  1. Living around Lake Mabprachan I can assure you the current constant downpour is a godsend.

Levels were alarmingly low considering we are at the end of the rainy season, but right now you can see the level rising just looking at it!

Now the one thing I don't like is lightning.

I had roughly 100,000 Baht damage done yesterday by a direct lightning bolt hit.

Almost all network ports on equipment (modem, router, hubs, about 10 PC's, network printer etc. all blew up from the static and little blue sparks raging through my place. A few PC's blew up altogether, and each single piece of equipment was behind a UPS :o

I'm now down to accessing the internet on my laptop using a GPRS aircard, all the rest died on me...

I was hearing too, that so far there was not enough rain. I could not believe that, because I think there was (the statistics are confirming that as well).

So I wonder why the reservoirs are that kind of empty. Either the consumption was increasing strongly or...no idea.

I was not complaining really, but commuting to and from Rayong is not that fun in those heavy rains....

    Cheers

Commuting between South PTT and North Chonburi every day, indeed, yesterday evening a great view, but not very nice to drive on the 7 en 36.

This morning, suddenly almost got stuck in a mini-reservoir on the Motorway nr. 7......luckily I was driving only 80 km/h, but some <deleted> 'flew' in the lake with a 140 km/h..........

  2. At the beginning of the school year I signed a contract with a 1 year contract with a government school. The working hours explicitly state that my time I clock in at 8:30 and leave at 4:30. I asked the head of the English department if I had to attend the 7:40 morning assembly and she told me no before I signed the contract.

Within a month the director of the school mandated all teachers must attend the assembly every day. As each one of you can well imagine I was quite upset and I refused to do so. I reminded the department head what we agreed to verbally (like that will carry much weight in a court of law) and what was written in the contract that she and the director signed. No dice.

That was the beginning of the problems that I started to have at this school. There are two Filipinos who work there who get paid extremely well. The female Filipina has been there for 4 years and she gets paid as much as I do (34,000). The other Filipino is her boyfriend and he gets paid around 28k. Anyway they have been terribly offended that I would not attend the assembly and the female has repeatedly shouted at me in the office and has spread many rumors about me.

Yesterday I found out that all the teachers (do not know if in the English department or school wide) will be given an assessment by their peers and by the students. Dismissal can result if a teacher fails the assessment. I feel that I will get the axe because they are currently asking for the passport information of two farang teachers yet there is only position open (the German lady is leaving).

Anyway i will quote a few things from my contract that deals with termination and behavior:

The employee agrees to act in a decent manner as a good model teacher to the students : SMOKE ONLY AT THE PROVIDED SMOKING ROOM, PERFORM DUTY WITHOUT THE SMELL OF ALCOHOL.

The caps are included in the contract. For the record I do not smoke or drink.

The agreement is terminated on :

8:1 recession of the agreement by either parting serving a notice to the other party at least three months in advance

8:2 recession of the agreement by the employer in the case where an officially accepted physician has examined the employer and concludes that the employer should not be employed further on account of his health:

8:3 recession of the agreement by the employer on account of the employee's serious misbehavior or dereliction of duty without justification

I was hired directly by the school and not through an agency. I have not received any written warnings whatsoever from the school and many of my Thai colleagues has offered praise for my work ethics. Furthermore, I have passed both the 90-120 day probation period.

    What are my legal options?

Legally? Nothing. I do believe that the school needs to give you a 30 day (1 month) notice, but a contract can be broken for virtually any reason. Unfortunately here in the LOS no one cares if you are a well qualified teacher. A school resigning your contract is largely dependent on whether or not "they" (administration) like you. Good luck OP.

Not really true: Everybody in Thailand working under a contract can 'fight' an unlawfull resignation at the Labor Department. If necessary, they'll go to court with you.

  3. As near as I can tell, there *is* a system, but it is not designed to facilitate finding a particular location; rather, it is a system for government to label a property.

All the streets, names, sois, tambuns, amphurs things are for taxi drivers, WOW, door2door, etc.

If it's about mail, the combination:

    house-number, moo and zip code.

Mail from abroad might have 'Thailand' included.

My very old aunt usually the following address:

    (My name)

    112/107, Moo 10,

    20150 Chonburi

    Thailand

Never a problem. People who sent me cards with full addresses still didn't arrive.

  4. Gentlemen, you are really making complete fools of yourselves by continuing to patronize this place; and then posting about it here. What is it going to take for those of you who use this Shell station to understand that the ONLY way to stop this thievery in Thailand is to simply STOP BUYING YOUR FUEL AT THAT STATION?!

There have been enough reports of cheating posted here now to make it absolutley clear that they cheat. Knowing that, and continuing to go there, is just plain stupid!

You're so right, BUT this is location-wise, the most convenient pump to use when you go from South or Central Pattaya to the South-East direction of the dark side. Hardly any pumps on the way down there.

  5. I am teaching at a local private school. They are waiting for the papers for my teaching license to come back from Bangkok and then have to send the papers to Pattaya Immigration for my work permit and visa. My visa (1year non-:o runs out on the 17th. If Immigration is in the process of working on my Work Permit and visa will I still need to consider getting a short term visa until they are done with the work permit / visa?

Just wanted to verify in case the lady here at the school drops the ball.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Micheal

I suppose that you don't have a WP at the moment and that this will be your first one.

If your school can show that the application for a teachers' license is in process and that the WP will be the next step, Immigration might grant you a temporary extention (waiting for the paperwork).

If they're not that cooperative, you could go for another visarun on the 16th of this month, which will give you another 90 days of stay, provided that you didn't do this extra trip already.

  6. Can anyone recommend a good Thai language learning centre suitable for farangs here in Pattaya.

Location and contact details appreciated if possible.

  7. If you are spending 75 -100K baht a month you will be having a whale of a time! Sub 50K would be more realistic and even that is splashing out, once you get established and settled you will be surprised at how cheaply you can live.

As i told you before, there is no monthly "rates" here!

And so all the cheap charlies come out the woodwork... :o ...OP.. there appears to be an on-going competion between certain Farangs living in Thailand over who can live the cheapest and who is more "Thai"....there are individuals on TV who will criticise you for spending THB 75 on a cup of Starbucks coffee, telling you they can eat for two days on that amount, everyone to their own...

75K-100K month is a fair estimate, live the life you want mate, work on these numbers and if it turns out cheaper you have scored. Also living here for a while 1 year -2 years in a rented place is very sensible advice..

Best of luck with the move

If you live your life here as you're used to live it in your homecountry (ex. USA or UK), you might notice, that life is pretty cheap overhere (about 30% cheaper), but after some time you'll adjust your spending pattern, because you'll save a lot on daily expenses. After approx. a year, you live a different life and you might notice that if you would like to return to your homecountry, life is 30% more expensive as at the starting point.

  8. Farang neighbours who buy a great big puppy dog, then leave it alone all day in misery and lonliness. It barks, whines, and howls all day. I don't know much about dogs but I think it just wants attention. It's quiet and wags its tail hopefully if you walk past it, so it's not exactly a guard dog.

They don't care, they're rarely here. I doubt they've bothered to give it any training either so it can grow up into a nice dog.

I would feel sorry for it, other than the fact that we had a huge dog turd on our verandah today (despite walls and a gate - not yet sure how it got in). It would've been bad enough on the garden but a big turd on the tiled verandah just beside the entrance to the house is really too much to have to put up with.

It's insane to get a dog and then treat it like that - and create such a nuisance for the neighbours.

You must be living around my place!!

  9. Guys, can we please not discuss BGs, as the thread will just get terminated.

Buying two for one packs of stuff in the supermarket that costs more than two of the individual packs

    CB

Thank God, I really I was the only one and I didn't dare to talk about it. Isn't it amazing?

A 2-pack of orange juice THB 124.00 or 2 single packs of the same orange; THB 54.00 EACH

  10. Long Story, one of my mom's friend son was mistaken for Burmese, obvious they want tea money.

Last year, my friend decided to take a hike upcountry with 2 friends. None of them was carrying some kind of ID: my friend is Thai and the 2 friends were/are Birmese.

They stranded somewhere near Korat in a small village and asked for help at the poo-yaai-baan. This guy helped for a few days, but after some time the police came for inquiries.

The 2 friends were transported to Korat police station and later to the deportation camp in Bangkok. Both are back in Birma now.

My friend was lucky enough to know the Thai National Hymn and that is what kept him out of jail.

So, instead of taking your passport with you........learn the Thai national hymn :o

  11. I'm not sure, but it's impossible to start with a certain amount of money unless they don't hang up the hose after a customer.

If they just filled up a motorbike with some fuel, let's say THB 30, and you're next, they might just switch customers without switching off the pump.

If they switch off the pump in between customers the counter turns back to zero as soon as they pick up the hose again. So, sometimes it seems as if there is an amount on the counter, before the hose is picked up for you, but as soon as they do, the counter will be zero. That's something the staff can't do anything about.

    Yes or no?

  12. Obviously (I didn't check), they put the wiring along Beach Road under-ground.

Now they're thinking about taking care of the wiring of Pattaya Klaang, especially with the upper-arm thick power cable for Central Plaza on 2nd Road/Beach Road (under construction) coming up.

BTW, I think that most cables, causing the spaghetti-look, are ToT, TT&T, Sophon and other cables.

  13. i stay in pattaya but i want to go to Baan chang by publice transport

still have no idea how to get there yet.. anyone pls

my first thought is i may rent a car but we have an appoinment with house property there just a day after we land

so will take time before we get a car then :o

Baan Chang is a small village located along road number 3 between Sattahip and Rayong, approx. 50 km from Pattaya if you follow road number 3.

You could go by public transport........bus station on Sukhumvit Toad opposite Central Pattaya Road. www.nca.co.th (unfortunately only in Thai), but the name of the liner is Nakorn Chai Air.

  14. Understatement of the year: "Hands bound with duct tape. Possible foul play."

The fifth grade writing level of Pattaya City News shines through again.

Sorry, changing the name to Pattaya One didn't seem to cure their problems.

Judging from the decomposed state of the corpse, the male had been dead for at least two months and police are suspecting foul play. The deceased, aged about 25 but currently unidentified, had his hands bound in front of his body with duct tape, a situation which tends to make suicide rather difficult.

If you take a phrase out of context, it's always difficult to judge whether it's foul play or not. Pattaya One is there to report what happened and not to give their own interpretation of the facts. That's why we have ThaiVisa.com

  15. I have read a number of threads here to try clarify my own situation with regards to my WP, visa and status in Thailand - and am still a little confused.

My situation: I am an Australian Citizen as is my wife and young son. I have been in Thailand 4 years on a non-immigrant B visa with valid WP the whole time. I recently left my employment and am currently taking a break and looking for new opportunities. I have been advised that my WP must be handed back to the Labour Department within 7 days of leaving the company - or there are fines all round.

This is not a problem (although someone in the legal profession also told me to hold onto the WP so if a new job is realised it makes it easier to process the second WP - given that you don't drag it out too long, say 1 - 2 months max.)

My question comes from the visa. I got a new non-immigrant B visa last November in KL. I have been travelling in and out of Thailand every 3 months or so and last entered Thailand mid July. My wife and son got non-immigrant O visa's in April and also left and returned in July. Both sets of visa's were newly applied for and given within the last year - we did not extend existing visa's.

Now - someone told me that if the WP is given back the visa is also revoked with just 7 days to leave. Others have advised that this is not the case and that we can stay until the visa's in the passports expire (or we can even leave and come back for another 90 day extension if it is within the year of the visa issue date). Obviously we do not want to do anything illegal (knowingly or not) with regards to the visa's and stay in Thailand. Can anyone give us a definite response on our legal status with regards to staying for a month or two (to the existing date on the immigration stamp on our passports).

    Thanks for the assistance.

    There are 2 possibilites:

    1. Your work permit is 'connected' to your visa; this means, as long as you work, you don't have to leave the country every 90 days; validity of WP and visa are same, AND after the cancellation of your WP, your visa is automatically cancelled and you'll have to leave the country within 7 days. This case applies to most teachers and foreigners, working in a Thai company on a 'B' visa.

    2. Your WP is NOT connected to your visa, which means that these are 2 different matters. The work permit allows you to work and the visa allows you to stay. If the WP is cancelled, there is no consequence for the visa. This case applies to business owners with a 'B' visa or foreigners, working in Thailand on an 'O' visa.

If you want to be sure, please ask the nearest immigration.

  16. They've completed the ashpalting of the South section DOWN the hill towards Jomtien. But it only took them 2 days to do that after 10 months of no action.

I think the problem with the North side UP the hill is shops refusing to give up the bit of land in front of their building, most notably Manhattan's and Nirvana.

Yeah sure, Manhattan and Nirvana just opened their doors maybe 1 or 2 months before they started the road reconstructions. It's not just giving up a small piece of land, it's giving up the fact, that the 'new' road will pass on just a few meters/yards.

Other buildings buildings along the stretch have to give up their entrances and as far as I can judge, customers have to climb a ladder to visit the venues. Please don't blame the people who are reluctant to give up some stretch of road, but blame the <deleted> who failed to inform the venue-owners of the city-plans.

  17. A pretty old relative of mine, uses the following address:

    Mr. Farangtingtong

    112/xxx, Moo 10

    20150 Thailand

For several years I'm receiving het birthday cards and seasonal wishes.

Mentioning Sois, Villages, Amphurs and Moobaans is more an indication for visitors.

  18. Too late for me - good explanation and comment spot on - just lost 2 credit cards and a phone sent to 20260 instead of 20150, despite being sent signed for. On the subject of addresses can anyone explain how the Moo system works. I have a map showing quite clearly my village is bang :o:D:D in the middle of an area clearly indicated as Moo 6, but nobody seems to use Moo 6, they just seem to use Moo 1. Any explanations ?

It's hard to believe that the loss of 2 credit cards and a phone has something to do with the zipcode.

I'm living on the dark side and I'm using 20150 AND 20260. Of course, there's also mail I didn't receive, but that has nothing to do with the zipcodes.

  19. Get rid of the traffic that doesn't belong in the area between:

Sukhumvit, Beach Road, Thepprasit Road and Pattaya North Road.

Create huge parking lots on the dark side and offer free transportation into the "wildlife park".

Give the people, living in the Wildlife park a parking-permit and ask huge fees at the entrances of the park (tourists and visitors).

Employ some people who are going to take care of traffic and city planning.

Start to collect all motorcycles that are driven by people without proper license/paperwork.

If the cycle was bought on installments, take it back to the motorcycle shop, if the bike was owned by a private person, destroy it.

    In both cases, huge fines.

Re-dress the BIB; they look like these Michelin-figures to me.

Shut down the new Pattaya bypass along the railtrack.

  20. North pattaya is full of beer bars.I would agree that shutting many bars would result in the other bars being more profitable but maybe prices will go up.The good part of too many bars is competition.I dont accept that having too many bars results in less tourism for families. The beach road katoys and gangsters stop tourism, the corrupt police stop tourisam, the necklace theives stop tourism, shall i continue.

TOO many beerbars means TOO many competition and that's never good: Too many beerbars, too few customers with fixed costs. The few customers have to pay for these fixed costs, so high prices.

A few too many beerbars, a few too many competition is better: Competition is always good, and the nuber of customers mut be divided over the few too many beerbars; fixed costs are same same, so the prices are normal, because there enough customers to pass the break even point in a healthy way.

Just a few beerbars: not good at all: the TOO many customers have only a few beerabrs to visit. Since there are always customers, the prices will go skyhigh.

So basically, shut down half of the beerbars would be a good idea.

  21. It would have been smart to check the corkage fee before bringing and drinking your own wine, would'nt you say? :o

But I do agree that the fee is way out of line :D

Probably the staff has the strict orders to charge for each bottle that is brought from outside THB 950.

Nothing wrong with that, except, they forgot to tell the staff that it would only be the case with bottles of whisky or cheap Thai liqor, where the customer will get coke, ice and soda for THB 950.

Since this is Thailand and a bottle is a bottle, you're just lucky, that they didn't put ice and soda in your wine while serving it.

  22. Harsh Reality – Frank!

It costs to live in "Beverly Hills" and "Miami Beach"

When you want to be seen in "all the right places" among all the top socialites, politicians and captains of business who abound in "Beautiful Pattaya" you have to pay the price.

Remember – Pattaya is no longer a place of dirty beaches, working girls who inhabit Soi 6, Walking Street and Beach Road.

Pattaya is a place of elegant night spots and very expensive condominiums – thousand of them, to be sure.

Barely an hour goes by that I don't see people driving by on Pattaya's beautiful, tree-lined streets with Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Mercedes.

And just look at the quality of tourist and local resident! These are upper echelon, wealthy people. I venture to say that any tattoo they sport would cost no less than 20,000 Baht. Now that speaks of quality!

So, Frank – you have decided to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world populated by some of the most wealthy and important people who live on our planet.

You just have to pay the price!

You do mean Pattaya in Thailand yes?

  23. and i know it's jus a diagram but the water in that diagram looks like a whirling pool of liquid dengue fever.

That's not funny sir, not funny at all!! :o

So you do think, that a pizza company, a KFC, a Mc Donalds or whatever crap franchise from a spoiled Western World, belongs at a replica of some ancient Thai floating market? :D

Maybe the meaning of history has no value to Americans because American History is pretty young and people still didn't have the chance to get used to it. Yes I know, that McDonalds and KFC are about as old as the U.S.A. so that's why they think that if there is a historical replica somewhere a KFC, Mc Donald or Starbucks belongs there. :D

Anyhow, the funny thing in the OP is, that the picture shows a KFC and a Starbucks (or a Pizza Company) and the article reports the progess of the Ancient Thai Floating Market. It's more the contradiction that makes it funny. :D
