  1. "I restate my respect, admiration and appreciation of the vast and huge majority of police officers and police departments in the United States that each and every day do a very tough and demanding job professionally and well.

I restate that citizens acquire a greater gratitude and societal bond with police when something happens such as 9/11 when the police in the extraordinary performance of their duties conduct themselves with instinctive courage, bravery, fortitude, dedication, sacrifice, selflessness among many additional positive attributes.

I restate that my own rare interactions with police officers have been expressions of mutual respect and benefit."

That is very decent of you Publicus. To honor the majority of police as in your quote, yet without full knowledge of all the relevant facts of the Ferguson incident, throw the officer allegedly involved under the bus.

Would a little point of law which goes something like "innocent until PROVEN guilty" have any bearing on your apparently firmly held beliefs associated with this matter?

  2. VENICE.

One of the first cities in Italy to engage in international commerce after the devastations of the early Middle Ages.

Venice established a maritime empire by 1300 and a territorial empire from the early 1400s.

Adapting to changing circumstances, its economy remained vibrant into the seventeenth century. It experienced little social turmoil, while its literary and artistic achievements were rivaled only by those of Florence and Rome.

For most of its thousand years of existence, Venice was free and independent.

  3. "a caucasian male apx 35yrs 180+cm 85kg lean/muscular build wearing a tan baseball cap, faded light blue T shirt, faded cream coloured cargo style shorts jumped from between the parked unnattended vehicles at that location, pulled his pants down to his ankles"

Wow, it's great that your wife had enough time to be so observant.

"He saw us arriving and as I started running after him".

It was my description of the offender.

  4. With such good information, the least you should do is report this incident to the Thai Tourist Police.

This is exactly the kind of thing they can help with- file a police report in English, then translate to Thai, and liason with the regular police.

Thanks McG the BIB are on it.

  5. CM coin/metal museum?

Daoyai - I didn't know it was there until today either. It looks like some kind of Govt office building, set back off the road. Has a small guard hut on the left as you walk through the gates. See map.

  6. A rather troubling incident occured today Tuesday 020712 1210pm along Ratchadanmoarn Rd (Sunday walking street) see attached map with location of incident pinned.

My Thai wife was walking towards Thapae gate, and at the vacant shopfront area opposite the CM coin/metal museum a caucasian male apx 35yrs 180+cm 85kg lean/muscular build wearing a tan baseball cap, faded light blue T shirt, faded cream coloured cargo style shorts jumped from between the parked unnattended vehicles at that location, pulled his pants down to his ankles, yelled at her "You, you, hey you" and proceeded to jerk himself off, distance betwen farang & wife about 2 meters.

Wife ran away and reported incident to me, I was waiting at a coffee shop near Thapae gate for her. She was quiet shaken & stated the offender possibly had a French or other European accent.

Went back up to location, farang was seen to be looking through the tinted windows of one of the parked vehicles, covertly looking at pedestrians walking on the footpath on the other side of the parked vehicle,

He saw us arriving and as I started running after him and yelling at him to stop, he jumped on a old Honda Dream motorcycle reg 431 and took off down the road. Quite sure it was a Chiang Mai plate.

Thought I would post this as I get the feeling this is not the first tiime this scumbag has done this in public. It could have been anyone's wife or daughter who was accosted, or may be in future.

If anyone knows of this caucasian male or motorcycle as described, would very much appreciate a PM of his and/or motorcycle's whereabouts.

    Thank you.

  7. "Thai police arrest Brit with foetuses for black magic"

Another brilliant piece of journalism. Foetuses are now working for Thai police? Did the Brit get arrested by the foetuses, because the Brit had black magic?

Or did the Thai police get paid with black magic because they arrested the Brit who had the foetuses?

  8. I hope the injured person will recover ok.

One only has to stand (well off the road) around Soi 1, 2 or 3 on Nimminheiman Rd up towards the Rin Kham intersection to view the speeds vehicles enter Nimminheiman Rd off the "super highway".

Also watch the traffic heading towards the green light at Rin Kham from Nimmin Rd, especially if there is a faint chance of making the green light right turn onto Huai Kaeo Rd.

They fly along on the incorrect side of the road overtaking the other 2 lanes of vehicles, forcing oncoming motorcycles and vehicles way off to the side, to make that right turn!

Be very careful if you are turning left onto Nimman from Huai Keao Rd..

Why is that police box situated at the Rin Kham intersection..??

  9. At least one of them has the obvious title on his shirt so all the others know who to ask their probable hundreds of traffic law questions.

Such as "does my kid also need to wear a helmet while he/she sits on my work motorcycle's petrol tank after I pick him/her up from school?"

and many, many more that would be pertinent & timely..

An important thread, thanks to CMNR for kicking it off.

  10. Interesting if the traffic police will be ordered to first attend a internationally recognized police academy for 6 months or so to gain accreditation as a law enforcement officer.

From graduation, would selected officers then attend a traffic operations course?

The laws are there to be enforced but what we need are skilled, competent and ethical police officers to do their best to reduce the daily carnage and general madness on the roads.

I have heard other rumors too that indeed senior police have been directed to bring policing here into the 21st century, together with regulations on officer's behaviour and strict enforcement of laws.

Here's a question - why do we not see younger age police officers around the place? Many other countries seem to have far younger officers in uniform, yet here we usually see officers around 35-40 years and older.

  11. Surprised no one has mentioned Sai-Mui on Soi 11 Nimmenheinen (adjacent to Su Casa).

Great home made ice cream, the ladies there make it themselves.

Sure they could assist you with your inquiries.

No affiliations at all with the shop/owners, just a happy customer.

  12. I returned the Navman (mentioned in a previous thread) and purchased a new Garmin Nuvi 40 whilst on a recent trip to Australia.

Unsure if there is a similar Garmin in Thailand, possibly sold under a different model number?

    Here is the Nuvi 40

    https://buy.garmin.c...D=401&pID=92773

Now trying to find out the best way to locate Thailand map for it, whether CD or preferably Micro SD card map.

    Any advice appreciated

    Thank you.

  13. "Aussie lecturers teach Thai students how they do things"

A rather sad indictment of the current state of the world isn't it? Australian based lecturers now teaching Thai students about the environment?

Australian businesses especially the mega mining Co's are some of the world's largest polluters and destroyers of the environment!

A litany of terrible events can be easily found through an online search.

Here is just one: "Facing the possibility of legal liabilities amounting to billions of dollars due to environmental damage, BHP-Billiton secured a deal from the PNG government that indemnifies the company against all future compensation claims"

    PNG Environmental Disaster

  14. Greetings.

A search around the few stores I thought would carry sighting (mirror) compasses - north side of moat, KSK & Airport Plaza - appear to stock only cheap China made models.

Does anyone know where in town to buy a decent quality compass, and hiking/topographical maps for Thailand/northern region?

    Thank you.
