To show that our prevention is not anti-thai racism => this current story is exactly similar to Colin Powell brandishing samples of the sadam hussein massive destruction arms which never existed. Police will brandish DNA samples which will not prove anything.

ok, this makes sense. they have had a lot of leads, many of them unexpected. they tried to get lucky at first, following their hunches and promising leads, and those failed. now it's time to back off, organize and put all the evidence together, and systematically see exactly what they've got. 15% of the evidence has not been analyzed.

it's how I typically approach difficult problems, and I doubt many other organizations would have approached that differently. furthermore, the Thai have usually had good luck with this approach.

while it is undoubtedly true that CSI murder investigations are not the strong suit of the Thai police, true that many if not most cops supplement their (meager) income with other "services", and true that big families are inordinately powerful in Thailand, as soon as DNA entered the picture scapegoating and cons went out of the picture - it become a black and white world.

except for the perpetrator (and his friends), everyone in Thailand wants the murder solved.

If I was the killer I would of fled to Cambodia by now and paid off the local authorities there so they would hide me.

lab: cannot guarantee it - only FBI can do that

lab: we ran more tests and found Gm^ag and Gm^afb1b³ haplotypes

cop: <deleted>?

lab: they're Chinese heritage, including Thai

cop: ok! forget about the FBI - we don't want to pay their freaking bill

this could happen anywhere

second, taking DNA tests from women. imho very clever:

- perpetrator is scarce if not long gone, esp if he has a little cash

- mitochondria is passed from mother to offspring unchanged

- mother probably are not running away - and would be conspicuous if both disappeared
