  1. I have 3 bank accounts with Siam Commercial Bank. I opened them soimply by showing them my passport.

I got an account with passbook ad Debit card same day.

Recently I went to open another account with SCB in Petchaburi, I was told by a rather gruff woman that I had to have a work permit.

So today I went to another SCB bank and asked them and they said that it is a new regulation, that Farangs cannot open up an

account without a work permit unless thay own a house !!! Unbelievable

Renting a house is not good enough! (Nor isstaying in a hotel)

Has anyone else come across this, and is it really true?

  2. How long can he and his family live on the 1.2mio Bath? That was not very clever he will loose his job and further tea money sources.

I bet he will not lose his job,

He will dispear for a while then come back and confess all. then he will be considered an "all round good egg"

    and pardoned!

Not sure what the other police officers would do to him though.

  3. My apologies for being so ignorant about this.

But is 1 post 1 new topic

or each and every reply to a toipic/

Also how can we establish how many posts we have made?

From time to time invites to ThaiVisa .com parties are issued to those who have mde 5 posts!

  4. "Abhisit proposes to fix that by amending the constitution should he assume the PM post. That could mean yet another referendum." Time magazine interview.

His thoughts from when he thought he was going to walk into power on the back of the last military set up.

Hope he has the balls to tell PAD and the generals/elite clique where to go and change the constitution back to the agreed 97(?) model. If he can achieve that and deliver his promised education and other reforms to the Isaan people then he maybe a very good solution for the present mess. I wish him the best of luck.

Yes I agree, I wish him and Thailand the very Best, Just Hope the ousted ex PM does not hold any trump cards to interfere

  5. mY WIFE TOLD ME TODAY THAT MANY PEOPLE IN THE NORTH MAKE WHISKY ESPECIALLY FOR NEW YEAR, AND THAT THIS IS ILLEGAL.

MANY COUNTRIES HAVE THEIR OWN ILLEGAL WHISKY OR MOONSINE AND NORMALLY IT IS ILLEGAL TO MAKE IT, BECAUSE IT CAN BE

QUITE DANGEROUS, IF THE PROCEDURE IS NOT CARRIED OUT PROPERLY, THE LIKELY HOOD IS THAT METHANOL WILL BE PRODUCED INSTEAD OF ETHANOL.

HOWEVER THE QUESTION THEN AROSE "IS IT ALSO ILLEGAL IN THAILAND TO BREW BEER?" OR EVEN TO MAKE WINE?

aNYONE KNOW THE ANSWER OR WHERE I CAN FIND OUT PLEASE?

  6. What it all comes down to "hasher69" is the mental ability and disposition of your GF.

If she is a hoe and all her friends are hoe's she will take you for whatever she can. She will be getting all the free legal advice that that can collectively come up with.

If she is not (a hoe) you should be OK. The fact that she is married (and still married) is in your favour.

In fact the village ceremony where she went through "a form of marriage" with you makes her a bigamist and thus a criminal.

A marriage does not have to be officialised to be categorised as "a form of marriage" By the same token you also went through "a form of marriage" didn't you :o

Paying of the sin sot does not commit you to anything.

I suggest that you forget about the Baht 100,000.00, try and redeem the money from the land and forget her. The last might not be easy though.

Was not a hoe, became one, then came back to me, then left and became a hoe!!!!!

When she gets pissed she displays a disconcerting ability to be extra friendly to some other Farangs.

So all in all Have to get rid of her, and yes it will be difficult but probably a neccessity

will start to make my escape plans now.

Many thanks to you for your info, amnd also the all the others

Do I have to somehow close this thread or just leave it ?

  7. so they have something to talk about on the barstool in walking street tonight

And who is making sweeping statements, generalisations, stereotyping and quoting uban legends now ...Obviously TV posters who dont move in your elite "social" circle are all Farang drunks who spend all their time in bars.

    His pomposity knows no bounds....

    Another one of those:-

"I've been here 15 years, and my wife is a Hi So girl who is university educated and never been in a bar in her life, and we have always lived in peace and harmony, and there are never any family disputes or dramas..... That only happens in the seedy areas of Pattaya and Nana Plaza where all the farangs are beer swilling, bot bellied sex pats and all the girls are low class, retarded whores.... and so on, ad infinitum..." :o:D

To the OP, I would say that if she is still legally married to another farang, you will have absolutely no problems with breaking up with her, and you owe her nothing. As others have said, get the land sorted, and regardless of what Mr Dekka007 might say, I still advise you to watch your back.

    Good luck :D

Thank you I will watch my back

and try and sell the land, but these are hard times not easy to sell land.

Also a point to mention I am not living in or near her village, which is way up North. so should be OK from attacks in the night or otherwise by her relatives.

Maybe this will not end in a break up but it is good to know where I stand.

Today she is not speaking to me because I went out with the lads last night fore a few beers and some. got in at 1:L30 am

    !!

  8. One thing I forgot to mention is that she is still married legally to a Farang.

They split up a year before I met her.

She had been duped by a kiwi boyfriend , she was not working in a bar then, but since when we broke up she went and worked

as bar girl. we then got back together. Crazy of me I know , but the affairs of the heart and all that make us do these things.

So although I had a village ceremony , for face vale, I cannot be considered married to her.

And any lose of face has already ocurred when she separated from her first and only husband

So the land is my only problem

  9. She has no legal claims as you were not legally married. As others have said, common law marriages are not recognised in LOS. I'm not an expert, but in my experience a vast majority of marriages in rural Thailand are not legal, which is why so many Thai men walk away from their families with impunity. Your girl friend would be well aware of this, and she is only putting pressure on you because you are a farang.

As GH said, we don't have any background on the breakdown of your relationship, but regardless of who is the 'guilty ' party, you should proceed with extreme caution.

Forget about trying to get the sin sod back, but you may want to consider using it as a negotiating ploy.

The ownership of the land doesn't sound too good and it really depends on how 'street wise' she is and whether she will go to the lengths of hiring a lawyer. If she does, you may well have problems.

It is not uncommon for Thai ladies to go to the BIB and and claim that they have been assaulted by their farang boy friends. They will give the BIB a small bung and you could have a lot of problems.

It is also relatively cheap to arrange for you to suffer more permanent damage.

Moving on quickly may be the best and safest plan.

    Thank you very much.

It may not come to a break up but it is best to be prepared.

I will endeavour to sell the land or Company then I will be in a better position too move on. Hope a braek does not come before that.

The reason for the argumants is is she accuses me of not wanting her and also she accuses

me of wanting to go with other Thai "Ladies"

I only ever "Window shop" never go off with anyone but the Thai "Jealousyfactor is very strong.

So strong that they end up believing what they thought about in the first place. Maybe it is a "self fulfiulling prophesy"

  10. Thnx for all the comments.

As far as the land goes she is a share holder but has signed a paper so that I can get her replaced

But I take the point I must be careful that she does not rally around the other share holders and get me voted out.

    Anyone want some land ??

What is this about getting the "sin sod" back?

never heard of that, maybe I could say that because I am entitled to getting it back that the family keep in in lieu of

    any further pAYMENTS.

  11. I have been living with a Thai Girl for 3.5 years.

We had a Thai village ceremony, I paid the Mother 100,000 baht

Now when we have had an argument or 3 she tells me that if she leaves me that she will go to court and make me pay her #.

The reasoning is that she has lost 3 1/2 years and has no prospects for the future.

I bought 11 rai of land in a company name (leaving the legalities of that aside) can she make me give her half or aproportion of that land

and also make mepay her a lump sum or monthly payments?

  12. You mention that you will open an offshore bank account in the IoM – are you aware of the EU Withholding Tax provisions? If you are an EU citizen, then until you can prove that you are permanently resident outside the EU, all banks in the IoM and the CI will apply these rules. The tax rate on offshore interest is currently 15%, but it will go up to 20% next year, and then to 35% in 2011. It even applies to Swiss accounts.

    Guderian,

an innocent question with intended pun: what kind of EU-citizen would be &(*(%^ enough and open under prevailing legislation an offshore account in the EU, Switzerland or the Channel Islands to share with the taxman his/her hard earned money? :o

Well, the OP for one it seems. :D

I'm glad that I'm not the only one paranoid about the taxman's "good" intentions!

But really, where else can you keep accounts with relatively limited funds in highly reputable banks? After the EU Withholding Tax thing became apparent, I looked at the options. Yes, Barclays have a private client's account available in both Dubai and Singapore, which did not sign up to the EU Directive. The snag is that a minimum investment of £1 million is required! :D A shade beyond my limited means, I am afraid.

I expect I could bank offshore in Burma with the local branch of Northern Rock, but that didn't much appeal to me even before the current financial panics. :D

Are you perhaps suggesting, Naam, that I should keep all my money in my SCB SFF account? Again, no thanks.

Sorry, I must be overlooking the point of your reply, for a Brit with less than a million quid in ready cash, I don't see the alternatives while still being able to sleep easy at night?

Please educate me if I am missing something.

    Regards.

You can open an account in Dubai, with HSBC. I opened an account earlier this year.

However the 1 problem in doing this you must do it in person, but then just take your passport and fill in the neccessary forms and ina couple of days all will be done.

    Regards
