  1. I can't imagine I have a rare misprint... are you sure you ad is the current issue #112, on page 9, with the Father Ray scandal on the cover? There's nothing about any Patrick's Belgian, or anything else in the ad... if this IS a rare mis-print, I want to get it up on eBay at once... but I will tell you in advance, I will keep a high reserve price.

And in my edition, the incomplete ad is printed upside-down... do you think that will add to the value?

Its certain to. Please PM me first when you decide to auction this rare piece of journalistic history.

  2. In my Pattaya People it is written :

    Christmas Eve/Day

    Patrick's Belgian Restaurant

    and also :

For Reservation Call Patrick(and the telephone number)

for most of us Patrick's Belgian Restaurant is a well known place in Pattaya and this for many many years

    Check his website

Weho maybe has one of those rare " misprints". You know like the stamps? The ones that have stuff upside down and are worth MILLIONS ( to the zealots that collect stamps )

This rare edition of the " Pattaya People" may be worth the same one day................like, say the year 2199?

  3. First I would like to say that I do not have any children at BEST school. I would not let my children be educated ANYWHERE in Thailand period! However, I do know something about BEST school and that is it has approximately 1000 students. Every year/term some students leave and some new students arrive and the majority stay. This tells me that the majority of parents are satisfied with the school. There are always rumors that there will be a mass exodus - but it never happens.

Anyone who continues to have their children 'educated' at this school in the current conditions is negligent as a parent; I know this is a strong statement but it is my opinion. If you continue to pay money to this establishment for crap education, no facilities to speak of and no concern for health or hygiene they the parents are either clueless or could not careless about their kids and now it is even unsafe!

If there is NOT a mass exodus then there should be!!

EmCross. You had some not good experiences. That is obvious by your frequent and rambling postings.

I had two children there, both in the new building. My children are now at an International but that is because my new employer pays for that.

I was very satisfied with the level of care and standard of education my children received. I spoke to the teachers often. I have only ever heard of problems on the Anuban side.

For the parents that are constantly whining on this thread about the care the children receive............do what EMCross did.............vote with your feet and remove your children.

If ANY one picked MY child up by the neck.........my child would be out of there by now. Does the poster who reported that have no b*lls?

Sorry for the OP whose son was left unattended. I too would be furious and again, he would be out of there by now !

I personally find some of the comments on here about the teachers ...offensive and given with very little thought by parents who should know better.

Stevemiddie seems to have come into some personal attacks because he is perceived as "defending" the school.

I have read ALL the posts and yes, he defends the school against idiotic comments that

    1) " the teachers don,t give a sh*t "

    2) "all the school is dirty".

    3) " filipino teachers etc "

I see he has defended against GENERAL comments from some quite ill-informed posters here. He and Graham taught my boys and I have no complaints. For the posters who expect farang teachers to have any say in school policy, then you are having a laugh and you have only been in Thailand for 2 minutes.

For all of the posters with your BMW,s and your two a penny Fortuners and ex-bar girl wives............change your lifestyle if you are so concerned about your child. Sell the car, the bar........get rid of the Mia Noi and send your child to another school. But you won,t.

Cost too much and you may have to DRIVE far for it.

  4. I,m pretty sure that Phuket is limited in factories..............they do mostly seem to be in Bangkok and North.

My wife buys direct from the factory that makes the stingray briefcases and larger items. Usually only 30% of the cost that they sell for in MBK. She makes a decent living on Ebay with it and her own website. Like most Thai,s though............she only puts 50% effort in to it.

Other 50% is on the phone. :o

  5. Well 15 years ago I had a Europe - Singapore return ticket an visted a singaporean travel agency requesting a one way to Hat Yai.

It was my plan to travel with a boat from Satun to Langkawi and fly from there to Sillipor again.

At the travel agency I was informed Thai Airways refused to sell me a one way ticket. I argued I did have a Sillipore - Europe ticket at no avail :o

Finally I opted for a ticket to Penang, took a taxi to the Thai boarder and entered by foot at Sadao without problems.

Just silly I had to do it this way, some organistions have no brains obviousely.

15 years ago. Useful information. Thank you

  6. I'm drifting off topic a bit here but I seems to me that it would be a good idea for parents to insist on verification of teachers qualifications at these schools.

As a teacher of English they must have a degree and TEFL - I've met teachers over the years who are quite happy to admit they have either no degree or a false one.

If they are prepared to lie about that, what else do they lie about?

Reading stevemiddies previous post it would seem that Chonburi MoE is already doing this and that Immigratrion are asking for criminal record checks. This is obviously a good thing that should be conducted throughout all of Thailand

  7. Heh... well just in case this is for real. Tell your husband to get an english teaching certification in england before moving here. Like Toefl, thats gotta be better than a motorbike repair certificate. He wont make alot of money but he can live. Dont worry about him making other english friends..... there are lots of english men here.

    Damian

Errrrrrrrrrrr sorry but TOEFL is NOT a teaching qualification or certification for teaching.

  8. 1) We have no entitlements outside of our contract.

I would have thought that that was obvious! Your contract states the employers obligations to you and your obligations to them. I take it that you were happy with the conditions before you signed, were you? Did you read it properly or did you just sign it?

The concept of fixed-term faculty agreements embodies certain features. It would be inappropriate to apply these conditions to agreements that run indefinitely.

This is where negotiations take place before agreements are signed. If you are on a scheduled flight from Bangkok to Tokyo and then change your mind and want to go to Manila, can you ask the pilot to change the flight plan in mid-air? Can't you sit down and re-negotiate?

I suppose that schools always hire workers on short term contracts, thereby avoiding any long term hiring costs.

    Incorrect.

3 x 1 year contracts count as a 3 year term. ( If the service is continual )

  9. If your degree is in Math then you should be applying to International schools as a SUBJECT teacher. Assuming of course you are qualified to actually teach.

Private classes do tend to be obtained by word of mouth and experience in Thailand.

You say you have students who are being tutored privately in Math? Why don,t you ask them how they arrived at this?

  10. Hi,

I live in Phuket, i have a tourist visa, i forgot to extend my visa, i know it's bad. My visa finished on 3 december. What is the better solution?

1-Go to the immigration office to pay the overstay and pay an extend visa

2- Go to airport, pay the overstay and fly to another country to get a new visa

What do u think? I'm very worry.... :o

    Thanks a lot !!!

You can go to immigration pay the fine and they will extend it for 7 days , and in that 7 days you can do a visa run to Ranong or malaysia for another visa.

    Errrrrrrrrrrrr............. absoloutely NOT !

You will have to LEAVE the country and then return.

No offense intended Tattycakes but advice like yours will only get folks into trouble.

  11. Thanks for the good information.

Suppose I entered as a retiree and just did volunteer work in a position where I was not in conflict with a Thai. Then, in a few months, I was offered a paying position as a teacher. At that time, can I get a work permit without too much trouble?

    Tony

If you entered as a retiree, as lopburi3 has already stated, volunteer work would be illegal. A few months later, you would have to convert (or give up) your retirement visa and get a B work visa. How much trouble is it to get a work permit? It all depends. I retired, came to Thailand, taught full time, etc., and never got a work permit. They're easy to get if you find a school that wants you badly enough to put in the paperwork.

    This is true.

I can,t imagine though why you would want to work illegally?

  12. I heard from a very good authority that he wasn't insured.

And your point is? The hospital did not know if he was insured or not did they? They let him die because he could not prove he was insured or provide them some cash.

They did not LET him die. He was given emergency treatment and required furthur blood transfusions. It was decided to send him to the Government Hospital in Chonburi where the blood was available.

He was insured on a basic scheme with BUPA which probably covers the cost of a Doctor saying " good morning" and very little else.

  13. One week in the classroom is not enough. You may as well take a correspondence course, such as that offered by our new sponsor, ICAL. The industry standard is at least four weeks of full time classroom work plus six or more hours of closely observed and critiqued classroom practice teaching., such as that offered by our other sponsor, SEE.

As it has been stated forcefully, you don't need to pay a huge sum for a dubious guarantee to get a dubious job.

I will check again that I wrote everything down correctly and then go and see her again. OK, I need to make sure I get 4 weeks training in the classroom from any course thats offered.

Agreed on the job 'front', I was planning to take the first option and then see what happened during the trainng period and of course ask questions here.

Thaks for the feedback on this.

If you intend to " teach " in Pattaya after your TESOL, ESL whatever.............don,t forget your Criminal Records check too as this is being requested at Immigration and by Chonburi MoE now.

I will keep this in mind. Although, as I can prove I 'was fitted up by the old Bill' for all my offences I should be OK. No seriously I will look into this, I have no convictions so it should not take too long I would hope. I will look through the forum to see what this is all about.

    thanks for the advice

    dave

It takes about 40 days Dave and is applied for at your local police force where you resided last.

    Cost is 10 UK pounds.

Thanks for that. I did read through many of the posts on this forum regarding this, but until I read this reply I was still not too sure what I needed to do. I have to go back to the UK in January for a couple of weeks. Would it be a good idea for me to visit the local Polic Station and get this underway then? I will 'search' the forum again and see if there is a post that explains the procedure in some detail.

    thanks again

I searched the forum again and found this posted by 'Daihard' - http://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q542.htm, and gives the FAQ on this process.

I searched the Police Websites and this is the downloadable 'SUBJECT ACCESS REQUEST' form for the Met Police:

    http://www.met.police.uk/information/request_forms.htm

I am assuming this is the form that starts the process to provide me with a piece of paper form the UK authorities that satisfies the 'Criminal Records Check'. If not then I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

    dave

Yes. Form 3019B is the one you require. You can start the process in the UK and maybe have the report posted to a friend in the UK and then have it forwarded to you in Thailand?

  14. Well our school just told us that Thai labour Law does NOT apply to teachers/headmasters of private schools. Has anyone got legislation to prove otherwise (because the sections of document I was shown says it does not apply to us)? And if it is true then what law does cover teachers in such schools? Main concerns are severance pay (some teachers have been at this school several years, though on yearly contracts); deductions made to salary and little paid sick time.

The school is wrong. There is a law regarding private schools but it relates only to the opt-in system of health care. ( government )

This is the reason that many private schools have other facilities for health care...BUPA etc.

Labour Law still applies to private schools. They are also legally obliged to pay SS and taxes.

Yearly contracts still add up to whatever total of years you have been there.

If you have been at the school for 5 years ( on a renewable 1 year contract ) you do have 5 years of service and any compensation should be paid to allow for that period of time.

Contact your local Labour Court. They will put the school right. :o
