  1. I don't think you can work for two companies in Thailand easily.  The amount should not matter as long as you have a work permit. You will not get a work permit if they pay is not enough. With that said, certain industries have different requirements.  For instance, folks from Myanmar who do domestic don't need 50 or 60 K. Teachers are exempt or rather have a lower requirement than say engineers or managers.

  2. This is an interesting piece. Firstly, it is in English, well written and conforms perfectly to western style journalism standards. This, in itself, is odd. Why is so much effort put into this English article? Perhaps just lucky for us, finally, an English journalist on Thailand has emerged.

Secondly, it freely disagrees with the government’s actions and points of view. This is odd although considered normal in the west, but here, it is odd. The author backs up strong points with strong examples to fortify their position.

Lastly, from a communication perspective, the persuasion of this article is to show intelligent criticism of a government. It makes things normal. It appears you have normal free speech. It appears you have normal rights. It appears you have a normal government.

I am not sure if that was the goal of this piece from the authors/publishers, but from the moment I started reading this article, I felt something is different. Damn, we get a normal article and I find it difficult to just accept it as that.

  3. I did research 1 year ago on English Language Proficiency tests in Thai Universities. I tested students who passed the proficiency tests. The test was very easy to pass and was very leniently graded. For instance, if students did not know the answer to a question and wrote "I do not know the answer." with a capital at the beginning of the sentence and a period/full stop at the end of the sentence, they would receive 75% of the grade for that question. There were 5 questions and each question needed to be answered in 1 sentence, not 2 or 3 sentences but 1 sentence.

The results of the research was that 63% of the students that took the test failed. It must be mentioned that not all the students were Thai, some were native English speakers, and with that said some of the 37% that passed were native English speakers.

  4. For what it might be worth to some here, you might want to try out the media suite XMBC (Google it), which is an opensource free media suite. You can add a plugin NAVI-X with allows you to watch real time TV users share. Some are quite slow and many are OK. It's all Internet based so you need Internet.

You can find many stations (1000s) and many languages as well as premium feeds for pay-per-view events such as boxing, UFC, Soccer (Football), baseball, cricket, movies, etc.

It's worth a try for some and not worth it for others. For me it's OK. But I use torrents for TV shows/movies for my TV purposes. I have cable on my TV but have not even turned it on for over 2 years.

The scary thing is if we are to understand that this is not about corruption and if the charges and accounts of this event are true, then it is safe to say that unlawful detention, coercion, etc. is well known by the authorities and those in power. That going after 'anyone' for corruption in order to reach some other goal insinuates that this type of activity (corruption, etc) is pandemic (which most know to be true) and that there is zero will to combat it.

I.E. It is OK to be corrupt and act this way no matter what your position is.

  6. What an idiot, keeping all this money in Thailand. Must have been very very sure of never ever being disturbed about it. And he might be right, this is the first case ever which came out in Thailand. And as we all know this is just common thing here with our friendly policemen....

Not a lot of thought put into this post.

Just a couple of other not-well thought out thoughts... what if what is kept in Thailand is just what was difficult to get 'out of the country'.

What if what is left in Thailand just the "tip of the iceberg" in regard to what is outside Thailand.

  7. I have discussed this topic with my Thai wife many times. The first time it happened to my daughter, she was around 13 months old or so, and I instinctively put my hand up to block the hit by the offending woman. I was appalled and the woman was shocked at my behavior and the fact that I was indeed quite serious in regard to my action. She and the others present then started to laugh at my reaction. I was not amused.

One post has mentioned 'to each their own' but I still cringe when I see it done to other babies.

  8. After reading the posts for this article, most of the posts, if not all of them, do not deal with the real issue in regard to the matter at hand. International accreditation is not a Thai accreditation; it is an international standard with many organizations offering their own brand of accreditation. In order to understand the true implications of this new policy you would need to know which accreditation the International School of Engineering (ISE) is accredited by.

The accrediting organization is responsible for setting the requirements of admission for the university’s program. There is no need to have any English proficiency at all if you want an engineering degree from a Thai university so criticizing English Proficiency Level (EPL) Test requirements is moot as it is not a requirement.

However, if you want your university to be ‘accredited’ by this-or-that organization (ie: IAO-AIU) then you need to attain certain scores in various entrance examinations. Additionally, you cannot call your university ‘international’ unless it is an unaccredited ‘International’ university. Additionally, these organizations stipulate topics to be studied, credit hours, etc… The Thai MOE has implemented many of the base requirements of western nations into their own regulations, ie: 45 hours of instruction per course in universities in Thailand.

Additionally, universities in Thailand do not need to adhere to international accreditation requirements unless they wish to continue to be accredited by that organization. EPL is not tested leaving universities as a standard. If you have the minimum level entering the university and you get a degree conferred upon you, that’s it. If the accrediting organization gets complaints about a university’s graduates' abilities being sub-par in regard to their standards, then they can revoke accreditation from that university.

  9. Currently, I attend a university in Bangkok and have been for over two years. I go to school for 9 am and finish at 5 pm.

I enjoy learning and studying. My experiences in Thailand have been shocking.

I have witnessed bigotry and racism, in print as well. I have witnessed mass copyright infringement. I have noticed a disregard towards education. All this I have witnessed from the administration.

Professors which are good and mark fairly are fired. The students that waste the class' time all pass. I study English and my colleagues, when presenting, read from a piece of paper copied from Wikipedia in voices you cannot understand what they are saying, fortunately, the entire page they are reading from is in the PowerPoint behind them.

Plagiarism is rule of thumb, cheating is standard.

There are no standards and no accountability. As you parallel Thai society and their University / Education system you see a direct correlation. When I hire employees here, I care not for their 'looks'.

  10. It is not what was done, but what was not done. The impact of what was not done indicates that you can do what ever you wish with relative impunity.

The word 'Thailand' means land of the free. It appears that this is being taken literally from an individual stance. I can do whatever I wish even if if is against what you wish, even if what you wish is legal. Being legal is an entirely new can of worms though. Legal tends to mean I paid more tea money than you have. With that said I am not implying that this is the case here as I do not know what the case is here.

It is important that Thailand creates laws that reflect it's culture, not mine, so I do not have to understand why a law is made. My problem is in understanding a law and the accountability attached to it. I sometimes feel that there is different levels of accountability here.

  11. Craig, I agree with you. It is going a bit far. The exaggeration is used to amplify what is being said about this guy.

I don't know if he is good or bad. He might be bad. Either way, the question is, are we bad? I feel we are not.

If we do not treat all fairly, then we are just the same as he, just differently.

"The only difference between a mad man and me is that I am not mad."

As far as Al Capone. I never met him and I don't know what he did other than what others have said he has done.

  12. It is my understanding that they were military brought by a military officer but, that has not be substantiated as far as I know. With that said, I have to wonder why we need to guess about the facts, why there are no facts, why there is no coverage.

In the west, if this happened, yes there would be bloodshed because you don't do that. If you do, then it's a serious matter. There are laws in place exactly for this. Laws need to be enforced or rescinded. Here laws are in place for looks, a facade.

  13. It is people that use weapons to kill people that kill people.

If this is not the case, then people who sell guns, weapons, etc... kill millions a year.

If this is not the case, then companies and all involved that manufacture weapons kill millions each year.

If this is not the case, then people involved in the research of weapons, kill millions each year.

If this is not the case, then governments who develop, create, transport, sell or trade any form of weapon or technology associated with weapons kill millions of people a year.

Further, if this is not the case, any citizen of any nation who's government falls into the above statement kills millions of people a year.

Ego, we, including myself, are all guilty of killing millions of people a year.

If people are held responsible for potential acts and the potential acts of others, then it will not be long before you can be legally arrested for even thinking harm to others, even in a fit of rage.

I find it scary that people/governments that have weapons can outlaw others the ability to have weapons or do as they please because they don't want them to have weapons. Yes, killing people should be wrong, but people who kill should be held responsible. We cannot go around and remove the ability from people to kill someone else. It is impossible.

  14. I have been in Bangkok for over 6 years, but I don't eat a lot of pizza nor am I an aficionado on pizza. I never remember the bad pizza places until someone says let's eat at … such and such a place. Then I remember!

I noticed in this Bangkok Pizza thread that there are a few great options for Bangkok pizza. I would like to add my pizza place here. I have tried a few pizzas here and have always enjoyed them. They are located in Sukhumwit and deliver pizza in the central Bangkok area. They only deliver, however if you want to go down and sit with the cook and her husband and family I am sure there will be a seat there for you. Their name is Big Pizza. They have a new website up lately, it's basic but it works. Their phone number is 02-662-1330 and their website is bigpizza dot org

I order from them because I always like the pizza. I hope you do too.
