  1. Bottom line to all the dual systems, ignorance, arrogance, xenophobia, stupidity etc....WALK and take the cash with you.

YES, Yes, and yes! You got it mate. The international language that cannot be ignored.

Exactly, my New Zealand bank is giving me 9% interest p/a. Savings interest rates in Thailand(for Thais and Non-Thais) are a joke. My advice, only keep a bit of pocket money in your Thai bank ac. Keep your real dosh overseas.

As a fellow kiwi, I use my normal ASB , ATM card.

I draw out woteva if needed.

Costs 5 bucks plus 1%FX fee.

I get high unterest from RaboBank, 8.2% on call.

Not gunna lose it with starting an account here.

2 - 3% more than NZ FX in banks.

TRAVELLEX is the biggest rip off mob, neva even think of using them.

Normally I bring cash and change at Swampypool, seems best deals there.

Stay usually a cupla months, two three times a year.

With respect Sir, you are only a frequent tourist to Thailand and have no need to bank here. For non New Zealanders and Western foreigners that are full time residents in Thailand, your information is irrelevant.

  2. i dont like discrimination either, for the record.

but as far as a thai bank having a poster written in thai only, hey its their country and the national language.

does your bank back home in the west print their bank posters in thai? doubt it...

living in a foriegn country, you are going to face obstacles almost every day. it might be worth learning to deal with them more calmly. it'll make your stay here a lot more enjoyable.

There are many goody goodies on here; the above is a typical example.

I can almost smell the sweet scents of nectar and honey coming from their breath.

There is a difference between unnecessarily being impolite and arguing for justice. It is obvious that the OT was just making a point to the bank employee when he quoted, why not print in English these accounts are for Thais only, not really meaning to take such action. Any fool and see that.

Yet I am sure if improvements are made because of the actions of people like the OT, all the do gooders, holier than thous, would not be too proud to reap in with the benefits.

I wager that these holy than thous are the types that if they saw a child, lady or old person being beaten or molested in the street, would turn the other way and walk off without offering assistance. The it’s nothing to do with be, not my business, I’m keeping my head down brigade.

Why not be brave and chip in once in a while, your lives may become more rewarding.

  3. Tell them to come to Chiang Mai.

The city is great for old people that don't want to participate in anything too strenuous. Guaranteed to be quite, very few nasty bar girls, venues close early or don't open at all, so one can go to bed early without missing anything.

Maybe they can go sightseeing in Chiang Mai and experience the joy of having a genuine Thai granny massage in the town or shop at Tesco Lotus and dine at the exquisite MK restaurant.

They may wish to purchase a property and retire here.

Many old Farangs retire to Chiang Mai, enjoy a few years and seem to live on forever.

  4. These official accident figures are unacceptable and a disgrace. I would dread to imagine what are the unofficial road accident statistics.

Traffic laws are already in place in Thailand regarding drink driving, seat belts to be worn in cars, compulsory wearing of helmets on motorbikes, not to use a mobile phone whist driving a car, speeding, vehicles to be in road worthy condition, and reckless driving.

The problem is that the police are not taking these offences seriously and not strictly enforcing the imposed traffic laws.

Also penalties for traffic lawbreakers are not substantial enough to act as a deterrent, therefore giving no incentives for safe driving on Thailand’s roads.

I often hear Thai people say, no problem if I get caught breaking the law when driving, I just slip the Policeman 200 baht and say no more about it.

All this lax attitude towards the road traffic laws: equals: carnage on the roads.

  5. I reckon there's not enough discrimination against Caucasians. Round where I live on Phuket there's a load of Burmese labourers who get some very special treatment. They're not allowed to have mobile phones, not allowed to buy alcohol and have a strict curfew imposed on them. They're not allowed out after 8pm.

I reckon the Caucasians should be treated like that. That'd knock em down a peg or two, stop em from getting all uppity about wanting Thai bank accounts. Further more I'd like to see em all sent to live in those little corrugated iron huts with one toilet for every 200. Take away their pick-up trucks and make em all go round on bicycles wearing little pointy hats.

    Let em eat cake!

I think you probably are a Farang who is screaming out for help.

Maybe you had a tough childhood or were bullied at school.

My advice is that you seek professional help and keep taking the green tablets.

Good luck and hope you get better soon.

  6. You registered just so you could slag Brits - laughable

You knowledge of the troubles in Ireland show you are not very knowledgeable or intelligent - call yourself "Sober" - alkie previously were we?

BTW I am English and have defended the Thai's rights to prohibit all through this thread.

Yes, I hate the imperialist pos Brits with a passion. They have an exaggerated sense of entitlement everywhere they go. I guess my country has been the only one fit enough to shoot the bastards dead and make them leave. I hope the Thais wisen up and rise up, too.

If you want to read about troubles, here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles. If the Irish had sobered up and become a political force at the polls, they wouldn't have to subsequently taken to the streets like terrorists. Same thing happened with the Irish in Montana, USA. Irish miners had the numbers but were too drunk to vote on election day. Protestant mine owners won the day and Helena became the capital instead of Anaconda.

And thanks for defending the Thai's rights to prohibit!

You are pointing me at wiki to learn about the troubles in Ireland - Bhwaaaaaaa

I bet you think Bill O'Reilly is a serious journalist and Elvis is alive too?

As for shooting bastards dead - you do a good job of doing that to yourselves - I am totally for the British gun ban but hope it never happens in the USA - Darwin at work over there

Thanks for making me laugh out loud - the neighbours will wonder what is going on.

How did this post about a drink ban in Thailand sink to, Brits and Paddys slagging each other off.

I am not Irish, but a true Brit. I can tell you that it was Irishmen who built Britain, the roads, tunnels, blacksmiths, welders, London Underground was designed by Irish all highly skilled engineers, plus the most beautiful girls in the world. Grace Kelly for example.

Love the Irish sense of humour, better than some of the sour faced Brits I meet here often. some of the commentors here prove my point. If I had to have a farang neighbour, choice between Irish or Brit, Hello Mr Kelly, very welcome and after the drink ban we will have a pint together as good ole mates.

  7. I have been told that apparently the police in Lamphun have clamped down on any establishments serving or selling alcoholic drinks between the hours of 1.00pm to 5.00pm including resturants and if caught breaking this rule will be instantly closed down.

Many of the well known resturants in Lamphun are actually closing between the non serving drink hours because most of their profits come from beers and that it is not worth their while or the expense of opening.

    Can anyone confirm this?

  8. Even in the Uk Licenced premises cannot open when they want on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The majority of pubs/bars close at Midnight on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, as Christmas day is regarded as Sunday hours. On Christmas Day itself, somePubs/bars, but not many, can open at 11am and close at 3pm. The majority, if not most, do not open again until the morning of Boxing Day, on the 26th.

Yes, the UK also, has closing hours to respect and celebrate Christmas. The closed hours allow landlords/bar owners the time to spend with their families, to enjoy Christmas also.

There is more to life than open pubs/bars/discos, name them what you will.

The UK now has laws which allow 24/7 opening of licenced premises, however, thank goodness, very, very few premises take that allowance up. The numbers that do so, is negligible, in fact, virtually non-existent.

I tend to think that the OP believes that money is more important than life. Please forgive and correct me if I am wrong.

    :o

    Some facts of life:

Health is no1 and money no2.

Without money we cannot sustain our good health (Doctors fees, good food etc, nooky boom boom, someone to take care of us)

and without good health, money is of no use.

The best things in life are free is a myth, even the health care and for someone to take care of us.

So in reality our lives and our money are intertwined, one no good without the other. Money should be treated as lifeblood, lose it we are done for. Those who think differently are living in a cotton wool padded world.

The Thais use 3 methods of withdrawing cash.

Plastic cards, bank passbooks and the naive elderly farang.

  9. What is the problem?

The alcohol ban is only for 2 weekends and this being Thailand I am sure there will be some establishments willing to bend the rules and serve drinks.

We are not citizens of Thailand, so no point in groaning about who makes the rules and imposes this and that. We know the way things work here before choosing to come here.

There is always the option of drifting back to your own countries. There Farangs or anyone else can get as pissed and as merry as they wish anytime, anyplace.

  10. I owe you an apology. I didn't really believe your story, so I visited your condo this morning and managed to snap a photo of you being attacked.

Horrible. If you need any help, my brother in law is a professional starling exterminator. Please let me know, my brother in law said he's doing a promotion at the moment, kill three birds, kill one free.

  11. A proposed new law to boost patriotism in Thailand would be "chaotic" because it would require motorists to stop when the national anthem is played twice a day, lawmakers have said.

A vote on the Flag Bill proposed by a group of retired and active duty generals in the army-appointed parliament was deferred to allow a committee to study it.

"It would be chaotic if the bill had passed as it is now.

Traffic chaos: A new Thai law requires motorists to stop twice a day for national anthem

"So the National Legislative Assembly decided to set up a panel to review it," NLA member Wallop Tangkananurak told Reuters.

The bill's supporters say road traffic should stop nationwide when the anthem is played during the raising and lowering of the flag "to preserve tradition and instil patriotism in Thais".

"The national anthem lasts only one minute and eight seconds, so why can't motorists stop their cars for the sake of the country?," retired General and NLA member Pricha Rochanasena, 70, told Reuters.

"They already spend more time in traffic jams anyway," he said, referring to Bangkok's notoriously congested streets.

Most Thais already stop what they are doing and stand still when the national anthem is played on loudspeakers in train stations, parks and office buildings at 8 a.m and 6 p.m.

Pricha said the bill, which did not propose penalties for violators, would allow motorists to be patriotic too.

  12. I just (20 minutes ago) saw a pickup with the rear portion caged. Three beautiful ma baan dogs were in the cage. They will be starved and then killed for their meat. The starvation lasts for everal days. Death, I believe, is by hammer. The fresh-dog-meat market is located in a neighbouring province. The price per kilogram for the finished product is around 120 baht per kilogram.

Note that a ma baan is very similar to a husky. It is a smart animal. The people who sell these poor beasts, for around 20 baht each, or 70 cents US, do so out of poverty. Yet, my pet dog --also a husky-- yelped in sympathetic pain, as did other neighbours' dogs, as it watched and heard the disgusting capture (=sale) of the helpless animals.

My location is Phontong District, Roi-et Province.

Your dog and the others told you that their vocalizations were sympathetic? No, that's just a reflex owing to dog's evolution as pack animals. They certainly weren't passing a moral judgement.

The only part of the report that's even vaguely troubling is that animals are held for several days without food before being processed. If they're being starved to save on the cost of feed, that's reprehensible. However it might be important that the bowels be empty at slaughter to prevent spoiling the meat.

Other than that, what's inhumane about it? You cite the dog's intelligence; pigs are smarter and we eat them. People put all sorts of animals in cages for all sorts of reasons, some good and some bad. Cows are stunned with a blow to the head in many abattoirs before they're bled out; kosher and hillal butchery forbid even that.

What is certain is that Rover, like most meat, is quite delicious if prepared well. The rest is just anthropomorphic posturing.

Actually, there's nothing inhumane about it. The entire post, like the Holocaust, was just a joke. Drop by and have some dog steak.

    DROP DEAD DREGBAG

  13. need some advice on what could be a life changing decision.

I've suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs. Phone rings, I answer, someone hangs up. She started going out 'with the girls' a lot recently although when I ask which girls it is always "Just some friends from work, you don't know them". I always look out for her taxi coming home but she always walks down the drive although I can hear a car setting off. As if she has got out of the car round the corner. Why? Is it not a taxi? I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her.

Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth but last night she went out again and I decided to check on her. I decided I was going to hide behind my car which would give me a view of the whole street so I could see which car she gets out of. It was while crouched behind my car that I noticed rust around my rear wheel arch.

Should I take it into a body repair shop or should I buy some stuff from the local auto shop and try to repair it myself?

Last week your wife had one of those migraine headaches and I had to take her home early. Being the first time I actually saw your area in daylight, I too noticed the rust on your car.

It didnt seem too serious and my advice is, have a go at repairing it yourself.

  14. Who is us? You may be confused. The drug user only gets the death penalty in an indirect way. Here in Thailand they give the death penalty to drug traffickers who prey and profit on the backs of the weak.

So I take it you believe in the old "eye for an eye" mentality? Because I don't. You may disagree with what the drug dealers did, but to say they deserve to die is pretty barbaric IMO.

    THEY DESERVE TO DIE

  15. There is no need to cover the dirt, in which you plant the lotus.

Clay will finally settle on the ground. This may last several weeks.

Important is: not too much fish and no fish which like to dig in the ground to look for food. Small fish is better than big fish. As a general rule: the total length of all your fish should not sum up to more than 20 cm per m3 of water. Difficult fish are koys, because they like to dig in the ground.

Use a lot of plants. Ideally you should have one third as a swamp, with about 10 cm of water for reeds, one third deep enough for lotus (60 cm) and the rest as deep as you want. This should make at least two thirds of the surface covered with plants.

Like this you should get clear water like in a Polaris bottle.

I have a small pond like this in front of my house. I installed a pump and a filter system to keep the water clear. About 2 month ago, ants entered the electric system somewhere and there was a short cut. So I switched the pump and the filter system off. After more than 2 month, the water is still clear. Btw: I have more fish in there than allowed by the book, but it is a small species, the biggest are about 8 cm long.

Now I try to implement the same system in a bigger pond of about 2000 m2 and up to 2.5 m deep. There is no chance for a water circulation or a filter system for a pond of this size. Work is still in progress, the water is not yet clear as in a Polaris bottle, but it clears up. Initially I had a visibility of 30 cm, now, after 6 weeks, I am at 70 cm and it gets better daily. Even so there are often kids playing in this pond.

    Regards

    Thedi

    WHAT?

  16. I would love to hear Thailand's logic here. The thing I don't understand is do they really think foreigners are beating down the door to get paid here illegally in baht vs their home countries currency?

FWIW I just went to Cambodia to get my 3rd tourist visa this year figuring it would be nice and easy. They grilled me way harder than they did my past 2 times and it ended up taking 4 days total. The lady made me have proof of where I was staying (I have an apt) but couldn't prove it. I had to quick go find an internet cafe and book a room for 1 night for $2.47 and show her the confirmation. After that the "financial department" (person who opens the cash drawer and puts my $35 in?), was closed and I had to come back the next day and re-apply. When I got one in Amsterdam this summer it took <1hr.

I'm 23 and have more or less passive income coming in from the internet that I'd be making no matter what country I was in.

This is sorta a rant and I wholeheartedly agree I'm not a tourist, just someone who likes pumping money from my home country into the thai economy and don't see why there is not a visa for people like me.

There is a visa for you.

If you are the sort of person who already has a business as you quote and likes pumping money from your home country into the Thai economy and you are not a tourist, why dont you just use the official Thai Immigration system, apply for a non Immigrant visa and save yourself a load of hassle? Whats the problem?

  17. If you are in love with a bar girl and are sensible enough to want to verify she really does love you, then see how enthusiastic she is about deliberately trying to conceive a child together. :D

Few bar girls are so unscrupulous as to deliberately go this far. By this I mean if they have premeditated plans to get your money and then leave you and have no genuine interest in you.

Tell her you will legally marry her, buy house etc (if you must), after baby is born. :o

Tell her you don't want to legally marry anyone if she cannot have your baby so this must come first.

...but to keep in line with Thai tradition make no bones about doing the whole wedding ceremony but no marriage registration bit.. She can't complain about this.

Don't confuse this with an accidental child to a bar girl who only wants your cash, they are very irresponsible and can have several accidents.

This is not an option for everybody (eg: if you just do not want a kid /another kid etc.. or if you are both too old etc..) but it is a useful tip.

....BTW get a DNA test too :D

And an HIV aids test of course.
