  1. By the way, you are not permitted to post anything that questions the moderators. That is supposed to be done privately

Privately LOL, That got me a ban suspension last week

  2. Pub Beer in Sriracha is also another good seaside restaurant. Popular with the Thais and their families, the food is very good and inexpensive, and the menu is written in Thai as well as English. A band plays every night from about 8:00pm, but not loud enough to drown out conversation. An added bonus is the plethora of attractive uni students working after hours as service staff... very friendly and they love kids.

Where is it? the thought of university girls serving is definately tempting enough to try

  3. OK pattaya Related only please.. you just add 3 words see where the story leads.

Here we go. ( started it so I get more than 2 words)

"I was in walking street when I saw a farrang wearing black shirt with a bald

  5. Scuse me butting in here

Although farang is spelt in Thai with an "r" symbol in the middle to the farang ear the sound of most Thais pronouncing farang does sound very much like an "L" sound.

So natural really that many farang transliterate as falang

I cringe when I hear farangs prononce the word farang with a hard resonating RRRR sound in the middle.

The only time when you will hear a Thai pronounce this way is on a News Program - bit like BBC Thai

For me for many years I spell farang like this - farlang - if you say it quick it has a much more natural sound.

Not meant to lecture - just an observation

Oh for the opening poster - Think of the future - I like trees - mango, banana etc something to grow up and give shade and character to a garden and you get to eat the fruit too!!

Some one who writes "scuse" is telling you how to spell and pronounce, funny.

Maybe you should just try answering his original post and advise on Malaysia Grass or do you pronounce it "glass"

  6. So many people quick to critise but slow to defend. Those of you who have children at BEST, as I do, must have received a letter (dated 28th Sepember) from the School Pincipal informing the parents that the school has leased the land adjacent to the new building which will be used as a car park. The land, after suitable preparation of the surface, will also be used as a sports field. Those who have moaned, particularly about the proposed 10 baht parking fee, where is your voice of support now?

Have you seen the land, this land was used previously by the school as a car park, see how they prepare it as a sports field. ( the letter states it will be leveled nothing about any grass? it states it will be available for "sports day" not every day sports use.

My initial comment stated clearly I was not posting regarding the 10 baht, lest see what Best do with this land, it is not theirs so I doubt they will spend a great deal of money on it.

I wonder also if they will bother to clean the school when it closes tomorrow for 3-4 weeks? Have never bothered in the past so why start now.

Yesterday I visited Satit, all I can say is I wish I had done this a long time ago, yes the cost is nearly double Best for the english program but this is very different, the teaching is 75% english and 25% thai rather than 50/50 in Best, the classes have 10-12 students rather than Bests 28 as in one of my childrens classes.

Facilities well you must take a look to see that there is no comparison.

I do listen to what people say on here, I took into consideration posts regarding the travel time to Rayong for the REP and how dangerous the road is, this is why I have chosen Satit,

Please go take a look at Satit before you jump on the Best is great Band Wagon.

Best served a purpose while there was no other school of note offering an English program in the area, it at one time had good teachers in abundance, there are not many left however and it has gone down hill rapidly in any areas.

I am not alone in this way of thinking.

If Best suits you and you are happy with its educational, discipline standards and its facilitries then good for you.

I am not hence the move.

  7. Isn't the point simply that the smugglers are now trying to game the system.

Illegally import the car. Strip out several key expensive parts and hide them (probably before the car was smuggled in), fully expecting Customs to auction the car, which, because of the missing parts, would go for a relative song.

At this point they'd have a legit car, and would have paid a lot less than the proper import duty, and once the missing parts are replaced, one worth a lot more than they paid for it. (And customs would never get 40m for a Ferrari that doesn't run.)

Personally, customs did the right thing. In the short term, this will lose customs the income from the sale of one car. But in the longer term, maybe the smugglers will think twice before trying it again, and assuming it was smuggled in for a specific customer, he may well be thinking now that it would have been better to buy one legally. (And any other potential customers for the smugglers may be thinking the same.)

For those suggesting customs fix the car before selling it, if you heard that customs officials were ordering Ferrari parts from Modena, wouldn't you assume something corrupt was happening? This way, they send out a message.

Why does destroying the car deter them any more than taking it away from the importer and selling it? either way the original importer no longer has it, the only downside is that there is a baht loss for the government, 20 million baht buys a lot of medicine, clean water and food or educational supplies.

its all about the big customs guy flexing his muscles, look at me on the TV "wtat"

  8. The FPV's are attached to Pattaya Police Station and only work in the Police Station. The Tourist Police Volunteers are attached to the Tourist Police and work "in the field", mainly Walking Street, however their responsibility covers 4 Eastern Seaboard Provinces, not just Pattaya. The FPV's have been active for about 3 months, the TPV's have been active for 13 years and are supported by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism and the Tourism Authority of Thailand which is why most Pattaya-based forums do not allow threads on TPV's (

    apart from TV it seems!!!!).

Howard, would you care to expand on why it is frowned upon to discuss TPV's? your "!!!" seems to me that you are a little shocked that TV has let this thread develop, (well done George don't give in Maestro let it run unless it gets off track) why would you or any TPV not want to be mentioned in a forum? If as you say you only assist tourists I would have thought you would have welcomed the chance to promote this.

Why would you or any TPV think it is right to censor discussion in any form?

I do not have an opinion on wether TPV's should exist or not however after an open discussion perhaps I will be in a position to form one.

Is discussion frowned upon because it is supported by the TAT? if so why would the TAT want any of its activities censored from the public.

Very interested to hear your views on censorship Howard... if you are for it it does not bode well for your publication.

  9. Trouser snake kills Cambodian man

Phnom Penh (dpa) - A Cambodian man who took off his trousers, tied the legs at the bottom and wrangled a 2-metre cobra into them died when it bit him through the fabric, local media reported Monday. :D

Khmer-language daily Koh Santepheap quoted police as saying Chab Kear, 36, saw the reptile swimming in a river just outside the capital last Thursday during a drinking session and captured it in the hopes of selling it later in the day. :o

He tied the animal inside his trousers and a scarf around his waist, but as he continued carousing the enraged snake managed to get its fangs free and bite Kear three times on the stomach. :D

The newspaper reported Kear's last words as being "don't worry - it's nothing a drink can't fix" before he succumbed to the cobra's venom. :D

I keep a one eyed trouser snake in my trousers and its never bit me ! ,its scared a few girls though :bah:

I have one of those, still trying to tame it as it keeps spitting at thai girls :D

  10. Absolutely! It's the complainers of this world who stop total chaos.

The only good thing about complainers is that they raise their own blood pressure and are more susceptible to heart failure.

In our village..well in our street there are 2 houses at the end of the street that between them have 6-8 dogs and the noise they make at night is rediculous. Not all of them have collars and some of them walk down the street to crap outside our house..other peoples house too

    Spell checker?

  11. For those of you who cannot read, it is not about 10 baht.

It is about the fact that this school has no sports field and the management do not care enough to provide one, I have not counted exactly but there must be 700 pupils at Best now, with a probable average of 28-30k per term, x 2 terms in the regeon of 40, million baht a year, to say that they cannot afford to provide a sports field / car park without increasing term fee's is ridiculous.

Best is a has gone down hill since my children have been there in many ways, the decision to move them to a "Better School" is not something I would base on 10 baht I can assure you, it is based on the same reasons many are currently moving thier children away from the school, not having a sports field / car park and not being willing to make the resources available to provide one is just the last straw.

The school will never go bust on my or anyone else's decision to move our children, but at least our children will be educated in a school that cares enough to provide and maintain decent facilities and educational standards.

    Jsixpack

False economy? Perhaps, but to buy or rent the land and turn it into "a sports field or adequate car park" would necessitate an increase in BOTH your kids' tuition fees well beyond the 200 baht a month max you would pay to the current owner for parking (to pick up both kids).

Is this an assumption or do you have information to back this statement up?

So if it is so bad, posesses no sports field or car park, one must wonder why you sent your kids there in the first place don't you think ?

As for not being about Bt10, well wasn't that the final reason why you want to move your kids ? Nothing until then about a missing sports field.

As for not being able to read, well I beg to differ and say that it was all about Bt10.

Until the school lost the ability to use the land for parking and sports facilities they had a sports field of sorts, as Emcross said the school had acceptable staff and was clean some years ago it has deteriorated so far in many aspects that it is no longer acceptable to me, no sports field / car park is and not having the resources available or not be willing to allocate them is the final straw.

There are many factors to consider when placing or moving your children in school, as others have pointed out. I have highlighted the part of my original post that states whi I am moving them.

If you have a vested intrest in the school I suggest you take note of what people are saying, if you just want to fight then pi55 off and take it else where we are discussing childrens education here.

  13. However yesterday when I collected my two I parked in the ground at the rear only to see a sign that it would cost me 10 baht a day now to park and wait for them.

This land is not owned by the school however it it is used by the school for sports days even though it is just a dirt field.

Now I am not concerned about the 10 baht, what I am concerned about is sending my children to a school that does not have the resources to either rent or buy this land and turn it into a proper sports field / car park for the school.

The letter the Thai principal sent out stated that this was beyond their control, I see this is only the case as they are not willing to rent the land.

Now there are approximately 30 cars a day 5 days a week that’s 6000 baht a month, so you can assume that to rent the land would be in this region, at most I can see no more that 20,000 a month due to its location, I may be wrong so please correct me if anyone knows better.

The school has just lost 140,000 baht a year for my two children who will at start of the new term be attending either Satit or REP, I have yet to decide, so it is false economy for them without a doubt.

Again this is not about 10 baht as it will cost considerably more to move them to either of the new schools, however I just cannot justify sending them to Best any more when all they can say about the school not having a sports field or adequate car parking is "its beyond our control"

So we are voting with our feet.. goodbye Best Burapha!!

  14. The installation of a CCTV center between Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach is currently being studied. This project comes under the 2007 budget, and Ronakit said even allowing for the time taken to receive and evaluate contractor tenders, it is still hoped the cameras will be in situ before we leave office so that we still get our tea money.
