  1. Hello Everyone, Have been living now in CM for 7 yrs. However, I served in the USAF in Khorat 73-74. I came back as a civilian and lived here 75-78. Now that I'm retired I'm working on a book which is a compilation of short stories based on my experiences during those yrs. One of the stories is about a trip I made to Vientiane. I am curious to know if there are any expats living here that were affiliated with CIA and/or Air America during the secret war, perhaps living in the Udon area. As part of my research I'm considering a trip over to Udon. Any information or leads would be appreciated. Thanks.

  2. I'm a retired expat from the US living in Chiang Mai for 7 yrs. I also lived in Thailand 73-78. I'm currently writing a book and part of it includes the secret war in Laos. I would like to know if there are any retired expats living in the Udon area that were around at that time and who may have been affiliated with the CIA and/or Air America. Also if anyone could provide me with perhaps some names of bars, restaurants, etc.that expats frequent should I make a visit there in the near future. Any info and help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  3. These are (2) established golf leagues in Chiang Mai. If you're a regular golfer and would like to join a league that organizes weekly competitions then you might want to check out these two leagues:

Chiang Mai Social Golfers which plays Lanna on Monday's and Mae Jo on Tuesday's. For more information please visit their site at:

Sanuk Sabai Social Golfers which plays Alpine Golf Resort on Tuesday's and Summit Green Valley on Thursday's. For more information please visit their site at:

  4. Yes, there are players that are members at either Green Valley or Alpine, and there are those that are members at both, and there are those that are not members at either course but do play as a member guest and receive a reduced green fee. The 'social' part is more about friendship, and having a few beers afterwards. Whereas, the actual stableford competition is for the enjoyment of the game as well as for the competition. It's particularly attractive during May and June during the Golf Festival period whereby both GV and Alpine have a reduced green fee of 1,000 Bht plus caddie. The post was only meant to let those that are golfers know that there is a league that plays regularly at those two courses. Those that wish to play are not required to join the league as members, although the annual membership dues are reasonable...50 Baht.

  5. My wife and I are retiring to Thailand and will be living in BKK the first year. We are avid golfers and would be interested in any recommendations regarding available golf club yearly memebrships. Or would it be less expensive to pay as you go so as to play various courses? Any responses appreciated.

Yes its good advice not to buy a lifetime membership if you are not sure where you will finally be living. However if you intend to play a lot you will find it quite expensive.

One option would be to 'hire' a years membership to a golf club. Basically you buy a year off a member, its not that hard to do. When you get here pm me and I can suggest a few places to play and how to go about getting a years membership. A friend of mine has done this both at Muang Ake and Bangkok GC. I could probably find out how much he paid if necessary.

John, thanks for the reply. We never intended to buy a lifetime membership, but was thinking in terms of a one year club membership. Not sure how that works in Thailand. If we find a course that we really enjoy I wouldn't mind saving some $$ versus traveling all around to different courses. Also would be nice to have a locker to keep clubs, etc. instead of carting them around everywhere. Again, would appreciate any input you might come up with. Feel free to e-mail me back at [email protected] Thanks again for your response.
