  1. All of you who are living with these minor shocks may be at risk for future health issues. When I was teaching for the Navy, we were required to send any student who experienced a minor shock to medical to be checked out. We (instructors) thought it was a little over the top but the medical people insisted these shocks could do damage to the heart if not kill you. http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/in...y/overview.html

  2. real estate agents (term used loosely) here seem to have the same schooling/training as the local whiskey shop vendors. They woke up one morning with an idea of how to make money. In the former case a small cash investment was required while in the latter the local gossip committee puts them on to a potential customer (buyer or seller) they take either, and offer their acquaintances a portion of commission if they point them to other potential customers. The more learned get on the internet and try to do a deal with individuals who are in the market, either way. It is not unheard of for the sellers asking price to be inflated so as the excess monies will revert to them. The statement above "strange business real estate" may qualify as the understatement of the week.

My wife is selling some land in CM and is having her lawyer brother handle the sale. In responding to an offer on the land she wanted another half million to close the deal. She's paying her brother 3% from the sale. He asked her if he could get more than what she is asking if he could keep that. :) No, was her reply.

  3. I've got a Canon digital camera that still displays images off the card but will not take photos or display an image on the screen

Any ideas where it can be repaired

Alyhough I know it might be cheaper/easier to jusy buy a new one

Is there space on your card for more images? I know this sounds stupid but I also know many people never bother to download their images.

  4. Yes, it seems the Thais really love their cooking oil. I've been trying for years to convince my wife that she doesn't need all that oil (in a nonstick pan) to fry it. Another issue is portion size too, I've taken control of scooping out the rice just so we aren't served triple portions. It would be nice if someone came up with a cook book on healthy Thai cooking.

  5. That is actually why I posted this one. The one by muggins vanished and another couple were closed due to bickering. Too bad really, when people don't know how to write without pissing somebody off and closing an otherwise interesting debate. If topics are too bland (like this one) they're lucky if they receive 6 replies.

This one's getting very lucky.Thaivisans with time on their hands with nothing to do generally do it on Thai Visa. Is UG doing something today?

I'm at work so that is why I am replying.

  6. Hay! Composters,

I always wondered why people here burnt everything and thought that composting would be a better way of doing things, however where I come from leaves and weeds etc easily compost themselves either heaped in a pile or left where they fall. I also thought that the dry dusty soil here would benefit from composting.

Well we just got some land recently and have just arrived to experience life in rural Thailand. The teak leaves are dead dry when they fall and we had piles of them covering much of the land. I soaked a few leaves in a bucket of water but it just didn't seem that it was going to be a very easy or succesful job, so I gave in and as instructed by the family, we burnt the lot, so quick and easy.

So at least now I can understand why it is like it is.

I will however get around to building a proper compost heap with 3 seperate sections and roof, and will hopefully prove myself right, even if it does take much longer and hard work.

put a mower to the dry leaves, this will chop them up to smaller bits and then you can use it as mulch.

  7. I went to my doctor here in Maryland and he said it was due to my sinuses, he gave me something clear up my sinus but instead of taking it I remember I had a netti pot (not sure about spelling) and after running the salt water through the nose a few times everything got better. I now do this often just to stay clear.

  8. If you can scan your negatives with a "film" scanner and not a flat bed scanner with a film adapter, you will get better prints. However, you need to know what you're doing, and some negatives may not scan as well as a print from a negative, such as negatives that are over exposed or under exposed. It can also be quicker to scan negatives but again it depends on what type of scanner you are using. You may be able to find a good used film however, they are probably selling because the maker is longer updating the drivers.

  9. ZERO, my wife was a school teacher and her father had passed away, she was living with her mother at the time before we married. In the 20 plus years we have been married I can say we may have sent the family a total of maybe $10000. They know we have our own bills to deal with and know my wife isn't a push over when it comes to handing out money. In fact what we did loan out was paid back by her brother. The gifts for the holidays and helping a student pay for school I don't count.

When and we move the Thailand my wife and I will be living on the other side of the country, far far away.

  10. I don't know if it is my imagination but both those shots appear to have a colour cast

when viewed alongside each other. The first to the red side and the second cyan.

After your cheerleader photograph, are your sure it is a "girl" in the sequins?

Yes I agree, but what I was trying to indicate was the softwares rendition of a RAW file "straight out of the camera" . Both these shots have absolutely no adjustment from me. I'll need to tweak the images a bit as I pointed out before final output but the contrast, exposure, shadow/highlights rendition is amazing. And remember, this is the LE version: the "Pro" version is yet to be released!

    p.s. definitely a girl (I think) :o:D

I downloaded one of your files and gave it a quick going over. When I am printing I much rather start with images like the ones you posted, this gives me more information to work with in post production and I am able to produce a much better print.
