  1. Cars: Yes - wish I remembered before - the thick felt sold in car repair shops is useful (I was thinking of using such felt for a padded door liner.)

Not sure the Thai bricks are ideal - but I used to use two house bricks slapped together to test the response of a room, quicker that the 'proper' way. But a long time since I used to do this stuff.

Look up "home theater building" they use other materials for sound control. I would like to know what is available for sound control here in Thailand as I'm planing a home theater soon.

  2. It has been proposed that in the near future, because of the growing number of Farang home owners in the district, that new Vice-Governer of Surin will be chosen from a short list already made up comprising of 12 Farangs from 12 countries around the globe. He, or she will report directly to the Governer. Although this plan is still in the development stage, a number of the candidates have been already informed of the plans. This does seem a step in the right direction, and maybe we cwill see it in more provinces.
It is April Fools day!!!! :D:D

    Along with Isaan Airways :D:D:o

  3. Just searched but looks like this topic was discussed a few years ago, that said 5 will get you 10 that somewhere herein is the answer. Anyway, have a friend {yes really} who has mounted slides which he'd like to scan to digital format, possibly as contacts, review and then scan {better quality?} those he wishes to keep.

    Thoughts, suggestions welcome.

    TIA

    Regards

  4. :o I guess it will never end . I am from thre US and the my friends in the UK say I dont speak English , Does that mean i cant live in the UK. American is kind of English ? LOL

And they are right, you, we speak American, I've been ther some time ago and couldn't understand half of them as well! Nice place though.( example: getting "pissed" Engand= having a good time at the pub. American= having a good time at the bar with their fists.

  5. agreed...my wife knows all them perfectly now...just waiting for her interview letter. But, the test is changing and we won't know for sure what version they will be using. So, she has to study for both of the formats!

I made sure my did what ever it takes to get hers as well--- 1978 and the test was a bit harder as i recall. I had to look up some of the questions too. :o Its worth it!

  6. "Police would summon the bus operator for help in catching his driver, who fled the scene."

    What a f#cking surprise...

If "Fleeing" ever becomes an Olympic Event, Thailand will be assured another Gold. :o

Does anyone know the fellow was crushed by the bus? I feel bad for his relatives and the female with him.

  7. We use it to mach the use that Thai's call all " White " people simple as that. When I was stationed there in the early "70's", I found the word was used in A hateful manner by the Thai men because their wemen where attracted to us both by size, money and the way we generaly treated them. And simple ingnorance, ie.. Most thought "black" people have tails and only one person could fit in an aircracft. Farang kee nok Foreang bird sXXt???? come on does that realy hert your feeling. The general lack of world knowlage in the general public schools isn't a great help as well, and maybe we "farang" need to suck it up and live with. Ask yourself: do you really want most Thai's to know about the "west". I think it would spoil Thailand and remove forever the true reason most of us Farang come here in the first place.

  8. There are Thai wives who married Air force military men who had 1 year tours at Ubon, udorn, NKP, Korat, Thakli, Udaphao, Bankok Airport etc... who are drifting back because its easier to retire in Thailand than the US... Mostly guys who retired from the military....

A third demographic that I hadn't considered, thanks for that. That would be double culture shock if either partner hasn't been making regular trips back to Isaan.

Not really a big shock, as you can take the farm girl off the farm but not farm from the girl, ie. the lady's have a net work and still eat the same foods and are in contact with various family members and speak Isan as well. In my case we have a restaurant ( Thai) as well, and all the employees are all Thai. They Know about whats going on at "home" to.

  9. The results should be really interesting. There's the 'old school' who are mostly ex- military or oilfield who met their wives on r&r or crew change, lived here and gradually immersed themselves in the lifestyle culture. And their will be the 'new class' that met their wives via the internet and probably feel that they have been thrown in at the deep end. Talk about culture shock!

Good luck with your thesis. I would think there are plenty willing to share their experiences but maybe the interview approach would be a bit intimidating.

  10. An essential element to Thai food is that there must be a harmony of tastes and textures. Thai cooking combines hundreds of years of Eastern and Western influences, and chilli's were introduced to Thai cooking in the 1600's by missionaries who had acquired a taste for them while serving in South America.

My history may be a little foggy here, but was it not the Portugese who introduced them here from South America on their exped to Ayutthaya? There are the remains of a Portugese church up there, so missionaries would have been on the ships I presume.

They also brought Custerd desert (sweet) to Thailand as well.

  11. Thai girls generally are viewed very diffently by westerners because most guys who have Thai girls are from the redlight districts (remember im generalising here) and there experiences with them leads them to think all Thai girls are simular. Thai girls in general are reall conservative which many farangs wont agree with due to there own experiences in Thailand around the redlight districts.

Also Thai girls that live around the redlight discrict or grew up there will tend to be alittle more aggressive then other Thai girls. Just like in all countries I guess.

And just might add, if anyone pulled a knife on me i would put them in hospital no matter what sex they are. Threaten my life and i will hurt you

Well when I first started out with my wife, first made a few rules between us. 1. No hitting ( boxing me) as I'm much larger than her and I would in a hart beat hit her back, show her the size of my hand (fist) and that fixed that future problem. 2. I would never harm her in any way or form unless she started the dance first. 3. If she didn't like the way things are, well there are no chains on her legs she is free to come or go. Well there were a few more "rules" but we have been together now for over 30 years. Should note here that she was a former Royle Thai womens Airforce sargent as well, a real tough lady!

  13. God, I hope he didn't make it to Ubon, i'm on holiday there this Christmas. I think he got his animosity to Isaanites from the guy who suggested he should find accommodation in Ubon by using "those floppy things at the end of your legs"....lmao.

What a muppet, gives Brits a bad name.

Wow! this Steven W ..... what bitter A..H..., What ever his issues are he really needs to get over it and move on before he looses it and does someone some harm or some harms him. How a little mental care for poor StevenW.

  14. Iam American, retired USAir Force in 1987. I have lived in England (1969-1973) and Germany (1976 - 1983). We will be there on the 19th of Sept for the long haul and building our new home. Look forward to learning to read and write Thai/Issan and a slower pace of life. I can utter some German, Spanish, Taiwaneese, and of course Thai. We will be in Det Udom some 45km south of Ubon just off highway 24.

    Rocky

Well hello, I will be making my last move to a small vill east of Chok Chai (korat) as well in a few years. We have too wrap up things here first. Retired 1994 22.5 years was enough.

  15. Next time I go back, I'll be sure to kick Hilary and the liberals in the nuts. It's a well known fact that the passport siuation is backed up at this time due the Canada/Mexico/Caribbean situation, No need to be shocked about a 2 month wait time.

It might be the time to start working on a American citizenship, as getting an Amercian passport is easy and they last longer. It's best if Thailand goes the wayside like Burma, she can just leave on the AM passport. I worked with my wife, to pass the test and she did so 30 years ago and hasn't looked back since. No woorys about coming and going as well, and it's good to have both. ...... yeah kick some of those whining self serving pasty two faced rat basXXXXt for me too. give them something to cry about!!!!!!

  16. Extreemly dangerous crossing there since the lanes on one side go BOTH directions.

People crossing the road don't expect that, only look one way.

I've seen allot of close calls.

Why don't they creat a barrior to prevent accidents?

How many get hurt or killed in that area I wonder?

Nobody cares enough to spend the money-- and money is the issue. "Farang no die if not here in Thailand"
