  1. I always assumed forward momentum and glide ratio would prevent a plane from falling from the sky?

Just a guess at this point. Combined with the nosebleeds and loss of engine a hunch is that it had rapid decompression and they dived to get low enough for atmospheric pressure to provide oxygen to the cabin.

    That's a guess.

Cabin pressure is often maintained by energy from an engine or engines so my guess is additive.

    Good guess!

An Orient Thai Airlines Boeing 737-300, flight OX-682 (dep Mar 27th) from Phuket (Thailand) to Chengdu (China) with 119 people on board, was enroute near Kunming (China) when the cabin lost pressure due to an engine bleed air fault prompting the crew to initiate an emergency descent. The passenger oxygen masks were released. The aircraft diverted to Kunming for a safe landing.

  2. I thought I'd chime in with my somewhat different opinion on this.

I (and my wife) have always avoided any beach with Loungers on it. That's not our scene at all. I understand a lot of people love that, but seeing those endless rows of Loungers up and down a beautiful tropical beach is just plain revolting. The beaches of Kata, Karon and Patong would possibly be the worst I know for crowding beaches with Loungers. They're gone now? Awesome. Each to their own, I guess.

    Just my two bob's worth.

  3. "Krabi police said earlier yesterday that they would produce a clip to counter the one produced by the father, because they believe some of the points mentioned are incorrect, provincial police chief Pol Maj-General Nuntadet Yoinuan said yesterday."

Oh man, I can't wait to see the clip the police produce to counter the fathers claims. Hilarity ensues.

  4. The robbery had nothing to do with her death and I, for one, cannot see why this thread is being hijacked by that. She did not slip and fall because someone was snatching her purse.

Please do not hijack this thread with irrelevancies in order to push your agenda.

A girl has died in a sad accident, the only condolence can be that at least she died while enjoying her life and getting out there and doing the things she loved.

    Perfectly said. Agreed.

  5. RIP Sarah and family. Very sad and very tragic.

I'm currently in Khaolak on my seventh trip to thailand. I have never been robbed here - and I find that Thai people are some of the most honest people I have ever met. Why, just last night I watched a Thai waiter run over a kilometer to return a pair of glasses a customer had accidentally left behind. I have also had many similar experiences of honesty in Thailand myself.

  6. ...Bobby, also check out the Last Fisherman bar for a great place to chill out with a cold one..turn left just past the Phra Nang Inn and walk down the beach rd past the Golden Beach resort till the end, good spot right on the beach for sunset.

Just got back from Thailand. The hotel was fine. Actually, the fire begun in the public toilets beside the hotel - but some of the hotel roof caught fire.

Last Fisherman bar was freakin awesome. I can't believe after 6+ times in Ao Nang and I'd never gone there. Great suggestion RayInKrabi.

Now it's back to reality in OZ. :)

  7. Hi all, my wife and I are booked in to stay there in 3 weeks - we just paid 2 nights ago. F'kn yikes. Thanks for the updates everyone. It's interesting to note that I trust the reliability of the comments in here considerably more than the info I've read in the news (gas bottles exploding, hotel gutted, etc.)

This will be the 3rd or 4th time we've stayed there - excellent spot. Thank god/buddha/invisible-overlord that this fire happened after the recent renovations (remember when it used to have a facade of split bamboo? ...and looked like a tree-house?).

Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    :)

You'll be fine, I'm just off the phone with them and they say all repairs underway and should be completely normal by mid-next week.

Great location, enjoy your stay, try the noodle soup in front of the minimart up the street.

Thanks GOM, I appreciate the update. I will be sure to try that soup ...among other things :D

  9. Another one to look out for is Taxis waiting for tourists at the airport. Last time I was there, a group of 3 drivers were quoting me a ridiculous price (400 bht) to run me and my wife around the corner to Bo Phut. I just laughed at them and caught a private mini bus for 70 bht. My point is though, that they looked mighty pissed after I had laughed at their attempt to rip me off. Meh.

I should also point out that i've stayed on Samui at least 8 times and have always had a blast there with no trouble at all. Mind you, I always hire a bike there.
