Sukhumvit? Currently using Hutch and it is most of the time quicker then my neighbours TOT and I never get cut off.. Moving into a new house in Pattaya Tropical and thinking of True Internet..
