  1. To take a taxi to the airport book a taxi by calling 02 9114444 and ask for a big car (the green and yellow 4WD looking cars, izusus I think). Costs an extra 20 baht on top of the meter. Very reliable company - can call the night before for early bookings, or call when you need it - usually 20 minutes wait.

Thanks very much to all for your replies- really helps.

    Sylvafern.

The isuzus and booking sounds great. Do you mean only 20 baht on top of the total meter journey cost which would be a miniscule extra charge? Or perhaps the meters are at a higher level anyway per KM?

Also do you think these vehicles would be capabale of taking say the following or if not how much might you uess?:-

    3 x adults, 2 x children, 2 x bike boxes, 1 x ski bag, 8 x medium size 15kg bags?

  2. Thanks very much for the info- very useful.

Does your reply mean that you can get a taxi direct from arrivals at the airport? I was under the impression that you had to get into some sort of bus or coach first to take you to another place to then get a taxi. This would be a bit of a drag when one has family and loads of bags etc after long intlk flight and even having to worry about all the bags whilst doing all this. What is the situation please?

  3. I expect all my questions have been answered in some other topics but I would like to get some latest info. and advice if possible please.

We are travelling (hopefully airport still open) in March for 1st time to and from new BKK airport.

We generally have loads of luggage + the children and from Don Muang normally took 2 x taxis each way.

Can some members please advice about the following.

A)I have heard of some difficulties with strange bus/taxi system now going. Could be really bad for us after long intl flight with 2 or 3 young kids and all luggage etc. Can you still get a taxi from the departures area as we used to do in Don Muang? Or any other suggestions such as a large mini van at a reasonable cost? We go to central BKK.

:o How long does the journey generally take from airport to somewhere like Grand Hyatt area in Rajdamri at say 10.30pm from airport?

    C) How much might taxis cost for this trip and are there toll ways to pay?

    D) When subsequently departing and needing to get to airport at about 5.30pm on a weekday how much time would you suggest for travelling from Grand Hyatt/Rajdamri area to airport?

    E) Anyone know of a good mini bus or mini van type with driver we can book in BKK to go to airport for large family and lots of luggage? Any contact info. would be welcome.

    F) A Query not connected to airport. Can anyone suggest/recommend a good value and good service hire car firm for hiring a car for between 2 & 4 days at a time from central BKK. Maybe a company that will drop the vehicle off at our condo and collect when hire completed. Maybe a company that can also offer some sort of mini van also?

Thanks and best wishes to all members.

  5. To KIAKAHA

'You say Thai Airways are on Customs St, you can get your discounted airfares back to LOS from here.,

CAN YOU GIVE US ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE DISCOUNTED AIRFARES (i presume for thai passport holders). I emailed to Thai airways in NZ 2 times and no sirprise- got no replies.

But, IMHO, the less thai related stuff you do, the better, helps accelerate the integration into your new habitat

ABSOLUTELY. WE ARE NEW PERMANENT RESIDENTS AND BOUGHT KIWI & ALL BLACK SHIRTS FROM LAST XMAS! INTEGRATION IS ABSOUTLEY NECESSAY AND MY WIFES ENGLISH IS EXCELLENT ALTHOUGH CAN STILL DO WITH IMPROVEMENT. WE WERE IN UK AND WE MIXED WITH ALL BUT SHE HAD SOME SUPER THAI FRIENDS WHICH MAYBE DID INTERFERE WITH HER 'ENGLISHNESS' AS THEY WERE HER REAL FRIENDS ETC. WE HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT MAYBE IT IS BETTER FOR HER NOT TO MAKE THAI FRIENDS FOR A WHILE SO SHE WILL HOPEFULLY DEVELOP MORE WITH THE KIWIS AND OTHERS. I EXPECT WHEN GOING TO KINDERGARTEN (our kids are very young) she will meet up with lots of other mums and make some local friends etc.. I just know it would be nice for her to have one or 2 nice Thai friends eventually.

  6. Thanks stevero for such an informative and interesting reply. We really appreciate it and I understand where you are coming from with your warnings etc.

I certainly expect we have no interest in the Thai 'society' rich types as there morals and outlook on life would generally be awful to us. Also the type who had worked in the naughty industry in Thailand would normally not be the type we would mix with (but I am not demeaning those people)- we just would not have anything in common with them.

When I say university educated I generally mean went to uni in Thailand and had a decent education.

  7. Hi.

Our family including Thai wife and our young children are moving to Auckland in NZ near Albany.

We would like to be introduced to some Thai people in Auckland.

Preferably university educated but not obligatory provided they are nice bright people.

If anyone knows anyone it would be great to at least get an email so we could say hello.

Also any other info on 'Thai' in Auckland area would be welcome

    Thanks

  8. 22 reported dead in Bali explosions

    Associated Press

    Saturday October 1, 2005

Bombs exploded almost simultaneously today in two tourist areas of Bali, killing at least 22 people and wounding almost 50 others, police and hospital officials said. The victims included foreign tourists.

Indonesian President Suslio Bambang Yudhyono said terrorists were to blame and warned that more attacks were possible.

"We will hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice," he said after being briefed by top security officials, urging everyone "to be on alert."

    Article continues

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The blasts at a crowded seafood restaurant on Jimbaran beach and a three-storey noodle and steak house in downtown Kuta came nearly three years to the day after twin bombings on the resort island claimed 202 lives, many of them foreign tourists.

The al-Qaida-linked militant group Jemaah Islamiyah has been blamed in the October 12 2002 attack and was suspected in today's bombings as well.

The bodies of 22 people were counted in two hospitals - 11 at Sangla and 11 at Graha Asih - officials there said. Close to 50 others were admitted with injuries, many of them serious, including eight Australians and two Americans.

"It's a horrible scene," said a receptionist, Komang, at Graha Asih.

The nationalities of the dead in both hospitals were not immediately known.

The first bomb appears to have gone off at Jimbaran beach.

"I helped lift up the bodies," I Wayan Kresna told a local radio station. "There was blood everywhere."

Another explosion hit the three-storey Raja restaurant in the busy outdoor shopping centre of Kuta, about 30km (18m) away. Smoke poured from the building, which was badly damaged.

The bomb apparently went off on the second floor of the restaurant, said an AP reporter, who saw three bodies and at least five wounded. There was no crater outside the building, indicating it was not a car bomb.

The exact number of blasts was not clear. Some witnesses said they heard at least two explosions at each location.

Since the 2002 Bali blasts, Jemaah Islamiyah has been tied to at least two other bombings in Indonesia, both in the capital, Jakarta. Those blasts, one at the JW Marriott hotel in 2003 and the other outside the Australian Embassy in 2004, killed at least 23.

Western and Indonesian intelligence agencies have consistently warned the group was plotting more attacks. Last month, President Yudhoyono said he was especially worried the extremist network was about to carry out more attacks.

"I received information at the time that terrorists were planning an action in Jakarta and that explosives were ready," he said today.

Ken Conboy, author of an upcoming book on Southeast Asian terrorism, said today's bombings had all the hallmarks of Jemaah Islamiyah.

"It looks like Jemaah Islamiyah," he said. "They saw the 2002 Bali bombing as their only true success because it inflicted foreign casualties and the collateral damage weren't Muslims."

  9. Two teenage boys found murdered in wooded lane

Audrey Gillan Tuesday September 13, 2005 The Guardian

Police handout photos of murdered schoolboys Steven Bayliss, 16, left, and Twood Nadauld, 14, both of Finchampstead, Berkshire

Two teenagers were found murdered in a wooded lane on Sunday after an anonymous phone call to police saying there were teenagers lying injured. The dead boys were named yesterday as Steven Bayliss, 16, and Twood Nadauld, 14, both of Finchampstead, Berkshire.

Postmortem examinations showed that Steven was killed by an incision to the throat, while Twood died from knife wounds. Two 18-year-old men were arrested by Thames Valley police shortly after the bodies were found side by side in the lane in Wokingham, Berkshire, on Sunday night.

Man, 18, remanded on boys' murder charge

Press Association Thursday September 15, 2005 The Guardian

An 18-year-old was remanded in custody yesterday charged with the murder of schoolfriends Steven Bayliss, 16, and Nuttawut Nadauld, 14, who were found dead in a wooded lane on the edge of Wokingham, Berkshire, on Sunday night. Thomas Palmer appeared before magistrates in Reading charged with the stabbings. Royston Hine, chairman of the panel of magistrates, told Mr Palmer during the four-minute hearing that he would be remanded in custody to appear before Reading crown court on October 3 for a preliminary hearing. No bail application was made.

  10. Can anyone advise whether what we plan to do is perfectly ok with no problem?

    British dad and thai mum.

We have first child with UK & Thai passports.

2nd child born August 2005 just got British passport.

We are going to UK in a couple of weeks for about 6 months.

We would prefer to get Thai passport when we return to Thailand.

Baby would then return to Thailand on Brit passport and get 30 day visa stamp, then get Thai passport and later leave on Thai passport.

I hope no problem but could the following be an issue?:-

Baby will return to Thailand on return ticket to Thailand (so no return to UK).

But we will be travelling on from Thailand in a couple of months to Oz/NZ.

Also any problem if eneters on UK passport and maybe no record of him leaving if he leaves on Thai passport??

    Any other concerns??

  11. The first photo near the front of the topic on page 1 is Miss Thailand- the one with the big extending chin and looking like kathoey. I think some people may think some photos later in the topic are Miss Thailand and that would be misleading as the person in those photos looks narak/suai- But I think they may actually be of a ladyboy! Just seems that some people may be saying that Miss Thailand is a great looker but they may be referring to the wrong person/photo.

Obviously it is in the eye of the beholder so one cannot state that someone elses opinion is wrong- There are many beautiful women who do not attract me but I can still appreciate their beauty.

However this Miss Thailand is so poor that it really amazes me- A really ugly chin, ugly nose, strange shape face and horrible hands!

It is hardly surprising that she has failed to make a success as a model (although many models can be strikingly ugly whilst having something enchanting or alluring).

As someone else says I am sure she is a wonderful person, if anyone going into these type of contests can be. I suspect they end up completely vain, neurotic and narrow minded.

    Well never mind.

    C'est la vie

  12. It really amazes and astounds me who they pick as winners of Miss Thailand.

The one I saw on TV tonight is just plain ugly.

    Killai Mak ching ching.

They seem to want to pick a girl who has western type features - big nose with bridge etc.. The one just won also has a chin that sticks out like Jimmy Hill (if your from UK you will know who I mean).

I get worked up with Thai people who think that Western is good, lew kung better, white skin better etc etc...

I have lew kung children and I love them and think they are cute as ###### cause they are my kids Thais think they are suai & narak mak mak mak mak and to be honest I see 100's of Thai kids that are more cute.

I watched the Miss Thailand with my wife and got so worked up at the end and I said I got to go and write about this on a forum.

Be interesting to hear other opinions.

    Chok Dee.

  13. The funny thing is the Thailand is caught between  a rock and hardplace.  The fact is they need English speaking people to teach their young however they make it so hard for people to come to the Kingdom.

Not just for teachers, I.T, Sales, ETC...  The simple fact they say how much they someone has to be paid based place of origin is crazy.  I am from the US and they say I need 60 per month.. Well I lived there for 11 months on less than 40k No Problem.

Simple standard for teachers is a state run Class and test though an respectable origination. (yeah yeah if it can be found.)  Say 4 week of basic English to Thai teaching and curriculum, that also has basic Thai and how to live in the Kingdom. Make it expensive enough and strict standards to week out the bad apples.

Then biased on their test scores tell what level of English they can teach.

Also putting a rule of English must be the native Language of the teacher. (exceptions can be made) This would weed out all the white folks that can speak a little English.

Just ideas I know this will never come to reality  so I am just typing I know...

Your english is really appalling. It is almost nonsense. Spelling even worse. I only mention this due to the subject you are supposed to be writing about!

  14. Can you help.

I am married to Thai and I have a 1 year non immigrant 'Thai wife' visa that runs out shortly. Due to circumstances we prefer not to renew this visa again in this way as we do not expect to be in Thailand in future for more than 30 days at a time or if we do I can just get a normal non imm o visa which gives 90 days at a time which will be more than enough. Renewing the Thai wife visa is too inconvenient due to having to visit suan plu on 2 dates - The date to reapply and also the having to return 45 days after this date to get the visa etc..

    MY QUESTION (at last):-

My visa runs out in September but it is likely that we may prefer to leave Thailand this time up to 30 days later.

Can I apply/buy a 30 day extension at Suan Plu immigration on the non imm Thai wife visa??

And how much does it cost?

    Any problems?

  15. I have a Thai Wife husband visa at present that runs out on October 9th 2005.

I am in UK at present with wife returning in early August.

I have just had a new passport and visa is in old passport that was returned to me.

I have had thai-husband visa for 3 years with a view to applying for residence but this idea has now been curtailed as we will not be living in Thailand long term. In fact it is most probable that after this next trip I will only need to return to Thailand for 30 days maximum. So visas may not be an issue after early 2006.

However for this trip it may still be a problem and i would prefer not to have to do visa runs etc..

I would prefer not to renew my thai wife visa as my movements need to be flexible during this period and I would prefer not to have to be in Thailand around Oct 9th plus the date when i have to return which is normally about 45 days later.

    Questions:-

    A) Initially can I just return to Thailand with both passports and show them the visa in the old one or do I need to do anything else- any problems?

    B) Re A it will allow me to stay in Thailand until Oct 9th. Can I extend this visa for a number of days just by paying a fee without going through the rigmorole of renewing the actual visa? How much and for how many days?

    C) I could apply for a normal non imm visa and that would at least give me until beginning of November when entering Thailand. That probably will not be long enough. How long can i extend the 90 days and for what fee rather than doing a visa run?

    D) If applying for non imm visa in UK from somewhere like birmingham consul can one get the visa to start from a later date rather than the date that one applies?

    E) Is there any problem for me having 2 x visas that are working at the same time such as my thai wife one and a non imm one from UK? May be less of a problem as the new one would be the only one in my new passport.

    F) Any other suggestions or ideas?

  16. in my opinion Bupa Thailand is awful.

The prospectus seems fine and even the docs re submitting.

Wait until you get your full policy docs and you will find out you are covered for squat diddly.

If sold like this in UK or the west they would be prosecuted big time.

They could not sell policies in this way in the West now

    Bupa Thailand- YUK!

I think you would be better off getting a long term travel insurance policy from your home country- Much better off for cover and also for cost.

  17. Thanks for suggestion but

I would prefer not to use the embassy as my embassy- british I find to be a pain in the proverbial.

    Also:-

I prefer not to waste a great deal of time which normally occurs at this embassy.

I think they would ask for docs to be left with them to collect at another time which would not be good as considerable travel etc..

I suspect their fees would be extortionate (they normally are).

I am not at all sure that they would certify all documents (only maybe the ones they consider appropriate/connected to embassy matters).

    Any other suggestions please?
