  1. Hi,

I gonna go to trang on next month with some friends and would like to stay for 5 days in the island in front. I don't know which one to choose : Koh Libong, Koh Muk, Koh kradan, Koh Lao Liang, Koh Sukorn, Koh Petra or Koh Meng. i would like to rent a bungalow on a beautiful beach, rent motorbike, have a choice of restaurant and bar. Which one has more possibility and activity?

    Thanks u so much ! :)

A lot of the bungalows & resorts on those islands close this time of year due to the weather. The ferry crossing can be pretty treacherous if caught is a storm.

You might find places open on Koh Lipe and Koh Jum.

    Best of luck !

  2. I have been very far removed from NCAA football since moving here. I am extremely happy that we'll apparently be getting at least a couple of games a week on ASN. I won't be staying up, or getting up, past midnight to watch the (USA) afternoon games 'live'. I'll watch replays of those games later. But I may very well get up early on Saturday or Sunday mornings to watch (USA) night games, if they carry those.

I am a hopelessly addicted NFL fan. I WILL be up in the middle of the night to watch those games 'live'. Back home, I NEVER missed an NFL game broadcast. My wife knew that Sundays were off limits all day for any 'honey do's' during the season; as were Monday nights.

I usually watched at least one NCAA game every Saturday; but it wasn't a "must" for me, as was the NFL. Still, I love college football. The enthusiasm of the crowds and players; and, of course, the 'preview' of future NFL stars, was great. It will be great to get back into it.

Favorite teams? Strange, but, since I was a kid, I've always been a fan of a bunch of "red" teams - #1 USC; #2 Oklahoma; #3 Alabama; #4 Ohio State. I also respect what Papa Joe has brought to the game; so I do root for Penn State, and I'd probably say they're #5. I always hated Michigan; and hated Notre Dame until Charlie Weiss became Head Coach there. Now, I guess Notre Dame is #6. Other teams I constantly root against are the Florida schools - Miami, Florida State, and Florida.

Sadly, I can't get excited about my alma mater. Northeastern University is a bottom of the barrel school in football.

Who are the favorites (and most hated) for you guys?

As a kid, my best friend's parents were USC Alums, and we used to do the picnic outside the Coliseum with all the other families, throw the Nerf football around. Pretty fond memories.

Old coach McKay always knew what the spread was, thats why the Alums loved him. SC would be up by 24, but had to cover 30, the starters were still in come the fourth quarter.

But I went to a UC school of which did not have football, so feel a bit affiliated with UCLA.

So as a Southern Californian, I'll put USC #1 and UCLA #2 after that I like Texas, and a relatively recent team I have come to like (in the past 8 years) is Boise State, they typically have this wide open offense that's entertaining as hel_l to watch.

  3. Harleyclarkey, this is why your opinion is subjective.

You lived here 17 years ago, when sure, Phuket was probably safer than it is now.

Well, some of us live here now and sure, although there is crime going on (surprise, surprise)this latest instance has nothing to do with foreigners or tourists. Neither did the shootout in Patong. I go to work here everyday and feel completely safe except for the bonehead driving going on which is much more dangerous to me than crime (although some of the driving techniques should be labeled criminal).

So why be so alarmist toward foreigners and tourists, it's not necessary. Check it against the crime in Jamaica, another very popular tourist destination, or Honolulu

  4. Is Chase back for another year? Love to see my Sooners play in the Big 12 again this year.....

You sound confused, or else you are confusing me..............

    1. Chase played for the Missouri Tigers

    2. He now is a rook for the Redskins

    3. Your Sooner's QB is named Bradford

  5. Happened to catch NFL Total Access on ASN last night (Tuesday) running from 10 to 11:30 pm....

Skipped forward in the TV-based True programming guide to today (Wednesday), and saw Total Access is scheduled to air today from 9:30 pm to 11 pm... Those were the only air times listed in the 24 hours ahead TV-based guide.

It would be nice if they could manage to have a consistent air time day to day.... But maybe that's too much to expect.

I didn't see anything in the True TV-based programming guide (the one you get on your TV) about a morning slot for the show. But who knows...

Based on the past two days, it looks like Truevisions is going to air Total Access in the evening only (11PM tonight). This morning I took a shot and recorded March Madness to see if it would turn out to be Total Access. I was right in thinking it wouldn't be March Madness, but it wasn't Total Access either. It turned out to be the 2000 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State game which was a great game to watch.

Anyway, from here on out I will be looking for Total Access in the evenings only and know that there is no set time for it in the evening. Still, this is so much better than not having it at all. Having lived in Thailand for many years, I have never seen Total Access until now. The only thing that could be better is if it was Total Cowboys Access.

    HOW ABOUT THEM COWBOYS?!?!?!?!

Norte Dame and Michigan State had some good games. What surprises me is how does True Vision know that??? They must have a farang connection somewhere. If they show more classic games durring the off-season then I will be really impressed. Mizzou will win the Big 12 North again finally Beat Oklahoma to win the Big 12 title....well, maybe not.

I am glad to have another Cowboys fan on this thread.

While I have no doubt that with all the Thai's educated in the US that Truevisions has a number of American sports fans in its employ, in this case the connection is ASN (All Sports Network) that Truevisions has recently picked up for Thailand. Below is ASN's website.

    http://www.asn.tv/eng/about.html

As it relates to the NCAA, ASN will air the Big 10, Pac 10, Big 12 & ACC this year, so you should see some of Missouri's games. Oklahoma will be very tough again as Bradford is, in my opinion, the best QB in the country. OK, there will be a bunch of people saying Tebow etc., but Bradford is something else.

    "How about them Cowboys"?

Well I'll tell ya, that division should be called the "last man standing division" or the "cannibal division" because it's usually the team that can possibly stay healthy going into the playoffss that ends up in the NFC championship game.

They should switch the Bucs and the Cowboys anyway, Dallas seems more NFC South than East......

  6. I agree that Coyote is a nice place but not because of the food. The food is good but not Mexican as Americans know it.

BBQ Hut is alive and well. They moved to a bigger and nicer location just across the street from the Mercure Hotel. Same menu. Even my San Diego friends approve of their Mexican food.

There ya go, I was looking on the wrong side of the road.

As far as Coyote, the Mexican being not Mexican as Americans know is a crock of BS as the cook is from the San Francisco Bay area. I had a beef chimichanga there that was better than beef chimichangas in a few California Mexi restaurants. Sliced steak in it compared to what is usually low grade ground beef.

  7. As compared to where?

Why compare - Question being is it safe. If it is safer than Iraq then what does that mean :)

    Because the question is subjective.

"Is Phuket still a safe place to live?" How can there be a logical conclusion to the premise if you don't have any statistics, or comparisons to say.....Bangkok? LA? Paris?

  8. Will it still be open in April?

    Absolutely.

April is a huge holiday month here, Songkran, the Thai Lunar New Year celebration is in April. I'm sure Lanta will have it's share of water throwing.

Overall Lanta doesn't "close". All year around there are places open there, just not as many in low season.

  9. From this thread: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/-t285745.html&st=25
"hey i have heard that bitch of you is going to fleece you"(American style)

    ...

Not serious of course but Americans aren't known for their subtlety around the world

Didn't want to hijack the other thread, but I was just talking to my gf about this last night. I'm American, and I was telling her I have a hard time with my farang friends from other countries, because I never know what they think. I am a blunt American, if it comes into my head chances are I say it out loud, and I think I am constantly offending my more subtle friends from the continent. And because of their polite subtlety, they never tell me that I have offended them until they are drunk at 4am and they bring up the one time that I left the room without shaking everyone's hands, or the other time they told me dinner was at 8 and I showed up at 10 and demanded leftovers. In my mind good friends sort of bypass etiquette, etiquette is for strangers... My gf told me when I first met her she found me quite offensive as well until she got used to me. As in "I can't believe he just said that".

I guess I don't exactly have a question... This just came into my head and I had to say it.

tlock, I once was like you until:

My GF in America left me because she said the habit of just saying whatever came into my mind was juvenile. It's passible maybe at 15 years old but not at 30. Embarrassing for her and other people around who referred to me as their friend. That was 15 years ago.

I moved to Thailand and went to work for a company comprised of Europeans. Subtlety is not a strength of Americans, but you learn it. Understanding the underlying reality, although not expressed, strength of Europeans, not of Americans, but you learn it.

Not speaking but listening. We all can speak, but few are good listeners.

I'm curious as to your age.

  10. As the title says. I'm not looking for the farang rip of prices.

the title doesn't say anything about your budget, length of stay etc etc.

    this info would be useful.

    Good one!

    A first 1 year +

    Budget about 35 k a month.

I thought you were going to be teaching school in Pattani? (Keep the bullet proof vest handy).

For 35K a month you definitely will find a nice crib, pool, guest house, the works. At 25K you should find a nice house with a pool.

My advice, google rental property agents in Krabi or get there and take care of looking around yourself. I have a hard time believing the people in this sleepy forum are going to have a ton of info for you.

  11. Wow, lots of bitter folks in Ao Nang! Can't a guy put in a request for a decent burger without being pilloried as a culturally insensitive barbarian? :)

Why do you say "bitter folks"? The bottom line is there is not a good burger in Ao Nang and you're best off eating some pad gpao.

That's my point Huggy, How do you know what I am better off eating. It's great to make a suggestion but when posters are insistent they know what is best for the OP it becomes less of a forum and more of a soapbox. :D

The OP is just looking for a decent burger but he is subjected to a rant about commercialism and cultural insensitivity.

The OP didn't ask for a Burger King or a McDonalds or an Italian Pizza joint to be built in AoNang - why is he being held accountable for the alleged capitalist sins they represent? I'd wager all those businesses are Thai owned and operated, yet there is no uproar over the abuse of Thai culture by those Thais themselves.

Yes, yes, I know, if it was not for tourists there would be no reason for any of those farang chains, but at the same time if it was not for tourists AoNang would still be a fishing village.

Personally I think it's a dam_n shame the way fast food chains (and convenience stores) have blossomed all over the world like a rampant fungus, but that's not what I'm defending.

I live on an island where I eat rice and salted fish every day. On the rare occasion when I do get to Krabi or AoNang I like to go to get some greasy farang crap food and it's nobody's business to tell me that I shouldn't. Especially when didn't ask for your opinion of the political ramifications of my choices!

All in good fun - flame away! :D

Good post, well put. I said before that i only eat thai food. Well, sorry, not quite true. I do get the very occasional yearning for a burger....as do many Thais i know, and they, let alone myself, reserve the right to make their own choices in THEIR country

Halellujah a statement that is back on topic(please note the topic)..................................so where do you feed the yearning?

  12. Anyway, I see Kraft saying the Pats aren't interested in Vick. Yesterday's Total Access carried the Bellichick interview when he was asked about Vick and he did say that there is no doubt that they will be someone new joining the Pats. Since his response was based on a question about the QB position, it looked like he was confirming they were talking to Vick. Now, obviously not, but still, they will be/are talking to another QB. I guess they are nervous about Brady's future and still don't think O'Connell is ready.

Exactly. They signed QB Cleo Lemon (ex-Dolphin). He's a 4-year vet, with a few starts. More ready, in BB's opinion, than 2nd year guy O'Connell. As is the case with virtually every team in the league, losing that #1 guy would be SERIOUS trouble!

Looks like I was premature with this. Apparently, Lemon's leech (i.e. agent) wanted more money than he's worth. The Pats went out and signed (are you sitting down, Huggybear?) ex-Raiduhs QB, Andrew Walter. I like the move. I wasn't overly happy about Lemon; who's style is nothing like Brady's. Walter, OTOH, is a tall, tough, pocket passer, which IS Brady's style. And Walter does have talent. Perhaps with a decent team, he'll be a quality backup.

I should be a GM, man did I miss my calling. When I saw that they were about to sign Lemon, I thought why don't they give Walter a tryout...............For sure Walter will enjoy the change of scenery

  13. HI,

I am leaving soon for a trip back and would like to know if any of the banks ATMS work in the states.

I know the banks say they do but I would like to hear from anyone who has personal experience.

Also is the exchange rate at the airport lower then outside the airport for example at the SCB Bank?

    Thank you ..

Yes, last year I used my Siam Commercial Bank ATM card in the U.S.

At first I didn't think it worked but then realized I wasn't functioning the machine correctly. I can't remember what the difference was in the machine, but in the end it did work.

  14. krabi is nice , relax and peaceful. You may easily find house or apartment for rent here, but job is hard to find I suppose.Well I'm helping many foreigner to relocate feel free to email me the detail of house that you wanted to rent at <email address deleted as per forum rules>

    Hi wandeerat,

I noticed you posted another site on the other thread.

Watch out Wandeerat the wannabe "thai visa" police are on to you

Sure your mate would have been on to that HB but I guess he is too busy on the golf course or whatever else it is that he does.

Easy changnam, I'm no "wannabe police", but would prefer that the forums not turn into a huge advertising spam machine. I'm sick enough of the banner ads, let alone a newbie looking for some "link love" to move his site up the google rankings.

  15. Boy oh boy I hope my Raiders pick up Michael Vick.................

Safest place in the world for him, can you imagine what would happen to PETA protesters outside Oakland Coliseum? Pre-game meal, barbecued PETA.

Raider nation embraces Michael Vick, if Russell can't get it done this year he's gone, Vick starts 2010.

Latest I've seen, huggybear, says that even the Raidahs don't want him.

"Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said the team has no plans to add unrestricted free-agent QB Michael Vick (Falcons)."

Yeah, and Al Davis took five million USD from the city of Irwindale saying he might build a stadium there...................

Take the family for a night to Fantasea (Phuket Show), although I have not been I hear it's some o.k. entertainment.

Drive up to Khao Lak for a daytrip, check your maps for some waterfalls and take note of the Navy ship that is still stranded inland from the Tsunami.

Can take the family to the Gibbon Reserve out past the Heroines monument, look at all the monkeys, donate some money for their rehabilitation.

Maybe hit the Go Cart Track in Kathu, John the owner is a heck of a guy, he'll be sure you have fun.

    Daytrip to the Phuket Aquarium

That's all I can think of now....

  19. 24 votes so far. I would think another 16 votes and we'd be looking at a fairly well attended event.

    38 votes (and counting?). August 22 at 3 p.m.

    Anyone'll bring kids along?

That's 38 total, I think we'll need 30 Sports Club Specific votes to make a go of it officially.

Otherwise we'll discuss an unofficial, but at that point we may have to instill a fee to cover expenses.

    To be continued.........

  20. What happened to BBQ Hut ? Been there a long time, good food, etc. I was there last year..... :)

I can only speculate, but considering the food quality went downhill in a huge way, I think the farang moneybags gave way to the ex-missus. Run right into the ground it then.............disappeared.
