  1. I'm living in Myanmar now, after 20 years in Thailand. Not in Yangon, but on the resort area. Living is CHEAP (I've got a free housing) because there is very little to buy. Occasional shopping for clothes and other necessities must be done in Bangkok. Cannot get ready-made pants, shirts, razor blades etc. Not even in Yangon. And I don't wear Longyi.

People like in Thailand 20 years ago, the smile is genuine...

Salaries for expats lower than in Thailand, but Visas and WPs easier to get. Corruption is bad.

All in all, quality of life (unless you want to party) is better, much better.

I don't expect any quick changes after full government handover, it will probably take another generation

  2. My employer has a policy keeping the WP's in the safe. If I need to open for example a Bank Account, I need to ask permission to use (my own) original WP.

I have worked in Thailand for over 13 years, this is the first time I am not allowed to have my Work Permit on my possession.

Wonder if this is legal or common practice?

What is the recommendation by Ministry of Labor?

  3. Why would he want to spend 500 - 600 baht for a room when they are all over the place for 150 baht per night?

Go to the traffic lights hang a left and any one of them are cheap.

Why would he want to spend money on a taxi when they can jump on any songteaw on the main street and ask them to take you to the far ferry or even center point for around 100 baht?

Manin street is 500 meters? Hmmm I think your wrong there. The main street is called SUKHUMVIT and is the longest road in Thailand and runs the entire length from north to south.

Stop trying to give people false info dude. Do you own the SA hotel or the POP guesthouse or something?

150 baht for a decent room with air? Not likely.

So true, so true...but if your life is about spending 150 or 500 for ONE night, take the rathole for 150 - otherwise stick to SA or POP. (If somebody gets a HUGE commission on 500 - so what!java script:add_smilie(":)","smid_38")

  4. I did buy a new pair in Thailand. Plastic lens. Wanted Glass but was told No Have. Cost 6000 Baht.

Could have got Glass here in the UK for that sort of money. So I would say get them in the UK. Plus the Eye test is better in the UK

You really bought the glasses at the first optician recommended by a Tuk-Tuk driver?? :)
