  1. A word of warning on the HTC's longer term, I have a HTC and its battery died, my wifes friend has a shop at tuk com and replaced it, the normal price is 1200 baht for the battery, they said HTC are one of the most expensive for parts and batteries, the usb socket also needs replacing and only HTC can do it, none of the repair places have the part, HTC want 2000 baht plus for the socket which other phones is a 100 baht replacement part.

Not doubting your experience but I've had my Desire for over two years without any problems...when you produce millions of anything, there are bound to be a few duds in the mix but one's chances of buying that one is small (but still sucks if it's you). As for batteries, like any large screen phone with a fast CPU, batteries drain quickly, however, I bought a set of two replacements and a charger from a Hong Kong based eBay storefront for US$ 15.00 (including shipping) and now just always carry with me a fully-charged extra battery around with me. (I believe other Desire owners here have bought extra batteries from this same store.)

Indeed. Both my wife and I bought the 2-pack 1900Mhz battery for $20 via Amazon. I'm an active member of the Desire (and now the Sensation) dev community and can attest that there is no running issue with battery problems or the USB socket. With that being said, if you compare part prices for the HTC over say, Thailand's favorite phone-of-choice-Nokia, you bet HTC is going to run you a little more. But, if you want a smartphone, Nokia is not your solution ;)

  2. ok, so from the HTC Thailand website:

    ระบบเครือข่าย4

       HSPA/WCDMA: 850/2100 MHz
       GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

so, would work 2G/EDGE no problems. 3G is a bust. dude, i'm always right. ask me anything ;)

The HSPA/WCDMA is 3G and the Desire will work on DTAC 3G networks and True networks where available as they use 850 but not with AIS which uses 900. DTAC doesn't determine the frequencies allocated to specific phones so can't put the blame on them that HTC is using 850. ;)

Indeed. But, I just wanted to make sure the guy who asked the question understood that the Desire S will indeed work for AIS One-2 Call. you just aren't going to get 3G.

  3. ok, so from the HTC Thailand website:

       GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

  4. Sorry but you are wrong.

3G of Desire S sold in Thailand works on 850 Mhz, not 900. So it doesn't work on AIS 12call network (for 3G).

The problem seems to be Dtac who brought this phone here to use its own 3g network (850 mhz).

if you knew the answer, why did you ask in the first place? i'd be interested to know the origin of these Thai versions. do you know where the dealers are getting these 850-only models?

  5. Hello,

Can you confirm that HTC Desire S doesn't work with AIS 12call in Thailand ? Because Ais is working on 900 and the Desire S phone only works on 850 ?

    Thank for info.

pretty sure the Desire S will work just fine with AIS. should definitely work with 2G. these are the Desire S specs:

    2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100

    as per AIS website:

    - 3G service is offered on 3G900 MHz frequency platform spanning Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Nakornpathom, Samutprakan, Chiangmai, Chiangrai, Konkaen, Nakornratchasima, Chonburi, Phuket, Songkhla, Cha-um, Huahin and Pranburi.

-The AIS 1-2-Call Thai mobile network operates at 900Mhz, which means that it will work fine with all Australian or European mobile phones.

do you know what country the Desire S originates from? it's not from the US, is it? anyway, the Desire S runs on 900, you should have no problems. i owned the straight Desire for a year that was bought in HK. pretty sure they are the same band coverage on all the Desire versions.

on edit: ok, the Desire and the Desire S are the same innards. pretty sure it works like a beast. 3G? not too sure. AIS didn't have 3G here when i had the Desire.

  6. my wife and i are getting ready to ship off and we have a boatload of clothes we no longer need or want. i'd hate to see this wind up in some greedy hands and sold for profit. any one know the best charitable place to drop off and won't wind up for sale in the back of the Soi Boukaew market?

  7. 10th floor of Mike Shopping. great parking, elevator up. i go up to Mike once a month and have actually been up to the pool floor 3 times in the past month (for photography). it's clean and never busy up there. 80bt for punks, 100bt for punters.

  8. heh, so around midnight they decided to announce that Sek was not going to show up and told every one that if they want to leave, they should leave.

    good stuff, Thailand, good stuff...
