  1. I have a PDA with Windows Mobile 5 and I always have problems with checking emails and using IE on a GPRS connection.

Wat are your WORKING GPRS settings?

I have a DTAC Happy card and a 1-2-Call card (so both prepaid although I do not know if that causes any problem).

I have problems with both, though with DTAC I can hardly check my emails.

Error message: Cannot connect to the incoming mail server. My settings are correct. Using the 1-2-Call card in the same phone works but often it takes about a minute or two to get over the "Connecting" status to the "Logging on" status in Mobile Outlook.

I tested the DTAC card in an older PDA with Windows 2003 SE. Everything works fine.

So I again used the new PDA and did not use "Auto configuration" but instead manually set up an GPRS connection with the data provided by DTAC. Again it is not working.

With 1-2-Call the auto configuration tool on Windows Mobile sets up 3 different GPRS connections (Internet, WAP, Proxy).

I had problems using the "Internet" settings so I tried "WAP" which was a little better. Most times I can check my emails (even if it takes a long time).

But then again I have to disconnect and reconnect with the "AIS GPRS Internet" connection in order to use the internet browser.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Did anybody of you have the same problems and know a solution?

Or could you please post your working GPRS settings for either DTAC or 1-2-Call.

Also which GPRS authentication method do you use? PAP or CHAP?

And which slot? Class 8 or 10?

    Thanks a lot

  2. Yes, I also have DNS problems from time to time.

Then I switch to OpenDNS or back.

At the moment I am not using any specific DNS.

But again, my original problem was that I could not open any website but I could using email, pinging, downloading etc.

I tried using the IPs (provided by the successful pings) instead of URL. It did not help.

So I don't think that was a DNS issue.

Though for a few days now everything is working almost fine it still pi..es me off sometimes.

Although I know that this is Thailand I am still refusing to accept that they (TRUE, TOT, CAT, whoever) are not able or willing to solve these problems.

What about all these internet cafes in town? I never had a problem in one of them. Seeing the frequency of my problems statistically I should have experienced a problem at a cafe's computer.

Do they have any special provider I do not know of?

  3. Does anybody know where to buy Stubby Holders / Coolers in Bangkok.

I am looking for just a small quantity - maybe 50-100.

I guess the small quantity could make this more difficult since I don't want any cooler with commercial prints on it like "Drink Chang" or "Visit Samui".

I am looking for single-colored black or white coolers and I would like to have a logo printed onto them.

    Thanks a lot

  4. Halogen is right.

I have seen them at Rock Pub in Rachathewi.

    Check out this website http://www.therockpub-bangkok.com/index.ph...mp;Id=538634947.

Also check out the band's schedule.

Rock Pub is a very good place IMHO.

All this Pearl Jam, Nirvana stuff is my music.

I am waiting for them to play some New Model Army songs.

Strange thing is that the Rock Pub is almost always empty.

Does anybody know of other locations with similar live music?

  5. No server signature or anything like that at all.

Due to the wrong spelling of this error message and as cali mentioned the fact that this happens also in ie this is a message coming directly from TRUE.

The last two days I did not have any problems at all.

So I guess I just have to live with that - always keeping in mind that this is Thailand.

It is just in the nature of "Western"?? people like me to strongly believe that there should be a solution for all these internet problems in Thailand.

But I feel that TRUE and TOT and whoever have a different opinion about that. :o

  6. I know.

    Internet in Thailand sucks.

And I am almost used to the low quality.

But until a few minutes ago I had a - at least for me - new situation.

I had no problem with websites hosted in Thailand at all.

But again international websites could not be opened.

Thaivisa.com could not be opened - but "pinged".

At the time these problems occured i was downloading a Linux distribution from a server in America.

Suddenly I could not access their website anymore.

Firefox just gives me a "The page cannot found/Error 404" after a while. (this is the exact phrase given by firefox???)

But i had no problem with the download or with performing a ping on the American website.

    I restarted my modem.

    I tried another modem.

    I tried OpenDNS

I tried the DNS server addresses of TRUE

I tried without using specific DNS addresses at all.

Is there anything else I can do?

Or do I just have to live with that since this is Thailand?

    Any ideas?

  7. Wow. Ok that is even worse.

At least I am not alone.

So maybe this is a good reason for buying an Universal Power Supply.

The only problem is that the ones you can buy at BigIT only provide backup power for up to 30 minutes.

That is definitely not enough in Thailand.

I am going to check that out.

  8. Today we had the second power outage within the last two weeks.

Both times it happened during heavy rain and lasted to 1 - 2 hours.

Is that only happening here on Ratchada (near the new Cyber Towers) or did you guys experience the same?

Since this is Thailand it does not bother me too much.

I am just suprised since I cannot remember that this happened that frequently last year.

  9. I liked the "beergarden" at Suan Lum very much.

Personally I don't care so much about the shops but do you guys know something similar to the beergarden at another place in Bangkok?

    Any similar alternatives?

Live music, lots of food outside, people watching, same atmosphere?

  10. Thanks for your answers.

Now I think this issue might (besides of the crappy internet in Thailand) be caused by my modem/router.

Today I SUDDENLY could not open www.thaivisa.com and most other sites I tried.

    But I could open e.g. www.google.com

So I did nslookup as suggested.

    nslookup www.thaivisa.com
    Server: fritz.fonwlan.box
    Address: 192.168.178.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:	thaivisa.com
    Address: 203.174.84.82
    Aliases: www.thaivisa.com

    nslookup www.google.com
    Server: fritz.fonwlan.box
    Address: 192.168.178.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:	www.l.google.com
    Addresses: 64.233.189.99, 64.233.189.104, 64.233.189.147
    Aliases: www.google.com

So, I did not see any problems. The URL has obviously been resolved.

I also tried the DNS service by OpenDNS.

     nslookup www.thaivisa.com
    Server: resolver1.opendns.com
    Address: 208.67.222.222

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name:	thaivisa.com
    Address: 203.174.84.82
    Aliases: www.thaivisa.com

Then I put away my modem and used the Billion modem that came with the TRUE package.

    And now it is working?

So, it seems as if I have an issue with my modem.

But still, why can I ping/nslookup URL but cannot open them in my browser?

    Does anybody have similar problems.

Ok. I will test the Billion modem now.

Let's see how long this is going to work fine.

  11. Better solution: manually assign the OpenDNS addresses in the DHCP settings of your router. Thai DNS'es provide false information, especially when it concerns blocked websites (this causes numerous other problems, but the Thai ISPs couldn't care less).

I have a FritzBox Fon WLAN 7050. Although I feel that this is a pretty good modem/router it is not possible to enter the OpenDNS addresses directly by using the router's web-based administration. So far I did not dare to apply these changes by using a terminal service and special command-line commands.

it sounds like trues' DHCP server is not giving you a preferred DNS number when it should do, you could check this by going to a command prompt and ipconfig /all....if it is not then you could try flush and register dns and see if that works... ipconfig /flushdns to flush your dns cache the ipconfig /registerdns to re register it...

    might work

i did a ipconfig /all. how can i now check the preferred DNS number?

Does anybody know an alternative to opendns? because even if using their dns addresses i cannot access certain websites.

  12. Hi all.

I have TRUE DSL Internet in Bangkok.

In order to simply surf the web I have to enter the ip addresses of an DNS service in the TCP/IP properties of my wireless connection.

In my case these are the ip addresses of opendns.com.

Without doing that I cannot access any website by entering the URL. It works (of course) when using the ip addresses of the website.

    So, what is going on.

What happened to the TRUE DNS service.

Why can't my URLs be resolved?

Does anybody experience the same problems?

  13. Did anybody experience the same problem?

When sending sms to Germany the recipients complain about receiving scrambled messages.

It seems as if they get a message that has been automatically translated to Thai. But since German phones cannot display Thai they get some crazy characters instead.

    I have DTAC Happy.

This cannot be a phone specific issue since I tested different mobile phones.

  14. Hi all.

I have Windows XP English, but I am German.

So in my regional settings in the control panel I changed the "language for non-unicode programs" to German.

But now I cannot use my Thai-English Dictionary called "ThaiSoftware Dictionary" anymore.

Furthermore I cannot access the settings of my graphic card anymore.

All I see in these and some other programs are questions marks.

    Do I understand that right:?

Obviously these programs are not programmed in UTF which means I cannot use them anymore - or on the other hand I have to stop to support my German non-UTF-programs to get my dictionary work again?.

If so, does anybody knows a good English-Thai Dictionary for Windows that is Unicode-based?

    Or is there another possibility?

    Thanks a lot

  15. I am looking for a place to escape from Bangkok for a few days.

It should not be too far away (maybe like up to 4 or 5 hours by bus/train or less).

Moderately priced and - this is important - with Internet access.

The purpose of the trip is - of course - to relax but still to be able to get some work done.

Personally I like places like e.g. Koh Samet. I have been to Ao Wong Duan Beach and had a bungalow close to the beach - but no internet.

So I prefer this kind of accomodation (bungalow, nice guesthouse) to any nonpersonal big hotel or hotel-like beach resort.

But the place I am looking for does not have to be on an island or in a beach town.

I heard a lot of nice things about Kanchanaburi.

So, does anybody have any suggestions?

    Any ideas welcome.

    Thanks a lot

  16. I just wanted to book a standard room at the Cititel Penang for my coming visa run in the second week of 2008.

I read a lot about this hotel and about people fighting over the prices in this forum. People were stating prices of up to 3000 baht.

Then I came across this website

    https://www.rsvn2u.com/ReservationCTP/Booking801.aspx

The price quoted is about MYR 130 which is about EUR 27 or USD 39 or THB 1181.

Now I wonder if this booking website might be a fraud.

Considering what people wrote about the prices of this hotel this seems to be too cheap.

On the other hand this page is linked to by www.cititelpenang.com.

And the same website states the price for a standard twin as MYR 360.

Even if you deduct the price for the breakfast from this amount ... what is going on here?

What is all the heck about this hotel. Seems to be good-priced.

Try to get something decent for 1200 Baht in Bangkok.

Anybody already used this website successfully?

Is that real or a fraud?

  17. I wonder where to go for Christmas (24th, 25th) and New Year's Eve in Bangkok.

And I am not talking about just having a nice dinner.

Where do you go to party, meet other expats, talk, drink ...

Are the Irish / English Pubs the best choice?

Or are there any large special events?

    Thanks a lot

  18. Where would you go in order to obtain an ED visa?

    Vietnam (HCMC, Hanoi)

    Cambodia (Phnom Penh)

    Malaysia (Penang, KL)

What would be your choice (or maybe already have been your choice) if you wanted to spend 2 or 3 nice days having good food, doing some sightseeing and enjoying some nightlife and on the other hand having a pretty smooth visa experience at the embassy/consulate?

    Thanks a lot

  19. Thanks for your answers.

Of course I checked out these websites before posting.

But there is no website for Penang and KL only shows the holidays in 2008. :o

I know about Dec 5 and Dec 10. So I guess for Malaysia these are the only days the consulates are closed.

But since it is the King's birthday I thought they might close for more than one day.

I just wanted to check out if someone of you guys knows more since "This is Thailand" and you never know.

By the way ... I guess working at a consulate is a great job. You get the holidays from two countries. And I am sure there is nobody working after 5pm.

    Thanks

    Tom
