  1. Just out of curiousity - why is the Thai Gouvernment so "Anti Long Stay Tourist" ...... I know alot of guys that work in the UK / Europe for 6 months during srping / summer, save up alot of cash, then go to Thailand for the autumn / winter (6 months) and spend all that cash...... I'm talking like 10 grand...... as in half a million Baht..... surely that is a good thing for the country? I can understand why they would want to stop foriegners buying up land & houses, pushing up prices etc., but what is wrong with people hanging around spending what is locally a hel_l of alot of money..... this money is filtering back up the entire country one way or another..... the typical long stay tourist is not exaclt a burden on the state?

Just seems pointless to me........... could some one fill me in?

The people who come here for 6 months (long stay tourists) will have a return airline ticket, so they will have no problem getting an extension.

What they are trying to stop is the farang who opens a bar or business in his Thai girlfriends name and is staying here long term on a tourist visa, or the timeshare touts etc. who are working illegaly, therefore avoiding having to pay for a work permit and not paying tax. If you live in any of the big tourist areas, you will see this all the time.

The answer to this problem is as they quote "get a visa appropiate to your purpose of stay" The immigration are getting fed up with these people taking the p*ss.

    Quite.

I went for a non- "O" last year and knew everybody on the bus and most of the falangs in the hotel.

Our bus was full of bar owners telling us not only how smart they had been by avoiding tax all these years, but how much smarter than us they still were by working out this fantastic series of 30 day stamps and "tourist visas". So much smarter than the Thais as well, who would never be able to clamp down on this.

Further to bar owners, there was the ususal smattering of divemasters, teachers and Real Estate "consultants" and "developers", all of whome had outsmarted the Thais down the years. One Scandanavian guy had 7 half built villas on Phuket and was incredibly on a tourist visa.

No genuine tourist is going to be affected by this.

    Quite right, good comment.

The majority are not Bar Ownwer's but Renter's who have put everything in the name of a Thai, usually a bar girl, they stand to lose the most as the boss is the bar girl. The other's mentioned are illegal imigrants working illegaly, they also walk looking over there shoulder.

Who's laughing now, he he he???

THEY SPEND THE 10K ON PROSTITUTE'S.

  3. I'm glad to hear there is or was a Mexican food joint in Hua Hin, and sorry if I missed it in the year I was there. It's a small niche market that even a giant place like Chiang Mai finds difficult to fill (now we have Miguel's and Salsa Kitchen, and more).

So, who knows the name of this place, or a more clear location of it? Is there an aficiando/lover/conneissuer of fine food who can tell us if this is California style, New Mexico, Texan :o , or some region of Mexico?

The food was very good, however, not being a connosuer of mexican food, I couldn't tell whether it was texan or mexican. :D I did try five different dishes, more out of interest than eating capacity & all were good.

Almost directly opposite the Sofitel main carpark entrance, but about another hundred yards down that road (Naresdarmi ?) in the kao Takiep direction. On the RHS, next to a french restaurant.

Met the owner - happy chap.

    Hi

Its called the California Cantina, 50m down(south) of the main entrance to the Sofitel. The guy that run's it is called Dave, nice amical American, lived in Hua Hin for about 15year's. they do a children's plate also, nice atmosphere.

If you want a proper steak, this is it.

  5. i am looking to buy a second hand motorcycle.

something like a Suzuki GSX 1100.

probably a mid-1990's model would be in my price range.

any suggestions on where to locate? are there use bike dealers? or classifieds ads in a particular place?

Go to www.gt-rider.com Here you will find Many Many links to places to buy second hand as well as postings from members wishing to sell their bike.

    Cheers

This is where I bought mine, really helpfull, E Mail them and make an appointment, one guy speaks excellent English.

  6. If you want to invest in property, now is a good time to do so. :D

It's buyers marked, like Tuktukmike said, condos may be the smartest and safest.

But small apartment is to my knowledge overpriced as there are few left in the market. :o

If you want to buy a villa/bungalow, you buy with 30+ year leasehold, won't advice the company way at the moment.

Like Tuktukmike said, the agents has gone from company to leasehold.

When it comes to resale there is a lot of them, that comes with a company and a possibility to transfer ownership.

though I would consider use a neutral lawyer for that kind of job.

There is a couple of good ones left in Hua Hin.

If you buy from resale it's possible to make a coup, if you're good to bargain.

The property market is slow at the moment, but still alive and I think Tuktukmike sometimes paint the situation a bit black.

but his knowledge to the market is wort listen to. :D

Hope this is not the Sunshine man renamed.

Plenty of "Notarie's" here in Hua Hin, Lawyers go to bangkok.

Becarefull of advice here, plenty with a vested interest (Realtors and Developers) who are finding things hard at the moment, most would fleece their own Grannie's.

  7. Hi sezanu

The only problem with what you have stated is that if you buy a villa and the person transfers the company to your name are you not just passing the problem on.

Many real estate people have promised their buyers that excisting companys will not be affected by FBA-2 but as we all know this is simply not true.

Also you can not in anyway get a lease of more than 30yrs.

Sure you can make a private agreement with the leaseholder but 30yrs is a long time and things tend to change over that period.

We looked into leasing land for a new factory and house and when we consulted a lawyer he said of course this is legal and should be safe, until the leaseholder decides you have built a nice money earner.

    Hi

    Agree entirely with this.

If you have doubts walkaway, Condo's are safe.

Becarefull of advice here as plenty with a vested inerest.

So in effect when or if the Thai leaseholder looks at what you have built and works out the value of maybe 5-10million baht what is he/she going to do.

Those that have worked or lived here for a long period of time will understand what can and does happen.

    Mike.

  8. If the past is any indicator, those who were fine with the coup, rampant corruption in public contracts, the southern insurrection, etc, will now join in loud protest :o

IF YOU ARE THAI YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO DO THIS, IF YOU ARE NOT AND ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE SITUATION THEN GO BACK TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY.

  9. Simple because I trust my wife, I will do everything possible to stay in the house I build including usufructs etc etc. Both her parents are dead and she has little contact with her family. I also want to live in Thailand despite its shortcomings for "me" its better.

I dont want neighbours so a condo is no good.

    HI

YES THIS WORKS FOR YOU, A THAI CAN PURCHASE LAND, PEOPLE COMING TO INVEST WITH THEIR HARD EARNED CASH SHOULD THINK AGAIN. THE ONLY PEOPLE BENEFITTING WILL BE THE WIFE OF THE THAI WHO RETAINS THE LAND EFTER THE LEASE AGREEMENT EXPIRE'S.

BY THE WAY WHAT DOE'S THIS MEAN?? "usufructs"?

  10. I have had a rare moment of inspiration, I have decided I am going to buy all of those B****y wooden frogs that make a stupid frog like noise when you rub them with a stick, it will have two effects hopefully, it will stop us all having to listen to the stupid noise and it may make the poor buggers that try to sell them smile for a few minutes. :o

Hey, when you have bought them all, let us know the cost. Also how many you purchased?

When you have completed the task, what will you do with them all?

  11. An extremely irritating 'lady' tried to jump the queue at the check out at Villa soi 11 today. Each time the first person in the queue paid for their groceries this individual would try to jump in and order a can of pepsi. But, each time the Thai check out girl would completely ignore her (bless her heart) and serve the next person who had joined the line. Eventually the girl lost her patience and warbled 'but I was here first' (which she clearly was not), while wobbling her head from side to side. Again she was ignored but miss wobble refused to join the queue and was still trying to push in as I paid for my groceries and left the store.

Having had numerous <deleted> try to jump the queue in cinemas, fast food places, ATMs etc. it was a real treat to see a Thai girl with the backbone to ignore this rude idiot and make an example of her. Hopefully she's probably still there, trying to buy her can of pepsi.

WHATS WORSE THIS STORY OR THE TIME WASTED READING IT. SHE ONLY JUMPED THE QUEUE IF SHE WAS SERVED OUT OF TURN, THIS WAS NOT THE CASE.

IF THIS IS YOUR ONLY COMPLAINT ABOUT LIFE THEN YOURS IS TRULY BLESSED.

  12. Hi

I visited it 3 years ago, was going to stay 4 nights, one night and I got a Taxi back to Phnomie.

Personally I feel that this is for the Ex Pats that cannot afford Thailand.

    Risky with little back up.
